View Full Version : Hitting the books
I have just signed up for a home study course in forensic science with the UK open learning company. (as thats what I wanna do for a job) All the books arrived today and I feel like im back at school!
Seeing as its been nearly 10 years since I did my GCSE's, I think its going to be a bit strange to get back into studying mode. Now where did i put my pencil case!!?
If anyone has done a home course before and has any tips or advice, it would be greatly recieved. :d
Its a bit too late for nightmare stories of home learning courses as I have already paid my £330 in full. I shall look forward to my micky mouse certificate and mug when I finish it
A forward warning, If Jack brings me to a PNG event like billing, I may be practising some skills on willing (or unwilling) volunteers. just pretend to be dead while i draw a chalk outline round you. :)

do you get a corpse in instalments?? like those 'build a submarine' magazines
or do you have to practice on a tramp or something?

lol. I wondered what that toe was doing in the fedex box. CBA to wait for all the parts to arrive so ill just experiment on Jack. i definitely think he will be of use in the toxicology section!
I'll be a dab hand in the dissection section after my op lol
dont upset her now RJ, she might remove youre other ball after she's done reading the cutting up part.

I might ask if i can assist. it will be a good learning curve.
My sister done a course with the Open Uni, a from home course. As far as i know she got on very well with it & found it pretty good. Fitted it in around her son's needs/schooling etc etc

thanks. They have given me up to 12 months to do it but say it should only be 80 study hours so i reckon I can do it in less time than that. ill take it to work with me when im on nights. it might help me stay awake :)

Wish I could do something like that but I work in the police HQ so we have to pretend to be all professional and answer 999's. I mean, how inconsiderate of the public. we have got 3 massive flat screen tellys in the control room showing the news channels incase a major disaster kicks off or something and our inspector "accidentally" put some babe station channel on once. then the remote "got stuck" 50" boobs right in your face is enough to make you wanna giggle while talking to some dottery old dear who has forgotton where she parked her car
don't all police still play car snooker on nightshifts???
you know, pull a red, then a colour, then another red etc..... lowest score buys the chips.

I heard forieng HGV drivers do that, but more of a contact motorsport kinda thing lol
Well I have got 2 hours of my night shift to go and I have read through half of my initial reading material. (its been a quiet night for criminals!)
So far, I have read up on some really, sometimes morbidly, fascinating stuff
e.g. the use of insects to determine details of crime scenes in forensics, understanding injuries on murder victims and computer crime.
Interesting fact - Did you know that in the UK, it is actually illegal to view or distribute pornography via the internet. this is why many of the porn sites visible are hosted from countries outside the America's and the EU.
so tut tut anyone and everyone that has ever viewed a porn site. lol

That'd be everyone in jail then lol
My Mrs did some nail "technicians" course through home learning and is currently doing a marine recruitment diploma for her job through it as well, seems quite a good set up and she enjoyed it.
Remember if you ever meet me, that although I smell like a rotten corpse, I'm alive and well, so don't be sticking no tags around me toes and no cutting me up.
i bet that's the first weeks homework, tying tags on appendages, then week 2 its twanging latex gloves on your wrist in a rectal search stylee, week 3 is bagging things up
the downside of this course is that if you dig the garden, it will take bloody ages with a pointing trowel & toothbrush (use jacks)
**UPDATE**
Well the course is done and I gots my shiny certificate. yay
And this week I am on a CSI attachment with work. I went to view a post mortem today eek! but it was fascinating and has made me want to be a CSI even more!! They actually have a spare post at the moment but the recruitment freeze at work means they cant advertise and have to stay really busy. GRRR
oh well, fingers crossed for the future. Ill just have to sit tight and wait.....
