bad points horrendous french build quality, engine with a reputation for exploding...

good points: very few left now

My mate had 2, about 8 years ago, nightmare to work on but FAF!

He was one quoted £1800 for a head gasket changelol

Pretty quick in standard form

Too many people get them, put a bleed valve on turn up too much and bang.

Good mate had a high spec one few years back and was nothing but trouble tbh.

Leave the boost at sensible levels and they won't blow HG's etc.

They aren't a bad design but too many were raped by clueless fools.

iv had 1 and although they arnt suppose to be reliable mine lasted very strong, mine had a receipt for an uprated headgasket set so this may have helped. i did a 400 mile round trip to santa pod in mine ran it 10 times maybe more and got me home fine, i also drove 150 miles to swap it.

have u got a certain 1 lined p to buy? it may be my old 1

i worked with a woman who had one when they were new.... it was std & she drove it 5 miles to work up a b road at normal driving speeds & parked it up.. it then spent the next 40 mins with fans whirring to cool it down

Had one for about 18 months. Never let me down at all engine wise and was used daily running 18psi on a T25 turbo. Had two clutches though!!

The car I regret selling the most to be honest. Looked exactly like the one in the picture except it was on Clio valver wheels.

I'd a Raider a while back there. Quick enough wee car, didn't have it long enough to test reliability.

I resprayed it, and what I did notice was that the panels were paper thin, look at them the wrong way and they could dent!!!!

my mates had a few in the past, i remember the engines not lasting long and the electrics were well dodgy on all of them. he spent loads of money on them from gt tuning, his last one went like sti! off a shovel, but blew up in the end!

get one and rewire it and drop a vaux engine in win win win.

A mate of mine had one 12 years ago identical to the one on the picture, I've always wanted one but they where terrible for head gaskets so it put me off, my mate had 3 gaskets on his.

Put a Volvo (the cheese wedge shape motor) 1.7 turbo engine in one and you've cracked it.

i currently own one and to say the engine is weak is wrong tbh the bottom ends are good for 230-240bhp its the head thats the weak point but if replaced with a group a gasket set and always make sure the fuelling is spot on and coolant levels are sound then the hg problem never comes back :), iv currently got mine running at 16psi on the t2 turbo had all the carb rejetted and set up with a wideband have quite a bit more done to it as well and boy are they quick got plenty more plans for this :).
as has been stated if you want rid of the c1j engine that its best to stick the b18ft out of the 1.7 volvo 440-480 as these are fuel injected they give a much better way of delivering power and alot easier to set up.
i paid a grand for my r5 gt turbo and its by far the best 1k iv ever spent if you want any info or tips then drop me a pm and ill be happy to help out

Put a Volvo (the cheese wedge shape motor) 1.7 turbo engine in one and you've cracked it.

which comes as standard in the gtx and monaco.. minus the turbo lol
I had a tidy monaco few years back, but it still had overheating/leaks lol

ill get pics of my gt turbo posted up once iv got enough posts, another polular option is to drop the clio 172 engine in there then turbo that, there is a guy on the rtoc with a 172 turbo engined r5 that hit 11.27 1/4 mile

03-02-10, 08:59 AM
I had a standard one 10 years back. It was faultless for the year I had it.

Then my bro had a 250bhp one about 5 years ago, uprated everything. He'd had it about 2 hours before it exploded with me driving. He had it rebuilt to the same spec, but then never had the balls to run any more than standard boost, not that I blame him. Shame really, was one of his dream cars and I ruined it for him.

BluntyR5GTT
03-02-10, 09:18 AM
lol that sounds like a typical fuelling prob there they are a swine get right

i think an ideal still decent useable power level on the r5 is around 180bhp

Lee H
03-02-10, 09:38 AM
Mine was about 180bhp. Had group A carb, front mount intercooler, t25, larger downpipe and 2.5" side exit exhaust. Lump was standard apart from uprated head gasket.

Reckon it would have beaten my XE Nova to about 70 but was running out of puff top end. Handled far better than the Nova too!

BluntyR5GTT
03-02-10, 11:45 AM
sounded like a good spec there and it would defo do an xe nova upto around 80ish mph main factor of the top end not being good is of course they only 1.4 8v but a way of getting some extra horses at the top end is to fit a t28 and a 285 cam run that at about 25psi and watch it fly haha

is that you car in your avatar if it is then that is one nice nova

Lee H
03-02-10, 12:16 PM
Was a cool car, just bleeding me dry on fuel as it was quite thirsty plus I had the Nova in my avatar in bits and had to decide which one to keep. The Nova won. The next stage for power on the 5 would have meant a cam change and stuff and it was starting to get expensive.

Still got the Nova, there is a link to my build thread on my signature.

03-02-10, 01:04 PM
I had one, very fun but also very fragile. When i got it i got the silly bleed valve taken off and got put back to standard with good service and tune. Can be reliable if you dont rag it everywhere. Wouldn't use one daily though, not very good on fuel. Needs the fan on all the time to stop over heating. Trim is typical french quality :). Never had much problems with it apart from the starter motor and i had it 8 months but lad i sold it to had it blown up within days lol

03-02-10, 01:19 PM
Always loved the look of them, that one pictured is really nice nice very old skool (just what i wanted when i was 17) ~but then i realised they were quite horrid inside and not easy to find cheep, or a clean reliable one around when i looked, glad i never got one, i know it would of cost me the world to keep! lol

My mate had 1 that was 250bhp was fooling rapid the fastest car I've ever been in, apparently it was the 9th fastest in Europe. **** build quality tho very French and was very unreliable kept cracking the liners.

Mike
03-02-10, 03:10 PM
Yes, i had a wicked one when i was 17ish, ended with a massive fireball at about 70 or 80ish tho.

(not read thread yet tho lol)

EDIT: Now ive read thread...well page 1...

There are awesome little cars, but buy very carefully. They can rot like a bitch under the bodykit too. Mine ran about 300bhp IIRC but i bought it with all the work already done an gave it death. IIRC mine was either Bilstein or Spax suspension that was on it, handled very very well but drank fuel like a complete bitch! Inveitibly exploded, shot a piston & rod through the block ripping off the inlet manifold & carb & went up in a massive fireball about half mile from my parents house.

If your young insurance is a massive killer on them! I paid £3k odd at 17 :(

BluntyR5GTT
03-02-10, 04:20 PM
tbf when they go bang at over 220bhp i dont think we should be suprised i mean its only a very old design 1.4 8v engine running a retro carb.

for a fun factor iv never owned a car like it and iv owned some pretty good and fast cars but this is the only one i dont wanna get out of once im driving not sure what bhp im running at the moment its prob around 135-140 max the limiting factor is the turbo as im still on the standard t2.

main areas for rust are the sills and around the front windscreen also the battery tray needs an eye keeping on it

That car is really nice!i think either that or the raider blue are the best colours they came in.

I went out in one a good 5 years back and still to this day it was one of the quickest cars ive been in!I dont know what power it was running but was told it had been highly tuned(and i can believe it!lol ).On the back window it had:
Built by the french
Tuned by ...... (forgot the name that it was!think it was gt tuning)
Driven by lunaticslol

The video on youtube with the kitcar trying to catch a white R5gtt always makes me want one just to thrash it everywherelol .

THats nice /\

As said, cool old skool cars, rarely than novas these days. And they are quick for a 1.4 tractor engine, but have a habit of dying, turbo heat causes carb fuel problems etc etc!
