Can't see any info in Haynes for gearbox overhaul/dismantling, but are there any guides for replacing a differential in an F20 gearbox?

Edit: Should be in technical section.

gettin it out is pretty simple. remove both the drive shaft seal holders which twist out. usually need a lever bar to get them going. then the diff just drops out.

get a mk2 cav or astra book.

basically they are just a beefier version of the f10, so pretty much everything is the same..

the only tricky bit is getting the bearing housing in correctly to torque up the diff bearings right. you'll probably need a special tool making.. when i strip them, i mark them with white paint & re tighten them to the same mark when i rebuild. but if you are sticking in a new diff or an lsd, then i can hunt something out for you from one of my books

I have an Astra book with all the 20XE info I need, but just nothing on gearboxes. Got a Quaife diff to go in to replace the standard one.

Never dismantled a gearbox so excuse the nooby questions, but I assume the bearings are easily removed while the diff is out? Worth buying a rebuild kit to replace them at the same time?

do you have a puller set?

the f16 info is the same as for the f20

my mk2 cav (burgundy colour) book is full of the rebuild info.

what diff you putting in? if your putting in a second hand diff with second hand bearings make sure you get the castle nut and the other side to match the diff, as theyll have worn the bearings to suit them. or fit new bearings.

It's a new Quaife ATB.

get new diff bearings.

to refit do the castle nut up till the diff wont turn, then back off till it rotates with relative ease. Voila, one correctly torqued diff

And what happens if it's torqued incorrectly?

Rebuild kits, something like this do the job? http://www.transmission-rebuild-kits.co.uk/vauxhall-f16f18f20-gearbox-rebuild-repair-p-133.html?cPath=90_132

fast wearing/iffy noises/poorly performing diff etc.

iainel, the trouble is that you need a lot of pullers, knuckle bars, etc to get all the bearings swapped, but if you are prepared for a bit of work, gearboxes are quite easy..
