its funny............. if my brakes failed, i'd yank on the handbrake...........

and if my throttle stuck full open (or these days the potentiometer shorts out) i would turn the key off......

50p bet says all these claims are from america.....

audi sold a huge number of 100/200 series cars in the 80's, but 3 people claimed in court that their automatic cars were jumping into gear and lurching forward on their own................only in america...... and suddenly all over america, every audi accident was caused by this gear thing..

Cup of tea iirc, beggars belief that some people can either be A, that stupid, or B, have not killed themselves many times over already.

All joking aside, i have wondered why they didnt turn off the car, use brakes and handbrake or knock it out of drive/gear, but the fact remains that four people have died as a result of this 'fault' so can we show at least a little respect please peeps!

Made me laugh because there was some woman on the radio going on about how she was terrified because she got stuck going 70mph up a hill even tho she was pressing the brakes and burning rubber. I just thought why didnt she put the handbreak on and turn the car off???

lol heard that one as well

Knock it into natural, ok it might blow up the engine but if it saves your life :d
Turn the engine off at the key, apparently they cant tell you to do that when u ring up 999/911 because if they turned the key and the steering lock came on and crashed and lived. Then a big sue cause would open :tard:

Brakes/e-brake - erm 70 mph up a hill i guess it would stop. But if you was on the dual carrage way depending on condtion of discs and pads then i think they would burn out lol. Yanking the e-brake at 70 mph would be bloody scary imo. I mean in your local shopping market carpark you yank the handbrake on at 20 mph and it flicks you round pretty quick lol

But yeah poor family and there firends, the recorded phone call was shocking though to be honest. :tard:

Not a chance. High gears dont have any torque, you could easily stop a car in 5th gear at 70 with your foot flat on the throttle and flat on the brake, even something with a lot of horsepower. The problem is, people just panic and when the car doesn't respond how they expect, they just clam up

The winnebego incedent was quality. The owner took the word 'Automatic' a little too seriously lol Reminds me of a clasic Jethro joke, when he's stopped by the police.

'Are you the driver of this car?'
'Well its Automatic, but i've got to try to be here if I can' lol

Was cruise control iirc Lee, he switched it on and went for a cuppa, then successfully sued due to the fact it does not state in the user manual that you must remain at the wheel once cruise control has been activated:eek:

My other half had her pug 206 recalled a while back to have a pin that holds the brake pedal inplace changed, apparently the brake pedals had a trend of falling off!!

Let's face it if your driving down any road at a good speed and the throttle jams or a brake pedal falls off most of us will crash! If you are lucky enough to have time and space to react then fair play, but you've gotta wonder about the claims for compensation against the car makers.

When my throttle jammed fully open on my old nova i managed to get it home using brakes and gears but when i stopped and got out my brakes were on fire!!lol

i am not wanting to demean anybody who has just died in a crash, but if i was driving a car full of my family & it suddenly went full throttle i needed to stop it safely, i think i would have managed somehow..... my parental instinct would kick in big style & i would have tried everything to save us all

Agreed.

Having worked in the OEM/Tier1 industry you get to know the 'issues' with systems and the ETB setup is one of the heaviest tested bit of kit on the car because of this problem.
Now since its only a sticky pedal and not a shorting pot, all the driver needs to do is put their foot under the throttle pedal and lift it up. Or key off/Neutral. I bet toyota would give you a free repair for killing the engine/car aslong as you dont die yourself and your family suing them.

Another stupid US car suing thing was the bloke who ran over his daughter who was playing behind the car on the drive.... the reason for suing... Nissan had a reversing camera as an optional extra that they said should have been as std due to the danger of running people over! Nissan went to their house with a vehicle fitted with said camera and recreated the accidet, the camera wouldnt have seen the child either ffs. The family still won the case despite being negligent themselves

That happened in my old Fiat once, first thing I did was tap my foot under the pedal to lift it back up lol

Mind you, 903cc Fiat on full throttle was about 12mph lol

given the structural integrity of a fiat, 12mph is taking ones life into ones hands lol

its funny............. if my brakes failed, i'd yank on the handbrake...........

tbh after being in a 40/50mph crash BECAUSE the dam breaks failed......The handbreak is pretty usless...esp when it comes out the frickin floor!!! :wtf: (it was an escort so yes to be expected lol  )

Personal experience told me to slam the dam peice of crap in to 1st and hope to god the gear box doesnt blow too quick but holds long enough to make the impact thats impossible to prevent.....less painful....not to mention hope you hit a wall sideways rather than head on :thumb:

kinda worked for me! i got out with a bruise on my head, sore boobies from them being the relyable air bags, and one hell of a pain from whiplash

a mk3 escort nearly killed me, i've still got the screws in my knee.. they don't crash too well...

I've handbraked a nova at about 50mph before now.

i've stopped a scania with total service brake failure (if i'd pulled the handbrake, i'd have killed people, i was in a contraflow, luckily the workmen had gone home as i smeared about 200 cones all over their work.....

Personally id have just knocked it into neutral. Manual or auto you'll still roll to a stop whilst the engine eats itself....

Happens to mine every couple months because the throttle linkage is worn (and could be a better design) and also for about a week before that before i realised it was the crappy car mats I had that had moved and it was getting stuck under lol
