i've just bought a standard 1.6 engine exactly the same as mine in my gsi so i can do everything to it out of the car and then swap in a weekend when its all ready - in theory!
so i need your help in what to do, what bits to get and where to get them from- i'll be doing all the work myself except for the specialised bits(head work etc)
heres my list so far- any differing opinions please speak up! -
cam - whats best all round?
head- where to get it done?
fly wheel(L/B),
uprated clutch,
pistons - worth it ?
sparks, leads,
boost valve,
4 branch manifold- already got exhaust.
samco hoses,
and now the big one.... should i stick with the injection or what?
what other options do i have considering i dont want to spend shit loads on throttle bodies etc etc.
i know the injection system is the weak spot but there must be a way to keep it and get big power increases?
i really need your advice as i want to spend money but dont want to buy stuff i end up not using!
cheers!

is it an MPI or SPI? if its single point injection its gotter go!

spi will also have different shape ports to multipoint, so in an ideal world you *should* swap the head.

hes just stated its a GSI engine u planks :P

cam - not sure
flywheel - dunno if its worth it
clutch - any uprated one would do i'd expect tho they prolly have different feels
head - what u wanting done? blydenstein?
pistons - a bottom end rebuild MIGHT be on the cards if u wanna spend that much cash - im sure u could rebore slightly and fit bigger pistons
sparks and leads im sure either a decent set of champion plugs and branded leads (not ones that claim HP increases)
boost valve will prolly liven it up a bitty
manifold will alter torque and power distribution
hoses are cosmetic
i'd stick with injection - but u can get more power from carbs

40's with head work and cam could see 160bhp
MPI with headwork and cam is prolly around 140bhp

im sure there is prolly ways to get more power outta it - polishing the inlet manifold, fitting a bigger throttle body or usmmat like that - just aint sure - ive heard somewhere that the standard (albeit modified) injection can make 170bhp in N/A application but im not really sure how

forgive my ignorance but what is a boost valve and what does it do?

i'm guessing its different to a dump valve on a turbo.

Im scared of injection engines cos i dont know how they work or anything! I like BIG carbs!

a boost valve is a replacement pressure regulator for the fuel rail that works by adjusting faster to the changes in pressure and prlly by increasing the pressure a tad too

when u floor it all the injectors start firing rapidly - this causes the pressure in the fuel rail to drop because the regulator is still returning loads of fuel to the tank, the faster the regulator responds to the pressure drop the more responsive the car will feel as it will be firing in the right amount of fuel sooner

and u can fit boost valves to turbo engines too - its nowt to do with the turbo boost at all - although saying that the regulators on the turbo engines somtimes have a connection to the turbo so it can increase the fuel pressure as the boost increases

not sure where to take head to get done.. anyone recommend anywhere?
is it a good idea to get ex / inlet manifolds matched to the ports on head?
i need a cam that is good for town and for tq/high speed, i know courtenay do one anyone know if its any good?
what about valve springs / and lifters? whats the diff between hydrolic (however you spell that!) and solid?
gaskets? what to get and how much?
should i be looking to keep the same comp ratio ?
all these questions and no answers!!! someone must know.

try cylinder head developments, they r VERY good, they advertise in total vaux, they did my head, was well impressed with them

yes it is worth doing. anything that has an effect on the airflow should be looked at to get the most power out of the engine.

i've read the info about this cam and it seems pretty good, if i was getting a cam i would be very tempted by a courtenay one but i havent heard and stories about them, good or bad.

i would raise the compression, probably best talking to the engineer that does your headwork what he thinks. he will probably be able to skim a couple of thou off the head when he does the ports.

cheers scott, prob ring courtenay tomrw and see what they say.
wanted to speak to harry hockley motor sport aswell, anyone got a number for them?

ok, dan
- how do you go about getting a re-bore? i take it it has to be done but by how much? then do you get pistons specially made to match?
- your water and oill pumps... uprated jobbies or new standard ones?
- what gaskets you using?

what power output has your engine got now?
