Its now time to put engine oil and gearbox oil into my E16SE.

Was wondering what you guys would recommend.

Engine :

Its a E16SE with miles unknown. Bottom end was fully inspected and no sign of piston ring wear etc New seals throughout the engine.

Gearbox:

Its a f15 from the girlfriends old corsa gsi. The f15 has about 80k on it. Well the clocks said that, chances are the box would'nt have been the original.

Any info would be great :)

I usually use Millers for both engine and transmission

15w50 for the engine, ep80 for the box

I'd say a thicker oil, 15w50 or 20w50. I'm running Valveline VR1 Racing 20w50 and it's fine. My engine is a c20xe with unknown miles.

Im not to fussed about the brand mate, prob just go for castrol or something. Was looking for grade e.g 10w 40. Should have made that clear in the op :(

Oh right sorry lol

I would go with EP 75W80 for the transmission and 15W50 for the engine.

Ok will go with a 15w 50 semi synthetic of some sort then. Away to have a search of gearbox oils now lol

I would say that 75 would do you for your gearbox as you won't be putting it through an amazing amount of stress, if you were planning track days or generally giving the transmission a hard time then maybe go for 80. This is all my opinion though, some folk may say otherwise.

What ever half decent oil you can get for cheaps.... ie I can get Millers 10/60 fully synth for £30/5L (normally a lot more).

Its not an everyday car mate and will be given death 99% the time lol

So 80w 90 would be the best option? or 75w 80? Theres so many to choose from lol

If you are going to be absolutely thrashing it then stick some 80 in as it is generally recommended for competition use so will do the job.

the thing is with hard ie. track use, you just change the fluids after every event, so you use cheapish oil, but swap it way more often, my old one got oil changes at 3000miles, and an annual gbox oil change

Vauxhall dealers do a deal where you buy 3 5 litre cans a get the forth free, should keep you going.

Castrol GTX High milage 15w40. I can get it for £12 for 5L. Change it more regularly if you're gonna use your rev range more often ;)

It's obviously rebranded stuff, but who knows exactly? Best just used in lawn mowers & the like IMO.

Asda Oil is more than likely to be Valvoline stuff as Walmart/Asda seem to have links to Esso/Valvoline. (iirc it is esso that makes valvoline lol)

It's probably the dregs they scrape out of the bottom of barrels before they reuse em though, rust and metal bits included lol

i love this non branded oil bashing.... all the major companies buy oil in from various sources the add their 'special' chemicals..........
we pay about £1.30 a litre for engine oil in bulk for our trucks that is far higher spec than most road car oils & its good for 20000km between changes

if you ever go to an oil terminal, you will see several companies tankers in the queue & when they put the fuel in, the driver pours additives into the top of each compartment to slosh about on the road. it really is that scientific

not non branded, just smart price, it's about 20p a litre or something, it just can't be good lol

ok, the thing about supermarkets selling car stuff in the uk is down to sunday trading laws. they also have loss leaders, as a hook to get people in.. do you really think beans cost 2p?????

the oil has to satisfy the same regulations as major branded oils because they would get sued for selling shoite & the publicity would be enormous.

Silkolene stuff i used to use, was all freebie stuff, god knows if its any good?

mowgli
09-03-10, 04:50 PM
silkolene is now called FUCHS, but it was always marketed as the stuff that they used on concordes. it was actually recycled oil, and their reputation was very good.

silkolene is silly dear over here like 70 euro a gallon. although i am using silko boa 90 with my new diff and its savage. bog all noise and not half as clunky when turning at low speeds.
