anyone give me some advise. i've looked on novamad's website at the guide and they say get an auto-electrician to fit trunking to run the wire from the door to the car.

my mk1 hasn't got central locking as standard but i have aquirred the parts i need off of a 1989 sr.

i'll wire it up to the clock i think as that is pernament live. thats also where my stereo is wired up to cause it didn't have a pernament live.

i'm sure several of you guys have done this mod.

thanks

It depends on what you want to do...

Many people drill small teeny holes on the side of the door and then on the door frame near where the light switch is operated (the pin switch) but I found (as did others) that the wores eventually snap dur to being bent in the tight recess in the door.

Also the metal on the side pillar is quite thick and is a git to drill through - even when you do manage it, you wont get a grommet to fit.

What I did (I'm gonna do an article ref this) was get 2 rubber hoses like the one on the top left of the hatch (got mine from a fiesta) and I drilled 2 2cm holes (yes thats right) - one on the side of the door just below the middle guide arm and the other on the actual side panel in the gap between the door and the front wings.

You will have to remove the wings and open the oor to get access. The area itself is relatively thin metal wise. i used one of them 2cm flat headed wood drill bits with the pointy end and just got violent with it! Works fine. you may want to use a file to remove loose bits of metal though.

On the body side the area the hole comes out of (drivers side) is just below where the boot release handle is. I then threaded the wires from the door (bearing in mind I had remote central locking so more wires, leccy windows and also set up wires for future door pod speaker installs) through the rubber hose, through the outer skin of the side panel and into the cabin area. I then joined the rwires from in there.
then you simply slot the rubber ends of the hoses into the hooels (they clip in as they have wide grommets) and seal them with grey stripe of mastic (not silicone).

This water seals them.

The benefits of using this system is that its very tidy - doesnt take too long and you can thread more wires in when needed. Also they dont get bent or broen coz theyre all bundles in one area like on modern cars!

the grey areas are the grey stripe which you cant see when the wings back on. The hole in the pic is the drainage hole from the battery tray.
Repeat same on other side

there are some 'dimples' where the holes should be.... drill through them

for the power there is, black - switched live and red - constant live in the side of the fuse box

in all fairness its SO much agro to get a door off its pish easy to take off the wing

i assume you have sideskirts or something?

you can even damage the door getting it off. i know marrus on this website put a door pin THROUGH the skin of the door :o

the fiesta ones i ofund were REALLY thin so i ended up getting some from a rover 100 - they were nice and wide

i still had probs drilling thru the door - mainly access for the drill - i ended up making a series of holes in a circular pattern and then using a chisel ot knock the remaining joins out so i had a rough holethen just poped my grommet thru

tbh any hose will do =- just look about - most cars have them - you just want to avoid the ones with the screw connectors. I got my hose off a G reg fiesta - the other side was al old boot hatch from a nova - had to twist it to make it fit
