hi i have a 1988 nova 1.2l. and its started making a noise, as if something is catching. its coming from the rear drivers side. so i replace the bearing, no difference, so replaced the drum, (and bearing again), still no difference, im sure its not the breaks catching. also when i tighten the bearings up you cant turn the wheel, but if you loosen it there is too much play, it also heats up really quick with just a quick run round the block. im at a bit of a loss really as you cant have the bearings too loose but if i tighten them to how they should be it hard to turn the wheel. any suggestions as to the cause would be greatly appreciated.
thanks
ben
you say tighten the bearings to how they should be!!! how is that exactly in your opinion??
I've been getting this problem too, Always do in the winter my handbrake sticks on abit & sounds like the rear brakes are catching.
as for the bearings are you not ment to torque them up to 20? then back them off until you can move the washer abit with a screw driver.

Was the bearing a nice tight fit in the hub/drum when you replaced it? If it is a sloppy fit this might be the cause. (ie wear in the drum)

Oh, sorry, you said you renewed the drum.
Was the stub axle a bit ugly looking, ie has the bearing been chafing/working on it?
the h/brake cable needs slackening when drums get replaced. the backplate could be catching. you should never tighten up a bearing like that
agreed/\ money on the back plate touching, but get a haynes and follow the brake setup and bearing setup

i mean tighten it up so there is no play in the wheel.

i have renewed all the breaks but i slackened the handbrake off so its not catching. i can t be the breaks binding anyway otherwise i would have trouble getting the hub off and i don't. i think my next step is a new axle sub (£65.00) from the dealer, rob dogs!! as its the only thing i haven't replaced. whatr do you think ??

What about the back plate where the drum goes onto being a wee bit bent and catching the actual drum itself ? Mine done that a few times
