What materials do people use for creating gauge/switch panels on their dash?

I have removed the glovebox and heater panel on my Mk1 dash and would like to create a panel to cover all this area and house various gauges and switches for a road rally car.

I have been looking at carbonfibre sheet but im on a budget so was wondering if ABS plastic would be any good? If yes what thickness?

Area is approx 500mm by 200mm.

ide go with abs plastic with a carbon fibre finish over it - it wont be real of course but theyve got the fake look so good these days..

I'd have thought a sheet of aluminium would be better (light and strong). Prob go for 2mm so its nice and sturdy

1.5mm seems to be a common thickness, reckon it will be thick enough??
