View Full Version : Single V pulley 20XE????
Right just been flicking through ebay and noticed this (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/vauxhall-nova-c20xe-redtop-conversion-mounts-etc_W0QQitemZ160403187603QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Car sParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM?hash=item2558c66793).
Is it true you can put a single V pulley to clear the chassis leg on a nova?
Ive never heard of this before
that's what you have to do... the alternater mod in the chassis leg is different, and done in conjunction.
The xe in a nova will ONLY run a single v pulley. This is always from an twin v pulley, machined down to single pulley. It won't run a multi-v pulley.

Or buy an undersized single V. Dont some come with a single V pulley as standard?
My old xe. sorry for poor pic.

Thats what i had.
arh ok i see so got to single v the xe and do the chassis leg mod.
Just having a hunt around the internet for fitting it without cutting the chassis out.
Would the SBD mini alternator do the job?
cheers for the help people, be sure to neg rep me for such a dumbass question lol
Mine came from a cav gsi iirc, with power steering. had the p/s v machined off.

Why don't you want to cut the chassis?

Hammer FTW if you ask me!!
just want to keep the car so i can return it to its former glory without a cut out

Just to add though ive managed to run a twin v pulley on my xe without it catching unless its the tolerance of the chassis from the factory.

/\ its the alternator end im on about mate

Move the alt? it's not totally unheard of, not common practice either tbh but if you can find somewhere it fits then make a bracket up/find a belt that fits.
true i will wait til i get the engine get it on the stand and have a play

As pete said on previous page mate just hammer it in near the driver turret it doesnt have to go in that much ive hammered it an got bags off room and it hardly looks like ive touched it.
i know where it goes and differant methods but i dont want to ruin a mint chassis leg lol
oh well i might then if i ever go back to standard i can weld a plate over and fill :)

Or mount the alt where the PS pump would have mounted? Front of the block at the bottom.

Front mounted alt, this is the most popular alternative! im sure there are a couple of projects that have done this mod aswell if you need some guidance;)

But the only problem with doung this is wouldnt it be open to the weather much more and be close to the floor?

i had my pulley machined at an engineers cost £10 so it was neat
then realise dthe donut in the middle was a bit rough so i bought one from courtenay which was the same price as a neew OE pulley from the dealer and then the £10 to modify it

it works ok on vag cars. golf mk2, seat ibiza etc all have a low front mounted alternator.

I used -A Nissan sunny alternator A575
2x male M8 Tie rods
1x 4 groove alternator belt 843mm long.
SBD's 110mm 4v alloy bottom pulley.
Late type xe alternator bracket(from the engine with the multi V alternator).
Alot cheaper than the sbd set up aswell

So is that Nissan alt lower to clear the chassis leg or just changed for modifications sake?
Fr mount alt sounds best IMo.

The Nissan setup "looks" like it sits lower, but would like to see a pic of the engine in.

I used the nissan set up for a couple of reasons. Mainly because the standard xe alternator wont clear the bottom of the sbd inlet manifold.secondly because i wanted to get rid of the single V belt.My chasis leg was already cut out because my car had a standard 20xe in it before. It does sit lower due to using the later type alt bracket.I do think it would fit without modifying the chasis leg due to the clearance I now have. Its worth mentioning that using a 4v belt is alot narrower than the 6v belt used on late xe's.This also increases clearance. No engine in situ pics to hand but will get one when i get chance.
