iv just sold a Vectra Gsi, chap who has bought it would like me to tax the car for him as agreed with the price.

Currently the car is off the road on not insured, so i need to insure it before i can tax it, phoned my insurance company, (Directline) and they gave me some rubbish about needing a traders policy to insure it for the short term to tax it.

Can you tax a car by insuring the car with say, Dayinsure.com (http://www.dayinsure.com/)?

Can you still do it online this way ?

has anyone got any ideas ? experiences ? advice ?

thanks in advance Edd.

Why can't the person buying it insure it... wait for the docs... come yours then tax it together.
That's what me and Crazy Kayll did last week.

It's not your problem if they are wanting the car it's up to them how they get it back.

Day insurance will not cover it. You will either have to find a mate with traders or tell the guy to tax it when he can and just give him the money instead.

I've taxed a car with a daily isnsurance policy before, took it to the post office though, they never said a word!

Did you just print off the policy? Im very surprised they accepted that tbh. I don't see why the buyer can't just sort it himself, surely if he is driving it away he will have insurance anyway...?

Yep just printed it off and took it down! Just said my name and car reg on.

Iirc, most insurance companies are emailing certificates now, to try and keep costs down.

It does state on the policy it can't be used to tax the vehicle, you'd be lucky to get away with it!

In terms of the law, as long as the policy covers the start date of the tax period, and you have the certificate in hand, then you're Ok.

Some temporary companies have it in their smallprint that you can't use their policies to buy car tax, and the post office may not accept a certificate thats been printed out by the policyholder themselves
