Looks like an 18e or 20seh to me mate.

The code will be either on the block face under the exh manifold near the gearbox or down the front face of the block along side the gearbox bellhousing iirc.

if its dispak, then its more likely to be an NE isn't it?,

defo looks a 2.0l 8v to me. the OHC risen up off the rocker cover... maybe 1.8,iv never seen one of those. i thought all 1.2,1.4,1.6's had flat rocker covers? correct me if im wrong...

That looks like an 18SE from the MK2 Cav's or Vaux's from that era.

as said looks like a 1.8 or 2.0 litre engine to me
with the breather on the rocker cover and the thermostat
on the near side front corner, (not behind the timing cover)

The 1.8SE is very simlar in appearance to the 20NE/SEH as the inlet manifold is the same. The 2.0 has the lines in the rocker cover with the OHC in between. The OHC stamp wasn't on the rocker filter housing like it is in the pic.

If it is the 18SE then it's still a nice engine. My dad used to have a MK2 Cav SRi with that engine and he loved it. Would go well in a Nova. About 113BHP and did 0-60 around 9.1 in the Cav.

so it would be a keeper then yeah, would be worth doing a rebuild and a carb set up on, whats the best way to identify it as i cant see any clear engine codes

If it is the 18SE and you've paid nowt for it then yeah rebuild it, a couple choice mods and it should be a great engine.

You normally find the engine number stamped where the red boxes are in the pic (you may need to clean off some dirt/grime to see it):
