My ps3 has suddenly stopped working properly. It wont play blu ray, dvds and it crashes on games? Has anyone had this problem and what did you do?

This happened to a friends ps3,
Blue ray lazer lense (thingy) is know for going on these 'apparently'
he rung up sony, and even though his warranty was expired
they gave him a brand spankers new one :confused:
