View Full Version : 94' redtop. no spark. any ideas?
i started my car lastnight and it was running fine. came to start it today and it was running like a bag of shhhhh. checked the leads and number 2 and 3 are firing but ive got nothing on number 1 and 4. i am going to swop the coil pack over later and try that but just thought id ask and see if anyone has any ideas what it could be.
Is it a later coilpack engine then yeah?
If so the coilpack is fcuked
can only be:
Leads
Coilpack
Plugs
Amplifier
How did you check to see they werent firing?
left the engine running pulled number 1 lead off the plug and cudnt see or hear a spark. done the same to number 2, 3 an 4 but 2 and 3 were fine.
just tried a new coil pack. didnt work. still not firing number 1 or number 4.
ive put new leads on and they are in the right order. could it be the crank sensor? or would it be getting no spark at all if that had gone?

i was about to say a crank sensor dude
If it runs are you getting the ecu light? if so paperclip test should reveal if its cranksensor iirc

Have you tried a new set of plugs and the gaps correctly set? Also have you done a compression test and have you checked your timing belt incase it's jumped a tooth?
i haven't got an ecu light. not even when i go to start my car. i dont think its wired in.

i might be wrong but if there is no spark coming through the leads it wouldn't matter about the plugs, timing and compression. **** plugs would just give a week spark or no spark at all into the cylinder, i dont know if compression would affect the spark from the coil and if the timing was out it would still send a spark through all 4 leads, just at the wrong time. number 1 and number 4 leads arn't getting any spark at all.
wire your ecu light in and flash it and come back and tell us. till then your pi$sing in the wind.

As sloth said wire in the light find the fault code then get back to us.
Trouble is - there arent any sensors that would cause it to run on 2...
Crank sensor either works or doesnt - when it doesnt there would be no spark or fuel at all...
Sounds mechanical....

Sounds mechanical.... That's the reason why I mentioned a compression test and possible cambelt slip, may even be the headgasket.
Wire up the ecu light as well and tell us what codes (if any) come up, if non come up then do the above and a sniffer test.
Is this my old car, as it does have a eml
if it's coilpack it could be 2 things. ECU or coilpack

was gonna sugest fuel related items - are you 100% sure of it not firing on certain cylinders?

yes im sure. i can see and hear the spark on number 2 and 3. looks like im going to have to try a new ecu. if that doesn't work i'll wire the ecu light in and do the mechanical tests.
could anyone tell me how i wire my eml light in on my digidash please.
just got back from working away for the last week and have sorted the car. in the end it was the ignition module. quick 2 second job and its running mint again. just thought id let everyone know incase someone else gets a similar problem. thanks for all the answers aswell.
