Hey Folks, this is my latest project. Picked this up from Vaughan about 2months ago. I wasnt planning on building straight away but seen as i broke my every day nova for spares, i thought i better do something with this.

Anyway, its an Orginal Nova Sport, needs a bit of welding but nothing too scary! seen alot worse, infact my road going mk2 nova was 10x worse than this before i welded it up.

Back in the day -

As i picked it up -

Plans are to weld shell, with new panels (2 arches, 2 sills, battery tray, front panel, rear panel, gravitex the underside then paint whole shell in the legendary Polar white! It will get the Decals fitted, hopefully a set of GMS side skirts, Compomotive alloys. Thats about it on the exterior, apart from looking uber mint and shiny!:thumb:

Engine will get fully re-built, i plan to send away to get extensive work done to it. hoping for about 120bhp or maybe even a touch more. we will wait and see.

Will be keeping the standard sport look for the interior, i was thinking about caging it and fitting buckets but think a sport deserves to look "original"..

It will get loads of nice shiny/fancy bits i.e Wilwood brakes, polybushed, Ashley exhaust system, braided brake/fuel lines etc..

I will post some pics of what i have got/done so far. not alot, but only really started taking an interest in it a couple of days ago..

Nice to see you've got the motivation to revive the poor little thing. Are you having to source the interior or did Vaughan sell you his?

I kept the Sport interior to use in my Mk1 :thumb:

greg1.4

no i am having to source it.

i think i am going to try find an early mk1 to use as a donor car.

then i can use the shell for another project in the future also..

Agreed! having original engine numbers would be alot better and considering Vaughan think of him self as being one of the big sport fans he should know how important it is!

Agreed! having original engine numbers would be alot better and considering Vaughan think of him self as being one of the big sport fans he should know how important it is!

I've got a tuned 1200 that gave 73bhp on a twin choke carb. I'll donate it free if it means the original engine can stay with the sport. Comes complete with the 5 speed. Ideal to make a 1400 (can't remember how you do that - maybe with 1300 pistons & rods??)

Might be able to get my mate to drop it off in Scotland as well (he travels from London to Scotland 3 or 4 times a year)

Hope this helps

shell is surprisingly clean! when vaughan text me to say it was "past it" i was expecting rotten spring hangers, front chassis legs etc etc.

luckily the only parts rotten on it are replaceable parts like front panel etc..i personally think the shell is "good"

should hopefully get rear panel finished in the next week..

vaughanmc
02-01-10, 06:07 PM
Don't forget about the outer sills, inner sills, back arches, inner arches, doors, wings

Then all the bits you'd need to source like headlining etc

Good start though mate :)

Nice to see someone with the skills giving the car the attention it deserves. I'm sure you'll have it back in top shape in no time :thumb:

grey.

they have been sitting in a garage for a few years now.

Novasport

Take them out of the packet and compare them, I ordered about 3 or 4 of one side as it kept coming blue/grey but in a packet part numbered up as the grey one!

This has always been a good shell. Yes its had a front on it a some point in the 80s but even back up until the late 90s it was on the original sills and rear arches etc. As stated replace the outer panels, tug the chassis rails out and its should tidy up nicely...

Good luck with the project. Seems strange seeing the first pic outside my parents house.

I have good pair of early doors here if your require some...

The original interior from it isnt that amazing anyway. Had some fag burns (No by me) back in 1998. The drivers bolster had worn and the rear seat tops faded from the sun.

Also forgot that a ferrel cat snuck into my unit at the time through a hole and bedded up on it for a few weeks. Wonder whether the fleas are still alive?lol

An opinion I've read quite a lot of - Who cares about the engine and interior and 40's being split from the car

Least I didn't scrap the full thing and that'd be another Sport gone forever!

Anyway don't want to full Greg's thread with a lot of replies to s*it comments - Fair play for restoring it mate :)

You've got no idea how glad I am to see this coming together and that you're getting the original engine back!

Just wish I had known in advance what Vaughan was really like and could've sold it to you in the first place! If you need carbs, airbox, gearbox and stickers give me a shout, have a spare set :)

Will let you know if I come across anything else you might need

That's abit harsh !!

Edd
10-01-10, 09:55 PM
Think he means he was expecting you to restore it mate not break it up.

How come you didn't do all this to it then? Don't look as bad as I first thought.

You would of had a genuine sport with a bit of work.

vaughanmc
10-01-10, 09:56 PM
I can't weld and it meant relying on someone else to weld it for me which isn't really a sound idea as it is a lot of work but if I could weld and had my own welder I'd maybe have had a bash at it

At the end of the day it's still going to live on - Could well have been crushed!

Edd
10-01-10, 10:02 PM
Ahh fair point, I can't weld either so I know what a pain it is getting someone esle to do it.

Couldn't you let Greg have some of the rare sport parts tho just to keep it all together ?

Or has he got sport interior etc?

vaughanmc
10-01-10, 10:03 PM
He's buying the engine from me for a good price

I'm keeping the interior for my Mk1 but if I do come to sell it he can have 1st dibs on it so it can go back with the Sport but I didn't see the point in me selling the interior I like and the 40's I've always wanted to buy more

Kinda pointless like...

stick weld the engine bay but do it from inside the wheel arches so it doesnt spoil the seems on the bay, that way its hidden and keeps the original look of the car

greg1.4
12-01-10, 09:28 PM
good thinking..

i love looking in the bonnet of a nova and seeing stitch welds but i wanted to try keep the sport bay looking original..

Matt
12-01-10, 09:33 PM
Why bother stitch welding if it's just gonna be the 1.3? The shell will be perfectly solid once you've finished with it and I'm sure it'll be able to handle the 1.3 POWER.

Progress looks good anyway fella!

greg1.4
12-01-10, 09:35 PM
it should take the 1.3 no problem.. was just thinking to add strenght and for handling?

it should take the 1.3 no problem.. was just thinking to add strenght and for handling?

i dont plan on building this car just to look good! i want it round some tracks etc!

Ahh, fair play if your gonna be giving it some stick around track. In that case strengthening the shell up a bit is a good idea. I like Novacabrio's idea of stitch welding from underneath to maintain an original looking bay.

erm, not got a date sorted for paint etc..although i have been speaking to a local bodyshop and they are getting back to me on how much it will be.

not wanting to rush things, just going to dodge away with it so i dont get sick of it unlike my other nova when i was building that!

i think the reason i got sick and pissed off with the last nova was because i was rushing to get it finished for my 17th birthday!

anyway, got a few more pics..

was kind of hoping to have it ready for billing but not looking good..

had a problem with getting rear arch repair panels..

ordered them on tuesday along with sills, sills arrived on wednesday but arches are on back order or something..

apparantly the arch's wont be available till march!!!

tried about 6 different places local to me and they all deal with hadrian panels and they all say the same!

i phoned vaughan last night to tell him and he gave me a phone number for a body panel place up his way, gave them a ring this morning and they say the same..

no rear arch repair panels or full qaurters.

i had eventually brought myself to spending a bit more and i was just going to put full qaurters on, but cant get them from hadrian either..

anybody got 2 arch repair panels or 2 full rear qaurters?

or know any other supplier that i could get them from?

cheers

Greg i mentioned this the other day in my MK1 thread, Beevers has none, told me Mid FEB for rear lips, and end of FEB for front wings etc, and every ware els is totally dry of them too...

I ordered some for it before Christmas, but then the guy at the body shop said he could do with another repair lip's to do the inner skin, we have had to pay a bit more for one off ebay, best get looking QUICK before there all gone on there too...

Best of luck with it dude.

although i have ordered arch repair panels i think i am going to fit full rear quarters. will make a better job and save alot of filling!

anyway, i spent last night and most of today preparing the engine bay!

its amazing what hours of elbow grease, rubbing down and a wire wheel does!

i think this looks really tidy imo!

eventually found myself some rear arch repair panels (after the struggle of trying to find some), when they arrived i went to fit but just as i was sitting them up against the car something made me think, no, dont do it!

so they were put to the side again and i went on the hunt for some full qaurter panels!

i did say i wanted to do this one "right"..

bottom corner of inner wing/sill repaired -

http://i549.photobucket.com/albums/ii398/Vauxuki/P2070160.jpg

you can see in this pic, the inner arch lip is all like new now and is somewhere decent for the new outer quarter to be plaeced onto..

http://i549.photobucket.com/albums/ii398/Vauxuki/P2070163.jpg

this pic is evern better i think, shows a mint inner arch lip and the bottom corner where it always rots on a nova inside the wheel arch tub after being welded..

so anyway, then it was time to get on with the outer panel -

Just read the whole thread great to see a nova sport being saved, as I owned one in my teens, dont mean to hijack thread;) but does anyone remember my old car C464 HKX.

Think it was in max power classifieds at the same time as this one?

Good luck with the rebuild hope you get it finished soon?

I wish mate, might have some at my mums back in Coventry? Owned it round about 1996/97, bought it from a motorsport dealer called Jason Lepley in mansfield, who used to advertise in motoring news/autotrader.

Was standard apart from koni suspension, ashley rally exhaust/4-2-1 manifold .

Wasnt there a nova sport register/picture gallery on this site at one time?

I have been working on it lately, just had no time to upload pics..

the welding is pretty much finished..

onto actual bodywork now (filler/primer/underseal)..

had stevie78 down looking at the sport last night, he seemed to be impressed. i was going to put his old 1650 (dans old track car engine) into the sport, but when he was down last night he told me to stick to the original sport engine.

I have now got the ORIGINAL engine to go with car!

Only thing i dont have now is the interior..

will get some pics up asap..

Thanks for the interest.

Very nice I have been keeping a quiet eye on this one.

I sound really picky here, but you not having the fixings all powdercoated?

Your going to have a lovely shiny white doorshut with an old looking door catch.

Key is in the detail and all that?

Edd

Cheers for comments, Paul it is just screwed in loosely, the backing plate had to be welded onto the quarter from the inside, i just had the catch screwed in so i dont loose them.

All things like that will be getting powdercoated or zinc coated (whatever it is)

right, got up this mornin and decided to crack on with sport..

couldnt think where to start so this was my first thing.. lol

http://i549.photobucket.com/albums/ii398/Vauxuki/DSC02223.jpg

after i actually thought about it seriously i put some gravitex on the inner wing just to see what the finish was going to be like. I am so happy with it, was worth spending hours taking them back to bare metal then re-applying underseal! what a finish! will look great with paint on!

put filler on the pillar -

http://i549.photobucket.com/albums/ii398/Vauxuki/DSC02209.jpg

after a bit of time it looked like this -

sill -

http://i549.photobucket.com/albums/ii398/Vauxuki/DSC02213.jpg

other sill -

http://i549.photobucket.com/albums/ii398/Vauxuki/DSC02221.jpg

other pillar, this had a small bubbly of rust on it (surface rust) so i ground back, treated and then prep'd..

http://i549.photobucket.com/albums/ii398/Vauxuki/DSC02220.jpg

with wing on, the sill looks good. lines up perfect -

http://i549.photobucket.com/albums/ii398/Vauxuki/DSC02224.jpg
