well, ive come to think there is something wrong with my stealthshed. my old 1.2 4spd which was standard id had over a ton. my 1.3, which had a 4-1 manifold and full stainless and a binlid filter...struggles to get over 75-80.

my mate had same problem with his 106 and it was fixed because the tracking was way out (27ft drift over 1mile) but i had mine done a while ago.

could it be carbs need seting up properly or the fact im running 195s?

the engine has only done 46k and has full vxsh

I'd say carbs, 195's should be no problem (assuming you mean the tyre)

im confused. you says "carbs" which leads me to believe twin 40's yet you say you have the standard filter

when was the last time it had a service?

yea width wise 195/50/15s, it goes well upto about 50-60

its on standard pierberg carbs. 1.3 8v carbby.

not sure, i havent done one since i had it. i guess i should do that at some point

oh, i too assumed you was running twin 40's

whats it like in say 4th gear at around the same RPM it can't get speed up in 5th? does the torque drop off?

tyres shouldnt be an issue, someone (not me) has seen 105mph in my 1.2 4 speed on 185 wide tyres. it does sound more fuel/carb related. if its the pierburg 2e item, things to check are
1) auto choke isnt sticking and is opening up properly when warm
2) the second butterfly opens
3) its set up and fuelling properly

it could be one of, more than one of, or a host of other things limiting your top speed, if the timing has slipped (as has recently been found on another Nova) it may run to an extent, but just one tooth out can do stange things

yea pretty much, will get to 70 in 4th, bung it in 5th and sod all

and manuel choke :P

what gearbox is it?

erm, whatever 5spd was bolted to a 1.3 gl...im not too good with small block boxes

Asa-James

ok, does it rev cleanly in the rest of the gears, pull well in 1st and second?

Bubba
28-01-10, 11:52 PM
yea it pulls fine in 1st 2nd 3rd and most of 4th

think ill give it a service, plugs leads etc and try that first. not sure how to check timing n all that

Asa-James

has it always done this or is it a recent thing?

burgo

ok well for a start you only have one carb!!!!

secondly if you dont know when it last had a service it could be literally anything. so unfortunetly it could wind up expensive but you will want a full proper service as the first thing. then you need to get you timing set up properly and make sure the dizzy is functioning properly

hi the same happend to me. i had a 1.2 4 speed wood hit 110 at a push.then i put a 1.4 sri with a pearburg 2e3 carb and 4-2-1 manafoled and k&n.it ran mint for a day then i try starting it one morning and it was been a bich.then for the next week or so it started fine and ran mint in 1 2 3 then you hit 4th and it just wood not pull so i seviced it. this never made it any better then i took a look at the timeing and it had jumped a tooth. so timed it up and then it ran mint and diden't hit 80 any more it got 120+ :thumb:

I saw on the clocks of my 1.2 4 speed spi... 116mph... obviously i was only going 70:)

My 1ltr keeps up with motorway traffic, you should give it a service just to rule out the obvious then as said the timing as well

how do you do a timing check then?

Take the timing belt cover off, then get a ratchet on the bottom pulley and take the spark plug out of cylinder one. Put a clean screwdriver into cylinder one and slowly turn the engine over by hand until the piston in cylinder one is at its highest point. The timing mark cambelt pulley should now line up with the timing mark on the casing. If its out, turn the engine over 360 degrees and see if it lines up then. If it doesnt line up either time then its out- you then need to take the bottom pulley off, loosen the water pump, remove the belt and refit it correctly.
