what spec is your engine? choice on cams very much depends on the state of tune.
are you using your AST1 with a vernier pulley?

its the 1400 sr its just got standard pulley it was running standard head but have just brought a Blydenstein big valve head twin choke weber and 4-1 branch manifold at a later date i wanna put twin 40s on it

sounds good, AST1 should be well suited to that spec. you wanna get a vernier on there ASAP, kinda defeats the point of having a hot cam without one

cheers ill try and get 1

note that even with an AST2 or even Piper BP300 cam fitted the vernier pulley NEVER MOVED!!!!! to get best power/torque spread.

get one if its cheap, but imho its not needed unless you are chasing minimal numbers for motorsport regs

if your going to the bother of building a decent engine, why would you not want to get the valve timing spot on? skim the head and the timing marks go out the window. find true top dead, set cam up and then take out the half tooth of slack with the vernier? makes sense rli.
most fords come standard with free wheeling pulleys on a taper for this very reason. are they wrong? should they just fit them on a keyway?

just kidney slot the std pulley if you really need to adjust the timing, far cheaper than a vernier and does the same job if needed..... but the engines I've seen them on in the 8v world just dont 'need' them moving even with an stupidly decked head. But never let theory get in the way of what actually happened.

btw I do agree on the theory but have also seen the practice.
