Glad you are happy with the Golf mate. I wanted one for ages before I got it, but in all honesty, I just didnt dig it or get attached to it which usually happens with me & cars. Its not a minter but is only a small amount of work from being presentable.

I did wonder if I was doing the right thing right up to leaving for slough this morning & tbh I doubt I did, but I dont care.

Something is up with the steering on the Nova though, it doesnt feel like a Nova should. Meh.

Golfs are great when they're working fine.

I've been thinking about changing cars again and might look for a standard mk3 16v (had an 8v and a VR6) as the mk3's don't seem popular at all at the moment. Craig you are a madman lol

Possibly you're used to your power steering? Nova always feels a bit alien if I have to move it across the drive etc after I've been driving the pugrot for a while.

Nah it really lacks feel, turning sharp left feels like the o/s tyre is turning in but with no grip (like the camber is fooked). And usually under power exiting a bend, the steering should snap back to the straight ahead position with no hands on the wheel, but it doesnt.

I am mad I think.

Thin tyres? Mine never snapped all the way back to straight either, but there was always lots of feel in it, it's one of the reasons I enjoy driving them so much.

185's. All my Novas have had this characteristic, lowered or std. I find it rather amusing. Even the GSi with PAS did it.

Only other thing I can think is that the fr shocks & springs are pants. It just doesnt feel right IMO. might have to try the fr coilovers on it.

bmw156
08-03-10, 04:12 PM
the steering wheel never snapped back proper, but always started coming back if that makes sense,

and yeh the whole suspension set up is nothing special, just an improvement on the standard stuff lol.

Well I have sorted it.

I guessed the top mounts were incorrectly installed, struts & springs off. Indeed they were. Line up the hole in the spring plate properly (180 degs opposing the lower mounting holes), throw back together replacing 2 rounded off 19mm nuts & she feels beaut now.

Good man. No worries. A schoolboy error that I made once & never again.

2 of the nuts on the bolts that secure the lowewr strut to steering knuckle (big 19mm ers).

Glad the Golf is being fussed over!

bmw156
10-03-10, 02:58 PM
lol, i dont get what bits were incorrect lol. and i must have driven for a year with it like that!

and i do apolgise about the two bottom bolts.

yeh i love the golf :D

putting the fogs back in! as they have been robbed lol. sorting out the door, replacing that pipe with gen VW :D. speaker cover i have. and a parcel shelf on the way. new bulb for the dash light. and some clear indicators as they are meant to be lol. exhaust next :)

craig green
10-03-10, 03:04 PM
Ahh all good.

The topmount;
Theres the upper spring plate with the TM bearing in & the upper plate which mounts to the shock piston threads & the 2 studs you bolt to the turret. The spring plate has a hole in one side which identifies its poition as the plate is canted to dial in the right amount of camber (or whatever). The hole needs to be 180 degs around from the lower mount points on the damper.

It's in the Haynes.

bmw156
10-03-10, 03:09 PM
i didnt know that. glad you spotted it. does it feel alot better now lol.

did you nick the fogs lol?

and do you know how much filler is in the rear quarter?

v5 being sent of today :)
