dont fit properly on here at the mo, got some spidgot rings on there way as they dont fit nice on the hub and because there a 28ml offset they rub on the rear archs a little, so will be tuning up the archs on saturday!! it was either a 28ml or 37ml offset that i could get. the 37's would be better but would rub my front coil overs without putting spacers on which i dont want, so 28's it is. there only 3ml away from the coil overs!!

just wondering.. if you'd fitted 185-45-15 or 175-50-15 wouldn't that have cleared the rear arches?

yeah it would but then i would have had mega stretch on the tyres, im not to keen on that!

i'm dutch, and for some reason i always disagree with UK wheel&tyre choices lol
175-50 isnt that stretched?

What engine is in the Kadett above? An XE putting power down through 175's in Anova would be awfull.

We have nice roads over here with demanding bends & corners, we need grip. Any compromise in that is making the car slower IMO. It kinda makes a mockery of the coilovers & other performance enhancing mods if tyre choice is based on a trend.

a 1200 ohv engine, 60hp (30 years ago lol)

i agree on the XE part, i drove my 20xe nova with SR steelies with 165-70 or something, and it was horrible.

Mayhem thinks every car has to have wide wheels and stretched rubber lol.

CG nailed it. We like to have fun. Fast cornering on roads more demanding than a straight stretch of road at speeds higher than 50 kph. lol

mayhem
19-02-10, 10:56 AM
lol that's not thrue. but for arch issues a smaller tyre is a good option.

my XE nova has 195-45-14 on 7.5j, 175 on a 7.5 looks great, but it would wheelspin thill 4th gear.

L14MNP
19-02-10, 11:05 AM
lol Yeah smaller/stretched tyres help in those instances.

The Volvo runs 175/50/13's on a 7J rim and they're stretched enough for me. It has cabbaged the handling, but then so did welding the diff. lol

It's all about compromises, I just get the feeling when I see cars on wide wheels with stretched rubber that they never see any kind of real speed.
Although stretch does help with drifting, hence the Japs doing it for as long as I can remember. Any car that is all about speed and traction will never run them though IMO.

floydy13
19-02-10, 07:13 PM
mayhem, what make 175/50's have you got? i did briefly look on 175/55 15 which are on the back of smart cars, but thought that 195's shouldnt be to bad, i dont want to raise the back, so im gonna look a stiffer rear shocks, any ideas you guys? i got gmax on at the mo, been on there for a long time. also is gas better than oil for stiffness?

mayhem

continental iirc. i dont know the type, i bought them from a mate with these tyres already fitted.

that's a not a bad price floyd, cheapest new set i know of is 425 euro ex tyres here in holland, but new ones in the UK are much more expensive for some reasen.

@vauxluva: it's 7j et37 with 175-50-15 tyres.

nova_niek
23-02-10, 04:22 AM
Being Dutch (much like Mayhem on here) got me thinking why you UK lot have a different opinion on wheel and tyre choices compared to most mainland Europeans... then L14MNP's comment explained it all! :d

CG nailed it. We like to have fun. Fast cornering on roads more demanding than a straight stretch of road at speeds higher than 50 kph. lol
You Britons have corners and nice, scenic roads. No wonder I love to spend my holidays in Blighty. :thumb::thumb::thumb:

We, on the other hand, have Gatso-laden roads and trajectory controlled (right word?) motorways. We have speed bumps, radar/laser-armed coppers and other speed-killing nuisances everywhere else. And not a corner in sight (well not where I live anyway). There's absolutely no fun in that.

Hence, the need for decent rubber can hardly be justified. So instead lairy wheels and tyres are being bought.

But I could be totally wrong and talk out of my lower backside. :p

Good night everyone!

Niek

7j et37 with 175-50-15 tyres.

Mayhem, what make and model tyres are they? I've been looking about for low aspect ratio 15's but I believe it's only recently the more interesting sizes have become available.

Cheers,

Strangely enough, Scooby's come with Kumho as OEM. Also, a mate has some Kumho's fitted to his Porker 911 and he rates them highly. Makes you wonder.

floydy13
25-02-10, 07:18 PM
scoobys might, but the kumhos they come with are more of a performance tyre, than what you can get in a 175/50/15!! those porsche's have to have specified N fitment tyres and im sure kumho dont do them. he might want to look into that,
