people have been known to fit washers in the housing on competition engines to help the flow & keep it cool..

on the road i can't see the point

Take it out and try it in some boiling water!!!

The engine will run mega cold with no thermostat fitted, and the stat helps pressurise the system as its a resistance to the water flow
