Tommy novas E16 turbo build

Thought it was about time to start my build thread as i have just started work on the nova many of you will know my old car the red gsi that has now gone and i have a white gsi sadly it is not as mint as i thought it was when i bought it but im goin to hopefully get it to a level where im happy with it...

So plans are to get the engine out fully stitch weld and strenthend the bay also weld up afew bits and bobs around the car this bein boot floor drivers side splash gard and one hole in the passenger rear foot well then fit two new front wings uprated the brakes 2.0 16v jobies new exhaust system (ashley full system 3' outward rolled lip also need to change the boot lid as rust is also hiding on the lip then hopefully a full respray new GSI door and boot decal and red bumper pin strip..

True will but just time to move on had enough of that red one was a money pit pretty much did all i wanted to it plus i miss my old white gsi and wanted another simons was goin so snaped it up..

do miss the old red one im guna after owning it for 3 years but this one will be nicer when done..

Will up date this tomorrow with afew picks but i have had a good weekend running round picking up parts : ) went all the way to see SR JACK to pick up two wings and a boot lid then over to sumerset to pick up four astra gsi fan blades very happy with every thing had afew bargins the astra wheels hadnt been used for 12 years so were in lovely nick just need tyres now but im also thinking of painting them first maybe white or a darker grey still thinking about that one but as i say i will up load pics later..

Cheers dude its goin abit slow at the minute but hopefully by next weekend the bay will be striped ready to plate and stict weld..

Finally an up date as iv been waiting for the engine to get here just over 4 weeks but its here now so can crack on with getting the engine bay sticted then get the engine fitted so that should be sorted in the next few weeks

Well guy heres the only update i have which is bad im afraid..

went over to see the gsi at welsh coast customs and had some bad news as today was the first day the nova was getting striped so it can have the bay sticted and paint but sadly alot more rot then i knew of was found all over the car which means the nova is goin to be scraped truely gutted as i really wanted to get this one back to a tidy state but its the sin bin for this one sadly.. bad timess..

Yea im gutted, but i trust Ga and his work he told me id be looking at around £800 to 1000 quids worth of welding thats without sticting the bay and fitting the E16SE Turbo soo i just said ok fair enough nock it on the head...

Real shame,
Might be worth offering it up for sale ( the shell) as someone may have use for it of is in the fabrication trade so will be able to repair it on the cheap. Or maybe finding a clean shell and re-shelling it perhaps?

what ever happens now its goin to be a white gsi or black im unsure atm lol found a sri shell with sunroof so it will look like a genuine gsi when finished so thats a plus..

Thanks guys I had no Idea It was so bad loads of bodge jobs have been done over the years lots of filler and patchs all over the place shocking tbh. But onwards and upwards ayyy, it's not all bad as I'm reshelling it with Will F's Sri shell.

Yea Edd, it always looked alright when i had it, i never noticed any root in it other than the rear spring mount and the boot floor. But i had both bits welded and it all looked ok. Wheres all the filler/bodges etc tom? I didnt have any body work done to it, just the odd bit of welding.

Shame it has to be scraped.

You will see the pictures later !! iv only has it 6 months and its had it, there's nothing I can do tho as it's been rotten for along time looking at it, the rear spring mounts are **** the car colapst when they lifted it up it's planted on the floor now the only part thats fine is the roof, the splash Gards are only held on by underseal there well and truely fudged.

Really? Cant believe how rotten it is. I had one spring mount done because it was sat on the boot floor and the other one was fine. So just applied more underseal to it. When i bought it off mike he told me that he used to underseal it and waxoil in the chassis legs. But the other day my mate said that the underseal traps the water and gravi gaurd is beter.

No worries Tommy - I spoke to Kris and he really couldnt believe how bad it is - I may pop down later to see the damage!

The Sri shell is a low mileage shell (they all say that though! lol) its been sat for 5 years and is a 1993 car, so has only done 11 years work really! All teh panels are original, hence why it needs door, arches etc, but the important bits are great!

It has had £400 worth of stitch welding too! :eek:

Any ways heres the new shell which used to belong to Will F J plate Sri really happy with it only needs afew patchs and arches which is great as the engine bays already stict welded ready for the E16SE Turbo to go in to so thats one lest job to be done... Heres the pics

yea it is a shame but let's face it, it's the same as a gsi as it has tilt and slide sun roof plus once all the parts have been swoped over you would never know .

That's the only way you could do it mate - Swap the floor plate and engine bay tags and therefore you have a GSi but it is very very illegal (Ringing)

Well...It's illegal if you get caught and plenty of people do it

Just check for welds around the floor plate is about the only way to tell...But they can be hidden very well and the chances of getting caught are slim

Risky stuff though and I wouldn't advise it

But again...Folk have done and do it

i poped over to the garage before after work to pick up my gsi fan blades as i sold them to a matie off here was pleased to see Ga has been doin abit more on the nova painted the bay and fitted the engine still needs to flat the paint and stone chip the lower pannal.

its a nippy car for a 1.3 to be fair to it but they look horrid lol

The car had history with previous owners via Chris GSI on here iirc. he always bragged how clean it was etc.... one of them things. :(

C.G im truely gutted about scraping J633 MDF but im past it now there nothing i can do without spending stupid money im happy with the new shell

Try spending £90 on PAS pipes that dont fit when you get home & cant re-use or get a refund on, when your on the dole/out of work. Heartbreaking nearly!!

Yea true this shells pretty good just bits and bobs need doin it will look just like the old one when finished but fresh and faster lol.. whats the best bet to get more bhp out of her some guys on here have around 180/200 i wantttt :d

Im pretty happy to be honest the cars getting there now just needs the lower front pannal welding then painting with stone chip also need to get the engine wired in then hopefully if alls well off for an mot.. :)

Update

Right well the nova is now running sounds sweet as a nut too..:) also its been under sealed / wax oiled theres just afew bits and bobs left to do then its off the the spray shop on monday to have the rear archs replaced then painted so hopefully fingers crossed within the next two weeks she should be on the road. funds are realllly Tight at the minute as the original plans have changed so much due to the old shell bein to rotten its costing me £££s more then i planed to spend but should be worth it in the end just got so much to pay for still needs Tax MOT and insurance :( might possible have to miss pvs i really dont want to but looking at funds at the minute its looking at slim.

Don't rush it to PV mate. By the Sunday afternoon you'll have realised the rush wasnt worth it.
I can tell you now that engine is jinxed when it comes to getting it to PVS anyway. lol

All I know is, I never got that engine to PV. Not always its fault. But I never got it to PV. Saying that my GSi only did it once & that was last year.

You'll be fine. What I was getting at, is 2 years ago I desperately tried to get my GSi finished (in n/a form) PV week. But it wasnt to be & I went in my Fiesta. By the time the weekend was over, I wasnt bothered & glad I was finishing it properly & in good time without making shortcuts.

Not much to update on this at the minute but the cars currently waiting to have archs and be painted had afew probs last week as found out the diff was fooked in the gearbox but manged to get my old one off my old engine best bit bein it was for free which helps as moneys very tight but yea we should see some good progess in the next week or so hopefully..

got a small oil leak from a crappy old pipe at the bottom of the engine just noticed it now so thats guna need changing also need to ask about having it tuned as its running abit high atm it will come in time tho..

Small update on what i have been up to focusing on the interior abit now as i have full leather to fit at some point and thought it would be nice to colour coded some of the plastic piller pieces sadly ran out of paint lol so will have to do the other bits again.

Yea il leave it to a body shop i think lol i really need the large gsi boot vinyl first tbh other wise its just goin to look abit odd, the thing is with parts as rare as these you can never find them or know if a vinyl is goin to pop up forsale, i may have to look into having a custom one made up, butknowing my luck il get one made up and a gm one will come up for sale lol

WOOHOOO finaly an update..

Afew of you might know that i have had afew probs with my back had to have a mri scan and a physiotherapist look over me, found out afew things one that i have scoliosis in my spine also my lower abdominal muscles aren't working basicly they are soild with no movement and loads of stupid things to do with my body flexibility, and to top it off losing my job its been a nightmare this month not ideal when your near the end of building a car, as you can understand money is very tight so been on a super low budget..
but yea the nova has had to wait iv not been able to get to up to see how its doin,

Finaly managed to get over to the garage today to have alook at how they are getting on, was happy to see the new archs are fitted p/s just needs sanding and flating then abit of prep work on the d/s then they are goin to start on the whole car.

Does anyone know if paint codes change over the years for example im after glacier white which im told is 10l now i know shades may be differnt but how do i get the same sade of white my car is do i need to ask for glacier white for a 92 nova gsi ? or do i just ask for 10l glacier white sorry if this is confusing but i want the same shade as the original car

10l should be sound tommy im sure, you may have a slight difference with aged paint but a good compound and buff should improve any old paint finish

Small update :)

Well today i have been cleaning the inner archs up then gave them a nice coat of anti rust primer after that painted with stone chip paint, later on i started on my wings cleaned all the inside up then painted with stone chip paint again im happy with how it went to be fair, the novas due to come out the spray shop next friday fingers crossed we shall see ..

Thanks matie haha get it sorted :) i have everything i need only thing now is painting it , gearbox needs changing, afew bits and bobs then mot probs be another 2 weeks till i get close to having her on the road :(

Get it sorted soon as fella :),, i started mine at the start of march so its not too bad really.. its guna be a daily for the time bein i will be sorting out a daily car after tho i may get a little van unsure yet :)

yeah thats quite a quick build especially with having to reshell aswell.
if i get these new wings will be giving the boy that origionally painted it a shout shortly to do the front again cause it was perfect.
then we'll have to have a meet.
