Just been putting a striplight in me garage. Has anyone had any experience doing this? Rather than there being one wire, there were three all going to the old light, and these split into three live, three neutral and one earthing lead. The inputs on the ligth were labelled things like flux and loop (!).

Anyway on the new one, i basically twisted the three red bits together and then connected it to the brown wire (live), did the same for the black wires and connected it to the blue wire (neutral) and connected the earth in the middle where required.

It worked, although when you tried to turn it off at the wall it stayed on! Tried the bulb both ways around but nothing changed, so then i tried checking to make sure the wires weren't touching inside and seperating them further apart - rapping the three in the same colour tighter together in the process. This made no difference when the switch was on, but as soon as i turned it off it blew all the lights in the house! I've disconnected it now and given up the for night.

These are the connectors on the striplight!

What the fuck is going on? Is this type of wiring common?

Thanks lads,
Joe

the light lks like its part of a ring main (a costend loop around the garage or house) so there is no problem ok :P

Hmmm Cambridge suggested:

Using the switched live and neutral in the connectors, and the earth. Then twist the other lives and neutrals together and black tape them... sound ok? J

wot ever you try I recommend this.

1. Have someone with you just incase
2. wear rubber gloves and big rubber wellies to insulate yerself
3. have some spare fuse wire

4. Get somebody who knows what they're doing.

fuck me thats a mess

if u turn that on u wont have a pretty sight

basically there are 3 mains leads there

LOOP IN
LOOP OUT
SWITCH

loop in and out are connected together

switch is connected across loop live and the light live

light is connected accross switch return and neutral

what u need to do - is put the original wiring back inplace the way it was

and instead of connecting the normal blub holder to the rose - connect the strip light to it

basically the wire that went to the rose goes to the strip instead

Random person "can you help me none of my lights work"
Me "have you put a new fitting Up"
R,P, "Yes"
Me "Did you put all the blacks together and all the reds together?"
R,P, "yes"
Me "and the lights went off when you turned the switch on?"
R,P, "Yes"
Me "LOL,I'll sort it, It'll only take 2 min's"

You'd be surprised how common this is, Easiest way to fix it is basically how aragorn said.

Find which cable goes to the switch, The black one from the switch goes In LIVE.

All the REDS need to go together in a seperate connector, and the remaining 2 BLACKS need to go in NEUTRAL.

and all the earths need to go in EARTH

Hope That helps
