Just wondering if its a massive job to remove a 1600 SPI engine from a cavalier? Its a weird one as its a 1600 and half way down the engine its got the sticker stating the enigine code which is a 1.6 however its got the 2L rocker cover which is bigger than the 1.6 so i can only guess its got a 2L head is that possible? Basically i am going to rebuild the engine and do a full re spray on the car just wondering if its a majoy job to remove the engine and whats the best way to do it? or anyone around Newton/St Helens/Warrington want to give me a price for removing it? and then after a month of so fitting it again? Cheers

in the haynes manual shows how the 1600's changed from mk2 to mk3. the engines did change slightly but the head on the mk3 1600 engine is nothing like mine:S

c16 and then the rest has faded away. I have just found two pictures off different websites of the engines-
This is the 1.6 that mine should look like according to haynes-

This is the 2L 8V engine according to haynes-

Now the head on mine is the same as the 2L 8V and the dizzy etc is the same however i dont have all the injection bits behind the head its just the carb etc as the 1.6 should be, im very confused with it ha ha

its simple if its got a large rocker cover on,
its going to be a large block engine lol

would the 2L 8v head fit on the 1600 bottom end and gear box? if yes would it of made it alot quicker? or how will i find out exactly what it is, as when i do the rebuild i need to get the full gasket set etc so i dont want to be messing around and getting the wrong ones

sounds like a 1600 bigblock. Should be small clock with a C16 eng code & if it came from a post 88 car.

Definitely a wheeled hydraulic hoist i would say. With a mk2 cav what i did was, by and large, keep the hoist still, and wheel the car in and out of the area!
The wheels are horribly small on engine lifts and everything ends up swaying around if you move the hoist too much.

Yes mate was proberbly the most common engine fitted to the mk3 cavalier mate very rare they were 1.6 or 2.0lts.

on log book its a 1598cc very confused the guy who i bought it off was approx 40 so doubt he would of done it, or he would of put it on the advert:S
could be a 1.6 big block. i can only assume they are spi also as ive never seen one

They were all small block spi's burgo in the mk3 cav the only ones that were big block were the very early carb ones i think.

ye i think you are right as the 1.6 in haynes looks nothing like the rocker on mine. and i ordered a rocker cover gasket for the 1.6 as thats what i thought it was and it was too short so can only guess its a 1.8 like you say, will have to order another rocker cover gasket so will get the 1.8 and see

1.6 or 1.8, would not even mess about with it, underpower'd POS that they are
someone on here said that a few 1600 mk3 cavs were big block, but i can't remember who
