Hi
I want to spray my bumpers white to match the car but I was told by a prof sprayer that the standard nova (G Reg 1.0) bumpers are too textured and I need SR smoothe ones. Is it possible to get a deep front bumper from scrappy, eg MK 1 SR, and spray that and original Rear bumper without them flaking later?. Don't want to customise too much, just want it to look like a Nova Club/Swing in White. Thanx :?

PS How do I remove old sticky stripes from bodywork? :?:

sticky strips (if you mean the bump strips on the side of the car) can be removed by gently heating with hair dryer or heat gun (gently!!!). Or hot - not boiling water.

As for bumpers, you can sand smooth the texture using an orbital sander with 120-240 wet n dry, it does however go slightly furry and takes some work, then once sanded you can use plastic primer - build up in thin layers allowing time to dry between each. This will help with stopping it crack and flake. Fluffy bits of plastic will show through - dont worry.
Then build up with filler primer (yellow spray on stuff- dont spray on too thick - build up layers and allow time to dry between coats.

Then when dry (48 hours later) gently sand the remaining fury areas (the paint hardens the fluffy plastic bits that come through the filler primer). I did this on my SRi bumpers when colour coding in red. use 600 - 800 wet n dry (dry) when doing this and be gentle.

It took me a week to flat mune right back

Then prime with white plastic primer again and after dried (48 hours), smooth back with 1000 wet n dry by hand (dry), tacjk cloth off and degrease, paint white with cans or spray gun. White is the easiest colour to spray.

To protect from stone chips, allow to fully dry (a week in warm environment), smooth back using wet 1000 wet n dry (wet) and when dry, tack cloth off, dregrease and lacquer. This will bring out excellent shine.

Allow to harden over a week, put back on car!

I did mine in 2 pak last July exactly as above and to date have been bumped by several people and the paints still on there like new (didnt need lacquer with 2 pak - rock solid!)

If you want to save yourself time, you can buy smoothed bumpers from Vauxhall - be prepared to bay upwards of ?160 though! They come pre- primed.

You can also buyt replica ones for a bit less.

It all depends on how much you want to work/pay out.

Also - I've seen a silk violet metalic SRi with rough textured bumpers, not flatted back and the paint sprayed onto it (plastic primed 1st), then lacquered and it was totally smoothed (lacquer was added, dried off, flatted back and more lacquer added to build up flat layer). It looked mint and kind of glinted! So it is possible.

Thanx for info but I have to use car almost every day so need to do it in a weekend, plus I have no garage/cover to spray and leave bumpers off the car and money is tight!

The sticky stripes aren't plastic strips. At some point the whole car has had a respray and the sprayer most have stuck this on like sellotape coloured striping, I want the same type but silver and this one is black. Wide stripe at the top then thinner one under it and so on...about four in a row, have seen it on a roll in halfords etc.. want to remove.
Also anyone know how side skirts ( these are the things that cover the bottom of the sills?) are attached?. Like, is it possible to scrounge some from scrappy or are they stuck on with double sided foam tape? I have no idea!. Just the standard type in between the front and back wheel arch, not going over them, just straight pieces.
Thanx
Linda

nh - she means go faster stripes along the whole car - in a row - basically get a heat gun on low heat and waft it gently about 6" from car - and I mean gently - you dont want to bubble paint - the strip will peel away - or if you are careful you can pick at a corner and gently peel, wafting with a hot hairdryer.

Side skirts you can get on ebay or scrappy. I got a set for ?40 the other week. Theyre held on by clips which are set equally along the sill. They come in 2 sections the long bit and the bit that goes up the rear arch. This bit slots into the front bit and is secured by 2 push studs at the edge and double sided tape on the edge along with a clip at the bottom. The hole thing is bolted to the underside of the car - usually with push studs.

Easyish to fit - you can get th clips from vauxhall about 20p each. You'll need 18 I think. Oh and theyre held on with pot rivets which means drilling the side of yer car and then rust proofing the hole. You also need to line them up accurately although you can have a bit of play either side.

I have pics if you want them when I fitted mine...
