Right,

I have a SLOWish internet connection...things like watching movies is impossible - any streaming is laughable and downloads are chronic...

Even things like watching Youtube clips is painful.

I use Firefox (latest version) and I've noticed recently that if I watch a youtube (or similar) vid then close the tab before the movie or clip finishes, my connection speed drops dramatically!

I have a D-Link 4 way highspeed DSL modem and whenever its downloading something the line in use flashes like mad.

Example - the Denise Richards clip - fun bags - had to check it out - clicked on the link, new tab opens up and the vid starts playing - think to myself - shes a dog cant be anussed watching, so close the tab. however the modem still seems to be streaming the vid to my PC, slowing the remaining page (PNG) right down.

I had to wait until it had finished uploading before I could pretty much do anything else!

So - how to I kill any mid stream streams if I close a tab?

I've tried logging out of firefox but that doesnt work and short of removing the power from the modem (which usually crashes my internet connection causing it to go local only) I'm stuck

HELP!

:(

the video thing happens with me, i always pause the movie ( usually pron) and then close the tab. it closes alot quicker.

my pc is quick, but recently i have noticed firefox takes a few seconds longer to open. im not happy lol. just afterthey done that recent update actually. not good.

Firefox is an EPIC memory hog, although the latest version - 3.6 (bear in mind you have to force FF to download the latest version as for some reason the update jobber will only pull down 3.5.8) - isn't toooo bad.

Open task manager and make sure FF is gone completely when you close it. I've known it to hang around in memory for ages.

Also clear out your history and favourites, as both can slow it down majorly.

I use Google Chrome, I prefer it to Firefox and Internet Explorer. Downloaded the latest Firefox last night but not a fan so probably going to get rid.

Firefox is cack. As stated, hogs memory like hell. I'm using google chrome, and it's way better. Uses alot less memory, and personally I think it's a better browser. :)

FF has gotten better (right now its only using 235Mb RAM with 5 tabs open, 3 of which are heavy pages). Problem is I started using it when it was faster than a well oiled eel in a paddling pool full of KY jelly, and got hooked on some of its plugins :(

I seriously can't use IE8, the UI is just so totally wrong IMO. Haven't tried Chrome yet, and I did wibble with Opera a while back but couldn't get on with it.

Its possible my issues are being caused by FF as well, I may have to try out chrome or opera. I used to use Avant, but it was IE based so ended up having to avoid it at all costs lol
