right i have a 1.2i, and i have a powerflow exhaust system show in pics, i have the back box on atm but its super quiet. I'm guessing its a big bore system, the thing is my car has a cat and i think it needs to stay on for mot purposes, how can i get this to fit my system/cat?! I'm stuck for ideas:thumb:

Must be a very early k. Just cut and slot the system just after the cat.

i dont reli wanna hack the system about tho, and its a massive bore compared to the standard so will never fit well

dam cats were needed from aug 92

if you have a march copy of tv in the letters there is a star letter read that gives info on how to get round the cat although i wouldnt recomend it

Curtoise
12-03-10, 10:34 PM
yeh i know there needed from aug 92, but it says cars manufactured after aug 92 not registerd so mine would have been manufactured its just proving that to the mot'er

no it says if the engine spec is unrecognizable ie near the engine number it dosent need a cat till 95 so if the grinder was to slip and remove that part of the engine number it wouldnt need a cat not that i would advocate this personaly id change the center section but keep the origional so i could re fit it for the mot

MK999

doesn't need a cat, it needs to pass emissions... my 1.6i passed the cat test with flying colours without one... it's how i started to figure out it was running lean lol

Curtoise
12-03-10, 10:42 PM
thats also what i was thinking about keeping the original for mot, but still, my down pipe has a 3 bolt flange and i need a 2 bolt flange for my exhaust system so im guessing i would need a new down pipe from somewhere with the 2 bolt flange

Most Nova k-plates are late '92
Mine was December 1992

And TBH as soon as the tester sees a lambda sensor and a injected engine he will put it on a cat test

you need a manifold from an older nova 8v and then it looks like it'll bolt on.

get a gte fanimold and will be fine

Curtoise

hmm i think im just going to sell it tbh and possibly just get a backbox what systems can you get for the 1.2i? i see vaughan's one looks nice

Curtoise
12-03-10, 10:49 PM
is there anyway you can see on the old mot certificates what type of emissions it was?

any cat back system if you cant be assed with the messing about come mot time or take the system to a local exhaust place like powerflow and get them to mate the system to the cat

Curtoise
12-03-10, 10:52 PM
hmm cat back sounds good tbh

no car needs a cat. but after a certain date they have to pass the cat equipped test!!

Jack

^ exactly.

TBH a 1.2i could probably pass emissions even without a cat. Simple solution would be to fit the exhaust, complete with decat; MOT it; if it fails emissions then put the old system back on and retest it.

That rule is for import cars - if there's no UK equivalent, the BET only applies to cars from June (I think) 1995 onwards.

1.2i's cant pass the test with no cat, emissions are just too high (speaking from experience) Unless you fit an adjustable fpr and wind it right down lol

I have a Feb 1992 J-plate Nova.

K-Plates came in 1st Aug 1992.

I have a Nov 1992 K-Plate Lotus Carlton

The Nova is Cat-less, the LC has two Cats.

late 1992 if it come out the factory with a cat it has to have a cat, end of story eny cat will do, wasnt till resent you now have to use "type aproved" cats on newer cars??

curtoise, face facts..... this bit of rusty pipe is not going to make your car faster, cat or not, it simply hasn't got enough power to need a performance system, the gte/gsi used the same diameter pipe for twice the power

Curtoise
14-03-10, 11:04 AM
yeh i know what your saying mowgli, it just i have this now so may as-well use it, plus it would sound better than rushing air lol. plus im going to hang on to the 1.2i for a while for cheapness.and my exhaust hangs silly low so wanted to sort that out while i had it off.

No please dont, this is the most boring and most brought up subject there ever was on this site.

Correct no where in the MOT guide actually states that a car must be fitted with a cat. And nor does it have to pass a cat test, because its a fcuking emissions test

There are very few vehicles out there that full emissions test dont apply (see early suzuki's for details).

Fact is the cat is there to clean up the exhaust gases, no manufacture can make a car so lean that they can do away with cats all together, hence majority of new cars have pre-cats and cats.

A 92 Kplate Nova without a cat that was supposed to be fitted from factory is going to struggle on the proper test.

Yeah they all fit (ish) all nova 8v engines have the same mounting pattern, just slight differences at the end of the downpipe. and some have a Cat but you can use an older centre pipe to get rid of it!
