worn piston rings/low compression could cause high fuel consumption?

Possibly, because the engine isnt working properly and working harder to pull the car along.

i done a compression test on my corsa, it should have ben 14-16 bar. it came back as cylinder 1 12bar, cylinder 2 9 bar and cylinder 3 7bar. i have no fuel leaks and its not over fuelling, but yet its still bad on petrol. im getting 25mpg on motorway journeys! so possible down to compression then?

a failed head gasket would cause all what you have mentioned

Id go for the headgasket too the smallblocks are pretty bullit proof when it comes to the bottom ends.

How many miles has it done?
Your rubbish with fuel. Presume youve shagged off the nova?

Check headgasket which is most likely, then obviously whilst replaceing that check the vavles and there seating, and put some white spirit on the pistons to see if any liquid is going down fairly quick. if it is then its the rings, do the same with the valves resets and obviously the water should not go down a drop. and if its headgasket you may see little black marks inbetween the bores

the engine sounds knackered. get it re-ringed & the valves recut & it might be ok.

how do you know its not over fueling????

well im assuming that its not over fuelling, because i checked the spark plugs and they show that its all burning fine. usually when its over fuelling, the sparkplugs are black/carbon arent they?
