well the time had come for my little project to finally go to the garage for a few minor things, after having months of trouble getting it all legal it was going to go to the garage,BUT as usual with this car there was something wrong and wouldn't start,so after a poke around i felt the rad pipe was solid and the pipe from my header tank frozen,so the bloke i bourght the car from never put anti-freeze in the car i have got to take the pipes off and let it defrost naturally to release any pressure, but how is it going to defrost with the weather comming. its on a drive not even in a garage where i can put a little heater, has anyone ever had this problem if so what did you do

probably gonna want a headgasket and possibly new rad aswell, ive had the same problem before

can you not take all the frozen waterpipes and the rad completly off and put them somewhere warm to thaw out ?

What engine is it?

If its a 16v, then you will probably have bent valves etc - where the belt would have slipped over the seized water pump...

it is 16v only tried turning it over about 3 times didnt make any funny or unusall noises or anything so im hoping im lucky and not done any damage, just got to let it defrost i think and hope for the best. what a pain in the ****

the gaffer had no anti-freeze in his toyota lucida he had started it then it began to make a clunking noise!?!?!?
now when he starts it,...it continues to make this noise, what do you think this could be?
the cooloant pipes were solid with ice and the coolant bottle too!

As above - the water pump would have seized (assuming that the drive belt runs the pump) meaning the belt would have chewed it self and slipped possibly - although I have no idea whats in that Jap thing - could even be chain driven?

Anyway - what happened when you tried to turn it over?

Yip, as a result of theiving cnuts, my rad has blew. Car was off the road for winter for a few things when they stole it. it had no anti-freeze.

At least i have it back, although when it starts (if it does) there is a serious lack of power. this is what happens when the head is gone?? Dont know much about engines lol

My nova water system have frozen solid aswell, i took all pipes off and let them melt away, wait for waterpump/rad to defrost first. fill it up again and finger crossed for the best :)

Estima Lucida has a chain on the petrol or belt on the derv iirc.

As for defrosting, the V6 was iced solid after being left in Lee's barn for a few months as the previous owners hadn't put any antifreeze in. We just dumped some in with a bit of warm water and it gradually seeped through and melted the ice up. Did change the water pump and timing belts as part of the fitment though.

Had this problem on my old escort didnt have anti freeze in it for some reason :S

Got a bowl of hot water chucked it other the all the pipes while crushin the ice though the pipe with my hand seemed to do the job. (i didnt attempt to crank the engine tho)

(that engine seemed indestuctable) (sp) went from ipswich to liverpool with no water :o

A mate of mine did it on a 1.2 years ago

Slipped the cam belt and bent valves iirc

Then when he had it rebuilt found the head was cracked

before trying to start it up again, make sure it is timed correctly.

unless it was a 16v 1.2 then he didnt bend the valves from that ;)

we broke the cambelt on a mk4 escort with no antifreeze due to a frozen water pump lol

Water pipes froze on my 1.2 16v corsa recently because I only put water in after changing egr valve previously....... it started and drove fine but cooling system wouldn't work obviously so I turned round, went home and I poured loads hot water over the pipes and thermostat etc until they thawed out and it was fine. Then i added anti freeze.

Guess I got lucky.

If the head or block is cracked, does this show externally?

If not how would i check? The temp is through the roof but i was putting that down to water pissing out the rad??

any gen fellas?

Joe

well, if everything else is frozen up, then the system simply can't cope & boiling water will come out wherever it can....

the only way to tell if anything is cracked is to run the engine up with every pipe securely fixed & antifreeze in the system, and see if any water leaks out or it runs badly.

also check for core plugs that have been pushed out

it will display headgasket dead symptoms if any part is cracked internally

Engine itself was warm when I began to thaw the pipes

Just taken off pipes from engine and rad so gonna leave it for tonight alot of water drained out(on my foot) so now I'm frozen gonna try to flush it through tomorrow and put some antifreeze in. Fingers crossed
