View Full Version : Simon's 1988 1.3 SR Project Thread
Well as per my other post - I drove 800 miles and 15 hours to collect this little Nova. Its an original 1.3 SR with a shy under 49k, and now its a shy over 49k. The car was owned by a 40 year old guy, who bought it as he had one originally as his first car!
Before I set out, I made sure I got a load of photos to assess its condition best I could before I went. Agreed a possible fee of £1700 depending on inspection with the seller and set out!
I've got quite a few plans, but will be keeping all of the standard bits (as it looks lovely as it is!) Its Very Very Clean for 22 years young!
Some photos after a quick clean, will be fully detailing the car at the weekend:
Firstly the outside:

http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h73/syep2001/Nova%20SR/IMG_2651.jpg
Interior - a really good condition original grey "burberry check" very similar design to the sport interior! I love that its not the usual Rainbow interior - I think this design was only run from late 87 to early 88, as the F reg had the rainbow interior.
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h73/syep2001/Nova%20SR/IMG_2652.jpg
Now for you lot some of the anal structural pictures - I missed the inner door bottoms out, but these are fine, and have some age old dribbles of underseal coming out of the bottom drain holes!! Over time I'd really like to strip the whole underside and black gravitex the lot (which the inner arches are already done in!)
Rear Chassis leg, and spring mount:

I tried in this photo to take a picture of the finish on the bay, however the small area of underseal that has come off didn't come out, needless to say the WHOLE bay is caked in clear underseal!

Looks like one of the very 1st of the later Mk1 Nova's as it has the swedge line on the drivers side inner wing (Engine bay)
That's uber clean mate, nice nice motor.

Very nice and clean good find. What are the plans?
Glad you've finally found yourself a minter mate.
And as per other thread about picking it up the plans sound good to :thumb:
I've got a full exhaust system to go on, along with a flowed head and lairy cam for starters. Think i'll track down some Bilstein suspension rather than coilovers.
Can't decide on wheels yet, might get a few sets for when I fancy a change lol.
There are some b10's on cs in classifieds

It was on it for long enough so you had plenty of time to do that!!!lol
Lovely looking car, I'm jealous! Good to see that you got one that pleased you eventually, I know you'd been looking a long time, patience pays off in the end.
Yeah, it had been on ebay twice before, but he originally wanted £2250.
Patience does pay, and although I looked a lot of different Nova's, I decided a twin 40'd original SR coming in at under £2500 all done was good value, its also £115 a year to insure, plus a bit of tax it'll be a cheap toy too - rather than an expensive XE Nova or similar that'd sit in the garage for just the same amount of time.

Top philosophy!
Coming from the rule book of a tight ass!
Unfortunately this year also sees me buying a bigger house and having a bigger mortgage! Sucks if estate agents weren't so expensive I could have a 300BHP LET in it for the money i'm spending lol.
Sounds ok to me, MINT t40'd sr, for less than 2.5k = winner i'd say
Looks like a very honest original car, nice find especially as it's an sr.
Look forward to your progress.
Been chatting with Keith.
The car has thick underseal all over the bay, i'd like to have polished paint really, but unsure if I should disturb the underseal as it looks as if its been there a long time.
Opinions?
if its lasted this long and kept mint id leave it tbh

A low strength Solvent degreaser such as panel wipe Si should do the trick. A lot of underseals/waxoils and such like are oil based so wipe off with the above even if they've been there some time. A box of rubber gloves and a 3 litre tin and away you go! Id leave the garage door open too or you may come out feeling like you just had a puff on your local dealers finest!

Very clean mate, spotless original.
In the first pic ^, are those Michelin tyres? I recognise that tred pattern. They were on my Nova when we got it. AFAIK they are original factory tyres.
In the second pic, I'd change that fabric covered coolant hose. They leak like a biatch.
maddogdaz666
12-03-10, 11:01 PM
Yeah the blue fabric coolant pipe look a bit pants but all novas come with this from the factory. Strange how its only the one pipe. Why bother? Dont the tyres Say AVON on them Nova Tek?
EDIT: Just looked back at pics on the first page, the N/S/R tyre is an origional Michelin i think!
The rear tyres are the originals as far as I can tell! Or at least the period replacements.
I think the car was stored for many years and not used.

Right chaps, a month on, i've done one thing to the car - move the SR badge to the right position.
However, it was the PNG meet at the weekend, so I stopped off for a few photos on the way home - the last time it'll be standard - day off tomorrow to spend entirely on the car!

Think it is the same as yours though yeah!

I think I said on Sunday Si, on Astra GTE's & Novas I think, steel grey was the grey option upto 1990 iirc (maybe 89) then Mistral Grey was used which has a purpley tinge to it by my eyes. Though I'm not sure Cav's had this colour, never seen a GSi or turbo in Mistral I dont think.
Glad yours has progressed. The ride height was commented on by anyone I've showed the pics to.

As far as we got, the 40's came with a linkage and twin cables, but I want to get a new Weber linkage so its connected properly to the original throttle cable rather than go down the route of the pedal block etc.
So I left it for the night, and tucked it back into the garage for a sleep...

Ride height reduction & the new wheels make a world of difference Si.
I cant help thinking they could look good in Anthracite with Red centre caps, carrying on the theme of the standard wheel trims.

Many thanks for all the nice comments, can't help thinking the engine bay needs to be better for the show's! Maybe next year's lol - would like some fresh paint in there really!

i need a linkage mate so ive got one on order form here!! mine is well poo lol every now and then the revs keep creeping up and wont come down tried tightening it and all sorts and nothing has worked!! i got lucky and got a irmsher manifould getting the lower alternator bracket the guy wanted £50 for the pair so i had his hand off with them lol

An update....
Well after the unsuccessful attempt at operating the linkage that came with the carbs last weekend. I left it...went on to ebay...£65 saw me one of these http://www.fastroadcars.co.uk/shop/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=50 !
Arrived during the week whilst I was away with work, had a chance to get it on today!
Also this week a mate of mine borrowed the garage keys and his engineer friend to machine me up an alternator bracket, pretty nice job I think?!
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h73/syep2001/Nova%20SR/IMG_3480resize.jpg
Played with the linkage etc to get it all on...and thus - the car moves under its own steam again! Many thanks to Mr Ridley and Rich for the alternator belt part number - out of interest how close to the alternators usually sit? Mines 1mm if that away from the block?
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h73/syep2001/Nova%20SR/IMG_3486reee.jpg
http://i61.photobucket.com/albums/h73/syep2001/Nova%20SR/IMG_3487reee.jpg
The carbs, badly need setting up, i've got a squeaky noise from one, and they're slow to come down from revving.
Also got a water leak from around the manifold, hoping its a bolt we've missed off tightening, and it'll be simple. If not its all gotta come off again to investigate! GRR
Til next time....
thats a shxtter, hope its an easy fix for you.

Yeah i'm hoping its simple...fecking thing! lol
Comming along very well, carbs will make it even more sweet.
Another update! Christ, 2 in 2 days!
Well after yesterday teething problems as Craig said, I thought i'd missed a bolt out the back of the inlet or something, so checked the standard one which show's 4 along the bottom, which I had. However in taking the carbs off and playing around getting the inlet on to start with I think we missed tightening 3 of the bottom 4 bolts lol - this was the culprit for the water leak and the squeaking noise!
I've got an issue with the alternator belt, its a 850mm x 9.5mm (BMW E30 part) however, at full adjustment out, the alternator is all but touching the back of the block, is this because the belt is just new or a poorly made alternator lowering bracket maybe? Advice on that would be great.
Took it round the block too, sadly it appears my n/s rear arch scrubs on the wheel - the car may yet only have 3 spokes on it as i'm not prepared to risk the arches having paint peeling off them. I'll think about possibly having them rolled....
A quick pic to prove its moved!

When did you get that checked interior? looks alright, although some how out of place in there? didn't they change to the striped stuff on E/F plate?
Glad you sorted the leaking prob, as for rolling the arches, dont bother, you'll possibly end up with bigger probables, like potential for rotting etc, i would just get low profiles on the original steel's and keep the dark trims on.
Scott
E reg SR's had a mixture of both the gray check and rainbow trim, iv even seen a E reg SR with a snowplough on that come from the factory.
Wheels really suit it Si.
Dark trims are now back on with the steelies...
Carb's idle...
I need more fuel ;) lol
Looking good, why not just grind back the arches till they clear? then paint the bare metal? Rolling should definitely be avoided.

Thers nothing 'E reg' about any car, merely the date it was registered...

Steve, that idea's worse then rolling mate, as unless you seam weld them up they WILL 100% rot.. :(
As for dark trim an steelies back on yay! :thumb:
You could always seam seal them up but from the factory its just two skins welded together, the reason they rot is because they trap water and rot from the inside out.

Steve, you dont need to tell me that mate lol seen enough nova's to know that happens eh.
Scott
Scott - yeah missed your post, its the standard early 88 interior, a cross over of the Mk1 and the Mk1.5, probably using up the part's bin before fitting the rainbow interiors! lol
Update on Wheels: I love the look of the car on the BBS's so I think i'll keep them. Looking into some 175/50/15's for the rear, hopefully this should easily clear the lips - its so very close at the moment anyway. Fronts are fine though!
looks propa nice mate, keep it simple i say :)

Simon this has slipped to page 11 FFS!
Freaking hell....an update!
Started the day in the Halfords tool sale...£150 later I came out with:

Then I seemed to be slacking on pictures big time, but wanted to fit my 4 branch manifold and Magnex stainless...
I have a before of the manifold:

And forgot to do the after, however I was going to be wrapping it, but decided against it, so gave it a good few coats of VHT paint, and lobbed it on!
Quick Magnex Vs Standard SR

I've also managed to get the alternator to sit about right by spacing the lowering alternator bracket out...hopefully will be ok now and not be sitting on the back of the block..
Have to swap back boxes with my mate as he's given me a mk2 one, and ive a slight blow to sort.
Plus need to charge the battery - lol - the 500 was at full rev's to give it enough current to turn it over!
