RJM25R
28-02-10, 03:12 PM
Dead simple, a list of ten REALISTICALLY AFFORDABLE cars I want to own before I'm 40 (or die!)

No Ferrari's or silly gear (Although a Porsche 944 Turbo, or old 911 are possible)

I've had an evolving list, but this is my definitive lot.......

1. Sierra Sapphire Cosworth
2. Kit car (Caterham style)
3. Lotus Elan (90's model)
4. Evo 4/5/6
5. BMW M3 (E36) Coupe or convertible
6. Lotus Elise or Vx220
7. Subaru Impreza
8. XR3I convertible
9. Nova GTE/GSI/XE
10. Calibra

I've done 1,7,8,9 and 10 already.

Whats your list?

TBH Limp you'd struggle to find a decent Roadrunner for <£20k, unless you get a poverty spec one with something like a 318.

Realistically... starting with the two I've done so far.

1) V6 Nova saloon - always fancied a V6 when I first got the shell off Rexy.
2) Celica ST205 - remember seeing them when they first came out in 1994 and thinking "I'd like one of those one day". Totally forgot about them til I was looking to replace the nova saloon I sold 5 years ago!
3) Dolomite Sprint OR 1850HL - preferably in Brunswick Green. My dad had one and I loved it.
4) Skyline R33 GTR - don't care how fat and heavy they are, I still like them.
5) S197 Mustang GT - I'm not a great fan of Mustangs but it would be nice to have a bit of modern muscle. Can see them being cheap in a few years once the Camaro takes off.
6) 1969 Camaro SS - classic American pony car. I'd settle for a replica as legit SS/RS cars fetch big dollar.
7) Triumph TR6 - classic British sports coupe. Bit pricey though for a good one, as I'd be after a RHD version.
8) Triumph Stag V8 - can be picked up quite cheap, those left around these days mostly all have the original faults fixed up.
9) Toyota Glanza-V Turbo - if I got rid of the Nova and needed a second car, this would be at the top of my list
10) Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4 - again, another second in line car to the Celica.

Problem is I doubt I'd actually get round to owning half of them as I tend to buy a car I like and stick with it for ages. I don't tend to swap my cars every few years just to get something else.

The Celica has a backup list, if I sold it tomorrow it would be GTO, RX-7, GTR, Supra or Galant. Wouldn't consider anything other than Japanese for my "primary" car tbh.

Thing is though Jaques, no-one says they have to be roadworthy.

Don't p!ss on my Mopar fire lol. Same deal with the KGC10. Would be struggling to find a worthy one for £20k to my door.

Jack
28-02-10, 04:42 PM
If you have £40k to spare, there was always a rather tasty orange GTX on ebay. There was a yellow track prepared one on there too for a lot less $$$ but the owner put up a vid of him seriously abusing it in a car park. FAIL lol

2. Opel Manta A - rather fancy squeezing in an RB25/26 or something similar, not sure if that counts as realistic though, especially as they're getting older and therefore rarer every year! Definitely turbo'd if I had one for the muscle looks/sneeze dual personality :d
3. R34 skyline, must be getting cheap before i'm 40 :p
4. S2000, hard topped to avoid the hairdresser look

Some interesting metal on those lists and some absolute bollocks talked as well! Come on FFS, it's not "Cars I dream about having" but cars you CAN afford to buy and run, and WILL buy!!!!

I missed the RS2000 mk2, I spotted that on a couple of lists and I've always fancied one of those but they're really shooting up in value.

Nice wheel choice. :) lol

Was a mates dads Tarmac rally car that got laid up in a barn from about 98 until when that pick was taken in about 2006, my mate (his son) bought it off of his old man & resurrected it. 300bhp of Tarmac 4x4 spec. Insanly quick car TBH.

EDIT: Thats the car i measured to figure out Escos running gear is the best option for minimal mods onto a Nova.

I know and normal gti's are supposed to be on par with them(which i dont like the look of) and they look a bit lardy to be "quick" down some country lanes but i like the noise and with the optional extra recaros in have a really nice interior....plus iirc you can get an haldex controller so that the powers split more like 30% front 70% rear:cool:

P.S (Fuel cannot be much worse than my old novalol )

For years now i have had a list of cars that i want to own in my lifetime. I will always have cars in my life and i cant wait till i have my own place with an amazing garage. I have never dreamt of owning zondas or supercars like that but have always dreamt of cars that i will own. Seen as i dont like new cars my list will pretty much stay the same.

1) E36 BMW. Years ago i photoshopped a black m3 convertable and told people i will have one within a few years. At the monet i have the black coupe which i love to bits and a near identical convertable. I dont feel the need of owing an M3 to be honest, the coupe will stay with me for a long time

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i184/L33LEG/the%20BMW%20project/bmw083.jpg

2) E30 Convertable. 18months ago i finally bought one, was easily the coolest car i have owned. Even though it had problems i was constantly grinning driving it. I kind of regret selling it but i can always buy another one.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i184/L33LEG/the%20bm%20cabby%20project/cab039.jpg

3) Merc SL500. Again, i have wanted one of these for years and i can see me owning one sometime this year. Basically a black one with black leather slammed on the standard alloys, perfect imo!

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i184/L33LEG/random/qlR5ywm0KGrHgoOKicEjlLmZ3G2BKYHhMiM.jpg

4) CRX Vtec. Ever since seeing one whilst at college i have been in love with these cars. Apart from a nova they are the best hatch around. Since i was 19 i have nearly bought one so many times. Hopefully when i do finally make the purchase i won't be disappointed. I actually think they are in my top 3 cars of all time

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i184/L33LEG/random/05.jpg

5) Escort Cosworth. I hate fords but these are truely amazing cars. I have never thought about owning just one car but if the time ever comes up i will settle with selling up and buying one. Unsure on colour but must be a clean example bought from an enthusiast.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i184/L33LEG/random/fordescortcosworth.jpg

6) Holden Ute. In a couple of years time when i might want something a bit newer i have a very short list of cars that i would consider. An ute will just about beat an F150 or something odd like that Lol.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i184/L33LEG/random/ute3.jpg

7) Somesort of highly kitted up jap car. Not quite sure what yet but within the next few years i want to be either a S2000, skyline or similar and go crazy with it and make it a project lasting years.

8) Ferrari 348 Spider. In my mid 30s now and instead of buying a new bmw or something similar i will be wanting a black 348. Always fancied these over the other ferraris, think its because of the rear lights and the fact if i spent a bit extra for a 355 people may think its an mr2 Lol.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i184/L33LEG/random/f348-spyderr.jpg

9) Dodge Viper. The dream gets a little silly now but who knows what prices will be by then and how much il be earning. Would absolulty love a viper parked in my garage though.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i184/L33LEG/random/ext76.jpg

10) Porsche 993 Turbo. Will more than likely just stay a dream but when and if i ever own one of these my life will be complete, my best car of all time and always will be.

http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i184/L33LEG/random/2mguvqw.jpg

I guess il always have a black car aswell lol I have also purposely missed out my nova, even though it will hopefully be with me most of my life it was never a dream, more like a child i can never get rid of ha!

funny you say that. ever since watching bad boys i have wanted that car. i was certain it wasnt a 993 but after years of looking at 993s i believed that was the one i want. when i picked that pic out of all my others i kind of knew it wasnt one but just love the look of it lol

So basically, i either want a 993 turbo or that 964. (on bad boys he said it was such a rare car though, i take it this maybe true and worth a hell of a lot more than a 993?)

EDIT - just had a quick look at the 964 and they didnt seem to be made in 1994 so that's no good for me (my reg) and looking at them they arnt a patch on the 993. So yes, the one is bad boys is a very cool car but not the dream car.

So, il have this instead :)

Im usually ok with them, been learning for a good few years lol the 993 has always been the nicest shape. i have a habit of saving car pics that i see on forums to my desktop. i have a load of 993 ones and the pic i posted is in there aswell but from the front they all look the fcuking same lol

You sir are SOOOOO WRONG!

I've played in far too many GTi's and R32's to let you say that!
(The joys of working for VW)

Straight line speed, We know the R32 wipes the floor with the GTi so no point even conversing about that.

The 4wd system with the epic haldex rear diff makes the R32 so so much more fun in the twisties, the mid range grunt from the V6 makes them a much more driver orientated option over the GTi... Admitedly the GTi is a phenomenal car but who wants to keep an engine revving so hard?

Chuck a GTi into a corner in third carrying too much speed and your dead! Keep the speed down but keeping it in third and the turbo lag is shocking so it's not even worth bothering, The low compression 1.8/2.0 engine off boost couldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding let alone put a smile on your face!

You have to enter a corner in second and can only enjoy third when your well out of the bend otherwise the front end plays silly buggers if you shift mid corner even with the DSG box, The engine will only rev so hard and if your driving it like you stole it your out of puff and red lining in 2nd before you've exited the corner..

Compare that to the R32...

You can enter the corner in fourth carrying shed loads more speed than the GTi, Use the weight of the engine to keep the nose planted click the paddle and shift to third on the entrance to the corner revs shoot up but not stupidly high kicking the computers into "make it stick mode" so no silly twitching 4wd system takes care of the grip needed mid corner, plant it and the torque and delivery of the power makes it take off mid way round and fly round the corner not hitting the limiter in third till you're well out of the corner and have the biggest daftest grin on your face...

Anybody that rates the MK4/5 GTi over the R32 either hasn't driven one at all, Or hasn't driven one in true hot hatch style (like you stole it) or needs a crash course in how to drive a car on the limit to show what it really can do!

I'm all for opinions but how can you rate a 2.0 with a hairdryer over a 4wd 3.2 V6 with a gear ratio that is pure perfection for any type of driving and handling to die for??

I agree 100%, But i think the line should read

tbh both the GTi and R32 are dire as they are "modern" VAG cars...

Remember if there was no MK1 GTi there would be no nova SR's or GSi's or etc etc..

If the VW hadn't released the Mk1 GTi what would we have instead of the hot hatch??

Near enough everybody's list includes a "hot hatch" of some description...

You sir are SOOOOO WRONG!

I've played in far too many GTi's and R32's to let you say that!
(The joys of working for VW)

Me too, 5 years a VW sales guy, including having R32's and GTI's as company cars, NOT playing with them but driving them for many many miles (over a thousand a month)

Straight line speed, We know the R32 wipes the floor with the GTi so no point even conversing about that.

Wipes the floor? GTI 0-60 7.2, edition 30 6.8, R32 6.5. Less than a car length over an 8th of a mile.

The 4wd system with the epic haldex rear diff makes the R32 so so much more fun in the twisties, the mid range grunt from the V6 makes them a much more driver orientated option over the GTi... Admitedly the GTi is a phenomenal car but who wants to keep an engine revving so hard?

Lighter front end on the GTI makes it better in the twisties than the R32, also GTI outsells R32 by 4 to one so most people want to keep that turbo 4 spinning!

1.8/20? No my friend, the mighty 2.0 TSI.

R32 is old fashioned, heavy, languid, £400 a year road tax, over-thirsty (My demo rarely went over 17mpg) thiefs dream, chavs bracelet look, impractical (Battery in the boot anyone? Small boot due to 4wd system that isn't real 4wd). Sounds nice though!

Golf GTI is just as quick in the real world, £175 road tax, genuine 26mpg round town and 38 on motorway, more practical. . .

And here's the final nail. VW don't make th R32 anymore, but we still make the GTI. Go figure!
