I recently say 2 new Gatso's put up on a stretch of road as I was driving to my cousins house. Thing is, these Gatso's looked very normal but just infront of them was a smaller camera/radar/something at the same hieght as the GATSO pointing 2 o'clock (when looking ahead)
All the usual markings on the road and the GATSO itself looked like every other one. Just wondering if anyone has seen anything like it or knows what it is. I've had a search on the interwebz but can't find an image of it

was the little camera blue?

Umm, no it wasn't. Was painted the same as the GATSO, a nice dark green. It was about 30% the size of a GATSO on a pole at the same height. It's like a large oblong camera but faces more to the right. There was one for the northbound road and one for the southbound road too.

first time ive heard about these couldnt find any thing an google

Doubt it's for faces as from the way the thing is positioned means it will only get the side of the face. ANPR is probably the closest explanation atm.

lol pmsllol
tax disk scanner thing maybe
they have been putting extra flash units with the gatsos of late to try to reduce the point source of light when they go off

Cool, looks like we're starting to get somewhere. A firend of mine said there's the same system being put up where he is (abroad). I asked him if he knows what they are and he's not too sure either.
Apparently it's due to the Gatso being converted to digital, something to do with light, saturation and sensitivity being greater with 'wet film' than digital hence the new fangled jobbies need another flash to take decent pictures.
Stupid idea if you ask me... spend loads on converting to digital then loads more having another horrible pole put up doh!

They're digital now??!!
Fantastic, dont blow them up with fire, blow them up with magnets!!!!
Nah, solid state memory doesn't have a problem with magnets....now if you were to fire lots of infra red at the lens it'll only be able to see lots of white ;)

Good to know, is it permanent blinding or just temporary??
Has to be SOME way of disabling them without damaging them on the outside.

Just temporary - try firing the tv remote at your digi cam and you'll see what I mean.

It'll be the cruise scene seller of 2010, surprised there isn't anything on the bay already lol Still, more likely to work that fitting a CD to your grill though :thumb:

oh ye of little faith/knowledge etc.....
the wires are laid out on the tarmac, and are very shallow. when they head out to the verge, the installers will have bodged them in at less than a foot down. pick shovel & some baxtering will soon sort them out.
or sandpaper on the lens.......

some people went round stealing the lenses round here not long ago they are worth a mint to photographers i got told that and a pick axe to the lense they are the expensive it takes maybe 3 weeks round here for the cops to fix them
