Gear Box whine

Ive got a 1.2 carb j plate.

When i change down a gear in slowing traffic or going up a hill, as i come off the clutch i get a really loud whining noise.

Is this the whole gearbox or clutch/flywheel?

If its a gearbox i need. What am i likely to have, and what other cars can i get it off?

dry clutch release bearing is my bet

but as jimbo says check gearbox oil as could also be the diff

usually if its the release bearing you would hear it sat stationary in neutral if you press the clutch and release it.

Aye my Nova started to whine, I put some oil in it & it leaked from then on, proving it was dry.... I'd expect it to be the thrust bearing though, from what you say.
