View Full Version : C21XE running R1 carbs
Well guys after a fair few failed attempts to get a nova project finished, i Am eventually making some progress with this one!
I will update as much as i can but with wee one on way any day now, it may take a while to get going again
I bought the shell back in May 09 from a mate who had it dry stored for a few years, Along with it came some fresh painted cavalier slabs with wolfsburg stickers for some reason.
I had already started to collect most of the parts when i broke and stripped a rally car shell that i had, so i removed the cage from that with the intention of using it in this car now.
Originally i had intended to run a e16se, then it changed to a c16xe and then again to my now engine the 2.1 xe which had been newly rebuilt
with a alright spec of 2.1 rebore, head work, double valve springs and arp and a few other things, I then bought a set of R1 carbs and a bp grassings manifold off of ebay, which included the dizzy for the xe, but i had already bought the mehajolt unit to run it on.
So on with the pics for the moment, and thanks for reading :thumb:

I like the painted on boot vinyl, might look better with black grab handle though.
Ok some more images of the next part of the transformation
Now once i had it up to my work shop i started to have a good prod about it for rot, we all know what like these things are like lol.
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE7.jpg
The rear passengers corner
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE21.jpg
Usual hole in the boot corner a lot of novas seem to go here:wtf:
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE23.jpg
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE10.jpg
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE9.jpg
Yet another bit under the scuttle panel
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE20.jpg
And the rear panel
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE22.jpg
Underside
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE24.jpg
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE29.jpg
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE25.jpg
THis is inside of the front panel, so i decided that i should change the full front end, just so it doesn't come back
Cheers for the replys guys, unfortunatly it never stayed this colour even though i would have loved to, its being built to be used, so white was the cheapest way to go lol
So following on with the front panel being rusty up it went on the 360 spit that we have
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE26.jpg
And start choppinglol
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE28.jpg
And more chopping
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE27.jpg
Front on eventually
Now once it was up on the spit we could look at the rusty spring seat at the rear
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE47.jpg
Not to good i think, but it plated up nicely, and all welded back up without a problem
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE48.jpg
Strengthing kit going on, used everything inc sump guard mounts incase i decide to use my guard i have
So i stripped all the underseal off of the underside and arches, what a bitch of a job and by god does it not go like silly string when you use a wire wheel on it
i Then red oxided the whole of the underside, arches and engine bay one all the welding had been done and dusted where we end up with this
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE36.jpg
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE35.jpg
I then used a few bags of 3M bag sealer on the rear arches at the panel joints
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE38.jpg
And the whole lot was topped off with a few tins of 3m black underseal

just looked like it was the same one; a project that never got started..
will look the bizz this mate, thanks to the spit
So during the time all this was going on i was buying parts and selling others
So after a wee pm i secured these from shaun o donnell ( yellow saloon fame!)

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE135.jpg
Some ceseros with all 4 caps of stevie78 (k151rhs)
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE54.jpg
These will be painted white of black im not 100% yet
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE63.jpg
And my original engine i was going to use
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE68.jpg
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE118.jpg
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE68.jpg
And my new one ;)
And the fueling side
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE33.jpg
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE116.jpg
And the ignition side of it, megajolt which used (Cough)Ford(cough) edis ignition side with a 36-1 toothed wheel on the bottom pulley
Ah mate the Spit makes it so much easier to work on the underside of the car, its getting it onto the spit which is the problem as its a fair height off the floor, but a few guys and you can lift it in
scott.parker
06-02-10, 11:34 PM
Yeah im sure some one on here use to own that shell years ago, got it painted then did nothing with it etc..
Funny how most mk2's rot in the same place's like the behind dash, and rear inner wheel arch bits etc.
Looks like your on top of it tough dude, good luck with it.
Scott
How saying that maybe it is, as it used to be red and it had the metallic clapped on top, and my mate did get it from down the road someplace lol
deanwilko
07-02-10, 11:47 AM
love the colour.
Cheers Dean, but unfortunatly it didnt stay that colour
But some more pics i have

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/P6130064.jpg
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/P6130066.jpg
Some better ones of the carbs and inlet
So once all the welding was done i started on the cage, now i had to cut the door bars to get it out of the original shell, so we welded saddle brackets onto it so i could still have the use of it
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE11.jpg
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE12.jpg

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE58.jpg
And one of my seats that i won on ebay from nova rally
So with all the welding done that car was back on to the deck
and on with the panels to see what like everything lines up with the new front end
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE49.jpg
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE50.jpg
Pair of rust free doors i had from yet another failed project lol

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/C21XE74.jpg
And another one of my seats, these things are silly light, iirc around 25kg with the frames
What are the centre caps on the slabs on the first page?
They are wolfsburg stickers mate, dunno why on a vaux as its a vw badge

Congratulations on the new addition. Car looks really good, what are you using it for (sorry if already been said).
That last picture is really cool, both nice looking cars.
Going to be a weekend toy mate when i can use it, and once i get it running, it shouldnt take to long as i have most of the parts now.

motor looking sweet :D
Well bit of a time since a last update, since then i have had to cut out more from the inner leg to clear the altenator and also my trigger wheel for the mega jolt as it was a bit tight and would have caught with engine movement.
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/P1000595.jpg
Alos got my radiator fitted after waiting nearly a month from the supplier who had ordered a heater matrix first time round:wtf:
I then mounted my Frontera front mount fan which clears up a bit more room in the bay
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/P1000858.jpg
I then set about mounting my cut off switch in the dash, so a bit of head scratching and i decided to mount it in the position switch for the heaters
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/P1000859.jpg
Rear beam was put on also with rally design bushes once i got both as i ordered online thinking you got both to have one arrive at the door lol
along with some braided pipes to tidy the rear a bit, its only a temp beam as going to get one blasted depending if i run drums or discs as i have both
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/P1000861.jpg
Next step was to get my cage in as it has to be in before the dash, so few bolts later and we have this

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/P1000866.jpg

Looking good mate, im down to the workshop friday night and saturday so i will drop that lugged cables dropped of to you. Get this beast fired up soon :d
Once i have a battery and a few other things bud, and we will get it fired up
Update time, but no pics at the moment, SHE RUNS!!!
After a bit of pissing about with misfires etc she burst into life, holding oil pressure good to, small oil leak from timing end someplace but i reckon its the rocker cover gasket, and shes a bit tappy lol
novalovingned
18-07-10, 07:46 PM
Tappy........ understatment :p Glad it went in the end. Flames had me jumping about once or twice lol
Well got a few hours into the car, managed to get the rest of the major stuff done and some minor stuff also
List so far left to do
fill brake system
get the exhaust sorted to have them mated up with original system
some bulbs to replace and thats about it
So now for some pics
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/P1000914.jpg
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/P1000913.jpg

http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/P1000917.jpg
And then the harnesses, both are out of date now, but thats doesn't matter for me :thumb:
So had a wee leak from the temp sensor so i popped it out, wrapped a bit of PTFE around it and began to tighten it up, thinking it was taken a while to actually tighten then snap i took the head right off of the sensor, needless to say a few choice words were uttered lol
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/P1000910.jpg
The offending artical
So had to take the full thermostat housing off and drill out what was left with a drill, luckily it came out after a bit of pissing about.
Also got my lambda boss welded in for when we get the wideband in
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/P1000909.jpg
And how i fitted my trigger wheel and pully
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/P1000908.jpg
So then dicided to wheel her outside and take a few pics to, i think the back end is a bit high, its on a bilstien kit, B8 i think, so maybe -60 springs i think

Awesome build - you seriously need some track-like wheels though (after you have slammed the rear) :thumb:
looks sweet but white/silver seats ???? bound to get dirty lol
I have a set of ceseros to go on once they are painted and i get tyres, problem it i still have th elip son front and rear arches.
Yeah the grey seats, are going to get dirty, just have to make sure no overalls when your in the car, need as little clothes as poss anyway, those seats are tight lol
looks sweet but white/silver seats ???? bound to get dirty lol
Just thinking the same!
Looks a nice build...
Would have loved black seats, but mah i have them, and its built to be used lol
Oh well, they'll be black soon enough!!!!

Car's a credit to you, lovely build.
Cheers Tom, been a long time since i had a car this far on.
I can get you some Sparco Rev's in black if your interested
Thanks for the offer Cle, but will be more money laid out which could be used for other things, just need to dye the fabric black lol
Well a step closer to having her finished, noticed when she was running that i had a bad oil leak from the timing side, so after a strip down i noticed the camshaft seals were seeping, so ordered a new set and have them fitted, just the timing to put back on now,
Also got the exhaust done, the brakes bled, and a set of -60mm springs from tony(cheers by the way)
So hoping for a wee test on thursday once i get some time to spend on her
Well im almost there now, after getting my oil leak sorted i balanced my carbs up, and got her running good. just got a small amount of playing about with the maps.
So i got my wheels back last week after being painted, so i got some tyres that will do a track day i had laying about and got them fitted just a balance needed now.
My dash is also being flocked this week by a lad who does it local to me so can get that fitted shortly, so had a itch to take it out after being persuaded my novalovingned so i had a short blast up the farm road and seems to be all running good. so anyway up with the images

Looks well now :thumb: Hopefully see this some time this year :)
Well still not on the road yet, but getting married in 3 weeks time doesn't help the finances at the moment lol.
But ever since painting my wheels black i never likes the whole look of the inside of the arch being black also, so i popped out a tin on white and got brushing, got to admit it does look a lot better.
So started with this lot
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/P1010504.jpg
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/P1010503.jpg
And a few hours later ended with this
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/P1010505.jpg
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/P1010506.jpg
Also got my rocker cover painted and also sanded down the plug cover as i didnt like the writing on it since i got it.
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/P1010507.jpg
Also i few week ago i came across a thread on electrolosis rust removal, which basically uses an electrolyte solution ( water and soda crystals) and a low voltage power pack, battery charger would work but i have an adjustable pack
You connect the negitive terminal to the part you want de-rusted and the positive to a steel plate once powered up it starts to convert rust back to basic form, so i tried it on a set of brake calipers i had, this is without wire brushing with a machine, just a gentle rub by hand
My set up looks like this
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/P1010525.jpg
And a before and in progress image
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/P1010487.jpg
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/P1010488.jpg
http://i157.photobucket.com/albums/t74/Cheeze1982/c21xe/P1010489.jpg
And you can see in the above images of the red calipers thats the ones i used
And also a link to the site http://www.rickswoodshopcreations.com/Miscellaneous/Rust_Removal.htm
good work, when fitting the trigger wheel is it possible for the crank shaft to be 180 degrees out? i have to fit my trigger wheel soon
As long as you set it a tdc first John, then work from there, how have you mounted your sensor
ok thanks, i seen the guide on autosport labs and was just making sure.
i have not mounted my sensor yet but here is the mount i am using, i just need to bolt a bracket to the engine then weld this mount on
