View Full Version : price for a patio?? any gen?
Just had a bloke come round and measure up for a patio and wondered if anyone got a clue about pricing etc.
He has not given me the price yet just wanted rough idea,
Its about 50m2, he has got to lift old patio slabs, remove old brick gazebo type thing clear all rubbish and supply and lay indian sandstone slabs.
Any ideas?
I've seen similar patios quoted at 3000-7000! This being a bill for a small patio done at our current house and what a friend was quoted for theirs. Prices seem to vary massively.
I've always done it myself. It's fairly hard work but not rocket science - depends if you have the time.
No i am very rarely in the uk and when i am digging the patio is the last thing on my mind, and getting skips/ going to tip is even lower on my plans lol
Thanks for replaying will see what he says.
My old man had some landscaping done, a few walls built and then a sheeeet load of indian sandstone laid (this included removing the old patio/steps/walls etc) and it cost £10-12K lol
ben, those indian stone slabs are slippy, uneven & the pointing up always needs renewing. ok, they look good, for about 6 months......
me dads hasnt fared too badly, but then its rarely used.
agreed on slippy though, although positively safe compared to wood decking with a hint of damp/ice on it lol

if you can ask him to break the quote down into stages.
for example price on ripping up old stuff, and price for new lay..
see what he comes back with..
then you can sort of see where you money is going

13m2 per pack for indian stone, 4 packs @ £250/pack
3ton sand to lay on @ £40/ton
skip £80-100
labour 500? maybe
£2k-2.5k
Should be getting prices for around £50m2 if it was being done 'cash'.
Through a company considerably more.

Get 3 quotes and recomendations ! Mate of mine had one done and had to be rectified 3 times. He ended up sueing them in the small claims court.
Ben, you could always ask the 'local' resident bob the builder ;)
The guy i have asked is my in laws next door neighbour and known my wife all her life and is a good guy just wanted a rouh idea.
Sulphur, i priced up the indian sandstone on tinterweb and called local place and for 50m2 works out about £600!
And yeah have asked for a broken down pricelist.
it works out at around £70m2 round our part of the world..

i do this type of work as a sideline(weekend work/foreigner) with a ad in the local paper,in august this year i done to jobs with indian stone(one at just over 90m2 and the other at 35m2 and as you say a little pricey there is the natural paver's and there is also a molded type(made out of concrete, flat base with the same natural look finnish as the original indian stone!therefore a little cheaper m2 when ordering;))
they way i price my jobs is measure up what i need then order it from the local builder's yard in which the owner will then pay for, so that is then out of the way,i will then charge £80 a day for myself and £40 for my labourer of which i will collect when the job is finnshed and the owner is happy with.
i also give my home number(which they can happly pass on for me to claim more work) but also for them to phone me if there is any problem what so ever in the future(of which i will rectify on my own behalf). and luckily for me ive never been in that situation.only been back to do other bits of work in there yards such as garden walls etc.
EDIT,i also claim the use of the works minidigger for the cost of diesel in the van to pull it.
christ, you are way too cheap, even if its folding money!!!!!
we were doing work for that about 10 years ago
I was thinking that!
Most trades are £150 minnimum and labour's £75ish

I see it as extra money and more importantly tax free tbh.
All my tools are my own, and the minidigger as said is free, although the larger scale jobs the cost of the minidigger(£60 a day) is sometimes included9of which will be added to the end cost of labour..... unless it is a friend of a friend;)
i just think about the white/brown envolope at the end of the job, that spurs me on:d :)
edit ben if you were in my area id come sort your yard out no problem, but bristol is a little far away from me im affraid
also when you mention trades rates, you have to remember that you also pay for the boss and probaly his boss who sits there twiddling there thumbs while counting his pound notes ;)
No i got a lot of friends who are chipies, plasterers, general builders etc and all work on minnimum of £150 a day and a few who charge £250-350 a day.

80 a day? For a paver? A 'proper' paver? Way too farking cheap.
F*ck that, neither me nor anyone I know in the building/construction trade would get out of bed for that.

i guess you are not reading the story i wrote, and just the "£80" part of it
i work through word of mouth or a local phonecall through the paper of which i recieve enough phonecalls to probaly start up myself, but as i say it gets me out the house on a weekend earning "TAX FREE" money most jobs i do are only4-5 days(two week ends) at most.so if im happy the costumer's happy then who gives a fcuk tbh Lol
i get a good wage from my boss plus £160+ from "foreigner" work so im more than happy.i have a good portfolio of all my work for the customer to see and choose from.
i dont go out and kill myself 9am-3/4pm say and when i do work the longer hours its only to finnish off.
makes me laugh tbh, you say your on £150 a day? is that after tax or before?
because tbh i dont know many people who are on £150 a day after tax laying block paving/flagging!
the odd few i do know have there own set up and are the "boss" of there set up!.

No no, I read your post, twice actually. I understand the 'tax free' 'extra money' part, that's why we all do the weekend work. Still think you're way too cheap, but if you're happy to do it for that then fair play I guess.
I never mentioned my wage, I've no need to, I'm not making a comparison.:)
Guy just called and said £3500-4000 depending on exactly what i want, pretty much what i was thinking, certainly dont think its over the top.

I would of siad that sounds quite reasonable, i would of done it cheaper for you if you lived a little closer :thumb:
twisty, there's only one person winning with those rates, the customer........
ok, if you cost yourself at £80 the day, then you have the cost of your tools, which are still being worn out..
then your bosses minidigger & kit that he has supplied should be costed out at the going rate......
it might be easy money to you, but you are simply pricing too cheap
my charge out rate on general groundworks is £20+/hr, but I run an L200 truck full of kit in with that.
