Dont know why, but I can smell exhaust fumes inside the car and outside it when its running, not too strong, but definatly not normal. The exhaust looks solid enough, and it has a new manifold gasket.

Anyone had this themselves, its a 1991 GSI.

sure you havn't touched the exhaust and picked your nose?

get two of ya, start up the engine get someone with a glove on and a cloth and cover up the backbox, the engine will try to stall and when it does take the cloth away and repeat and keep on doing it. Then you or your not go along the car and feel with your bare hand or listen for any sign of exhaust leakage :)

I did put my hand over the exhaust and it didnt try to stall, must mean a big leak. Does sound like its blowing a bit. I'll do as you suggest and get a m8 to help, or get carbon monoxide poisioning.

probs under the bonnet then it comes in via the air vents

Could be under the bonnet, but not from the manifold, new gasket. Maybe easier to go to exhaust place, I dunno, dont really want to spend any money on the thing..........

Carbon monoxide poisening is obviously the cheapest option available to you......

what about the gasket between, the manifold and middle link pipe. Mine used to go there more than anywhere else.

check engine breather pipe to air box also, when mine come off a 'exhaust fume' sort of smell was coming through the vents.

Depending on what exhaust is on it make sure tailpipe clears the bumper. Seen and smelt it before, fumes coming up the inside of the back panel and into the car through grommets etc. because the tailpipe was sitting too far back!
Just another idea to throw into the pot :)

Standard exhaust, sitting pretty much where it should do, seems a bit too smokey tbh. Checked my Corsa c against it and couldnt even see any smoke coming from that, fubar piston rings maybe?
