View Full Version : New Project - 1984 Nova Hatch!!

Well I stumbled accross this by accident and it seemed rude not to buy it, its a totally standard 1984 Nova 1.2 hatch.

77k miles genuine with full service history - every bill, mot etc etc from new pretty much.

Main jobs are to MOT - wont want much and sort some little jobs like fuel gauge and temp gauge!!

Interior as new - just needs a hoover and seats a quick clean. Lovely brown dashboard - even better made the 50 mile drive home with ease!!

Got new badges for tailgate - on the lookout for bumper badge now!!

Very little rust - in my experience and over 30 Novas now the early ones are far better protected and last longer than mk2s!!

To be honest I am in two minds:

1. Totally Standard
2. Early SR replica with snowplough and a 1300 engine etc but finding parts may prove difficult

Has a few scabs round rear arch but nothing worse - its very very clean hence me buying it when I have too many projects already lol!!

Favouring that myself as I cant leave anything standard for long!

Its finding the bits that will be the hard work!!

Snowplough
Seats
etc etc

It may end up just getting all my spares put on it which yet which come from later cars mostly (still mk1)

Connor
10-01-10, 04:40 PM
put bits on while you go...
like you could fit the seats when ever etc

but definitely go for an early sr rep
i would if i found an early enough shell :(

Simon - really interested and to be honest whether I go for SR rep really depends on whether I can find a snowplough!!! Please can you PM me details of what you have etc and we can take it from there?

I may have a set of mk1 astra gte seats on standby if I cant source standard SR checked trim!

1300 on twin 40s in my hope!

4. Side rubbing strips

I have located;

Early SR tailgate in my garage
Sport clocks
SR steering wheel
1300 engine (I think!)
Suspension

And need a cambelt cover!

Sadly not. A cr++y Aiwa cassette stereo was fitted with speakers and a stupid aerial for the sum of £300 in 2003. I have the receipt!! The £300 included wiring installation !

kent14sr
11-01-10, 08:44 PM
Defo - I am looking hard for brown check SR trim but may have to go with later stuff which would be a shame! Its all about cost though - someone offered bronze glass and snowplough for £250 which would destroy the budget! So Ill keep on looking!!

Same interior as the Sport aye ? That's what I'm putting in my Mk1 :)

floydy13
11-01-10, 08:53 PM
jeeesssuuss, how much? i sold the whole interior from a silver 84 SR all in brown for £120. and he had everything! if you can get hold of bigs on here he might have the no. for the guy. he was called ck on here, he was restoring a sport. lives in plymouth, last i remember he was selling lots of nova bits on the bay, but i still think he has all the interior still, maybe worth a try!?

last brown check interior fetched 270 quid on eBay, pretty rare now.

Snowplough's in good nick fetch good money as well.

There was a few gray check interior floating about at the end of last year, ALOT cheaper as well

kent14sr
11-01-10, 09:39 PM
I have the chance of a gray one but heavy wear on drivers bolster and rear seat base missing!

kent14sr
12-01-10, 04:41 PM
Well it may be the car loses its brown bits if the search for an interior proves fruitless as it seems.

I can source a later gray trim and already have mint carpet (gray) etc so would only need a gray dash shell to complete

I also have mk1 later bumpers and grilles

Its going to be MOT'd as standard in next week or so and after that I will make a decision. Much though I would love an early early SR rep I dont have endless sums of money to make it happen as my other SR is my main project.

Alternatively I may sell it as standard and buy a slightly later car in similar condition to use my existing SR stuff on - that would gut me but if the early parts are not there/extremely dear the project is pointless!

kent14sr
12-01-10, 08:30 PM
It may well be on now;

Just paid for a snowplough
And rubbing strips!

Think interior will go gray though!

it is a shame to change such an early unusual nova, would be more sense to use a later and better equiped car to make into an sr and leave this one original?

daverobson
13-01-10, 08:21 PM
nice =) plans sound good but i do agree with marc69 ^, a car of this age and condition should be left original, as finding one in a few years will be even harder. some one might be able to px a later one with you?

Be a shame to rip out all the brown stuff, kind of would ruin the identity of the car IMO.

Not particularly unoriginal as the C reg SRs had gray burberry and a snowplough!

Its obviously now not original but driving a 1.2 Base isnt really my thing and it would never have been concourse.

However, I will have an early SR rep that compliments my G reg quite nicely and one I know is solid.

Nice one mate, sr rep's are cool. Basically what ive gone for with mine, im going to do the lower half of the car in stone chip I think then paint it grey to give it a matt finish.

Thats exactly what I am doing. The matt black is Simonez stoneguard. Tested out the finish with hurricane gray over and its good - I am happy with it. Same as my SR if you remember.

Think it may go 2.0 8v yet as well!

Well work on the b reg has been slow as got the other half another Nova. Its a genuine 48k Luxe and one of last carb'd 1.2's. Very clean as you would expect - bought from a family who used it as a second car and even got the Network Q details from when they bought it in 1992. Not concourse as its a used car - but not seen many this clean!!

Work so far - new brake disks/pads and recon calipers. CV boot and hazard switch replaced. MOT this week once headlight arrives.

Staying standard and wont keep it too long - just till my Insignia arrives in next month or so. Will listen to sensible offers when time comes!

Nice find mate, was it a Merit 1.2 or a base? Sounds like the same model as mine: brown dash, blanking plates in many places etc. Looks like you've been steadily getting work done.

Mine had the snowplough from factory AFAIK. Take a look at the project in my sig.

I actually painted my brown dash black is it had faded due to sitting in the sun for a few years. I agree about them being better protected then the MK2's. My one only has rust on the rear arches and lower door bottoms. The rest of the car and moreso the very important areas are mint.

There are loads of photos of the SR in the project thread for it and a few in the meet thread for south east;

The B reg was a base when I got it. Needed new front brakes so got 16v ones now and a bit of tlc generally.

Heres a few of my cars;

Firstly at the recent meet (mine is G reg SR)

http://i249.photobucket.com/albums/gg240/cdburley/31012010426.jpg

The B reg just needs menial jobs for MOT but everything else seems to take priority and I dont need to use it so it can stay in garage for a bit longer! I can then decide what engine goes in!

Ones below are just prior to MOT in december before bumper stripe and rubbing strips reattached

Jobs to do still;

Source and fit 13sb engine
Sort minor wiring glitches
MOT

Although its not a carbon copy early SR replica - its done within a tight budget and looks how I hoped so far. Although would have been great to get brown check interior etc prices dictate this would have gone way beyond budget so gray burberry was a fitting subsitute!

Yes a really good 1200 - just rebuilt it with new sump gasket, water pump and gen cambelt, head gasket, oil pressure switch etc. Really clean but its not a 1300 lol Its forsale - £50 for engine and box - spent more than that redoing it but Im really happy with how car looks now and know the 1300 engine well so may as well do the full job!
