Well today was,is the first time in 3 1/2 years of owning the passat that something has actually failed on it..

Just left work and lost my power steering, i know what it was straight away, the aux drive belt had snapped, it's been on it's way out for a while, so much so i bought a new one and a tensioner, the idea was to fit them, but as with most things i kept putting it off! (lol bought them 9 months ago)
And if it had gone in the summer i would of been proper buggered, as the belt drives EVERYTHING! alt/water pump/power steering/fan.

No power steering was fun, but the snow helped lol and if it was not so cold it would of over heated as the coolant was not being pumped round.

So it's booked in in the morning at 8.30am, lets hope it's done asap, and not too steeply either.

lol lazyness fail

Surly thats a laziness win? As the car won through my laziness, and i lost? lol

And Mazz, i dare say nothing will change, im just lazy like that, i always put things off unless i have to do them.

Right Ive been at the garage most the day, and this car might be getting scrapped! As the viscous fan pulley is stuck on tight, without it coming off then the belts/tensioner can not be replaced, rendering the car useless!

Im very very pissed off and cold, so not happy.

can't you just feed the belt round the fan?????

Have they dropped the front end foward

the viscuss fan is normally very tight, but you need two spanners on it to undo it :)

Ive never failed to do one either so it should come undone :thumb:

Is it the model with it bolted through from behind with 8mm allen key?

Yes john, and it's stuck on tight, they have been on it all day..

Mowgli, the belt tensioner has annihilated it self, so has to be changed, and all the front end has been taken off, I'll put a pic up.

Here is the viscous fan (with all the fins on it) And the belt adjuster that cant be got from behind it without the fan pulley coming off first..

Sorry for poor pics, there from my phone.

There's a special tool to counterhold the viscous fan, whist undoing the allen key scott. I've never, ever had any trouble with any of the 3b passats i've done at work.

lol yeah but it's my luck that this fan bolt is stuck 100% tightly on!

IF it dont come off the cars utter useless! im dreading it, can you imagine one stupid bolt making the car scrap..

That viscous fan assembly runs through the engine casting.

This is what i was saying too! lol

Im thinking best keep it bit longer now though, as im getting fan/cam belts done..

But will be looking to fook it off within 6 months.

Think I'll stick to vaux this time, as VW over engineer things...
Makes them good, but a **** to fix.
