View Full Version : Charger or Challenger
After watching Top Gear earlier on Dave, Hammond was on it with his Charger R/T 440 - which he sold after about 2 months ownership iirc as he wasn't man enough for it lol - but he was having an argument with Clarkson about which was better, the Challenger or Charger. Came down to Bullitt vs Vanishing Point.
So wondered what people here thought
1968 Dodge Charger, and the film Bullitt

or 1970 Dodge Challenger, and the film Vanishing Point

Challenger. Too much DoH sh!t surrounds Chargers lol.
I'd happily have the 'Bumblebee' Challenger TBH.

The charger from Bullitt was fantastic so that's the one for me.
Where's the Burgo option :p
That one has so much torque the chassis twisted coming off the line at Palmdale! lolz

much prefer this:

but i voted challenger.......vanishing point & deathproof had an effect on me, but the hyped bullitt chase with the amazing self fitting hubcaps & repeated bits & clunky editting was disappointing after all the years of waiting to see it...
Charger, the front ends look cleaner and better.

nope, it is shoite ever since gonad in 60 seconds.... Nicholas Cage couldn't drive a hard bargain...... i think it should be reviled for the fact that every american bloke with a small cock & a midlife crisis has bought a replica.......
For the last shonking time

She's a '73 Mach 1 Mustang, not the gayhat chavtastic GT500.
Anyway, the GT350 looks so much better than the bodykitted monstrousity of the GT500
AND this is about bullitt vs vanishing point :p

Charger all the way.
Bullit car chase is an amazing soundtrack. Shame the film is pants.
Charger, I have loads of books about old cars and apparently the charger has enough power to spin the wheels in every gear, since I read that I always wanted a Charger, plus its sexy as **** and looks ORSUM! with a supercharger sticking out the bonnet.
Both the Charger and Challenger were available with pretty much the same engines
and with the Challenger being the lighter of the two.... :p
[edit] Just realised Hammond was talking out his **** on top gear - he said the charger lived for just 8 years, actually it was 12 and a further 4 years when brought back in the 80s. The Challenger only ran for 4 years in the 70s, then came back for 5 in the early 80s.. so is technically the rarer of the two as well :p
Neither! Utter ****e. I can't stand most of that American rubbish.

charger easily, my favourite car bar far, my dream car, come on general lee, bullit, crazy larry dirty mary, f&f, death proof, allthough death proof has both. definatley charger 440 r/t 69. A little fact for bulit is, that the charger didn't need it's suspension changing once, where as the mustang had a few sets changed.
Also i heard that hammond was going for an eleanor
in the olden days, before the internet, there were lots of ways of publicising a movie, and spreading legends was one of them..... the fact that the mustang needed more suspension components was probably due to the fact that it was the 'Hero' car, and thus had to have much more screen time & thus a lot more takes, whereas the chargers actually play a much lesser role in the chase, and it really didn't matter about more than one take as Steve McQueen wasn't in one
Nope, both cars underwent reinforcing for the shoot - the rumour about the Dodge suspension not needing modification isn't true
To shore up the front, [Max] Balchowsky revised the torsion bars, beefed up the control arms and added heavy duty shocks
...
"I got some special rear springs, what you call a high spring rate, a flat without any arch in it, and using that spring the car would stay low... We had to weld reinforcements under the arms and stuff on the Dodge."
However, the engine on the Charger was standard (which is probably where the non-modified legend came from). The Mustang required much more modification, including engine mods. Probably as a '68 Charger 440 would stampede all over a '68 Mustang GT 390 lol.
you know a lot about 'mercan muscle cars....
Won't rest til I have one
Already struck a deal with Hayley that she maintains/pays (cough) for the house, I'll look after the cars. Didn't tell her that deal involved me having a £40k GTX on the driveway though :d

Challenger for me, more aggressive. And Audioslave used vanishing point movie samples in 'Show me how to live'. Although ive never seen either film, which is odd for me lol
go buy a '32 roadster running a 454 ls6 rat chevy motor and a gmc 6-71 blower. thats american muscle.
Seeing as we are now adding wtf we fancy in here...

Everything American muscle is about :d Big, beefy and make you sh*t your pants

It gets no better IMO. Stupid money though!
A guy I know through the Nissan scene told me a couple of years ago of one sitting rusting on someones driveway as he imported it and it was a little more crusty than he was expecting. So rather than repair/sell on he is just letting it slowly be reclaimed by the earth!:eek:
If it's a GT-R he is especially mad! I'd love to know where it is. Been told he won't part with it though. :wtf:
I'd be quite happy with this tbh

Affordable :)
I set my sights too high. How much is one now? I assume it's a Firenza?
again with the adding what ever the feck we want: :D but voted for the challanger
http://bfarber.com/screens/%5B3049%5Dcorvette___1970_stingray.jpg
Corvette's never really took me for some reason, Firenzas look SO much better without the copycat Daytona/Superbird nose, and whilst we're on the subject of copycats thats why I could never really like 70's Jap stuff. Nice, quite like a TA22 Celica, but it'll never be proper muscle
Affordable :)

Ja its a Firenza, I ****ing love them me, and Chevettes, I'm contemplating selling my Nova and buying my mates Chevette and the V6 he wants to put in it, its sound underneath, only needs a front panel, possibly wings, bonnet which he has, and the rear arches sorted out.
Challenger!!!!
or a Nova :)

if it needs a front panel, then make it into a kadett c replica...
I never got the droop snoot firenza tbh..
the viva hc was not that good a car, as a base. they were really heavy & the 2.3 slant 4 is a massive thing... I know the later lotus version of it was much better, but the std 8v one was not

I only said about the changing of the suspension not the modifications. I got my info from a general lee owner. My old brother in law, for another fact fith gear used his car for the general lee vs starsky and hutch gran torino, thus the reason why the charger is my dream car, because since the day i went in it i have been pining for one, i always say if i ever won the lottery a general lee would be the first thing i brought.
I would love to get a shell and build one as the ultimate project.
I have to say tho the double cluthching in bulit from Mr Mcqueen is legendary. Thats all i ever want to watch that film for.

They used to just be a dodgy copy of other things but over the last couple of decades they have evolved into their own style IMO. I also consider them the best cars around, again IMO.
is ther a picture of burgo posing on both these cars? i need some help haha
