View Full Version : heated screen
ok this might be the most stupid question ever
but for a heated windscreen, does it have wires coming off it? and it so where do you wire them to?
and if it doesnt have wires. how the hell does it heat up lol

you fail lol
you mean the rear screen? or the front thats soon to be arriving??

Yes it has 2 wires, one to the a pillar as a earth, and one through a relay to +12v

if your refereing to a front one, it will have wires on each side, need to relays to run
and your too late as the GB is done
cheers guys, and yeh front
and GB sparkie?
and i have seen them on a site for 180 ish. not to bad IMO. but its only gonna get warmer now lol
Think he meant the group buy they were organising on here ?

correct GB is group buy
haha warmer, yeah right i bet feb march is just as bad as now!!!!
also by the time i drive the nova it could be next winter lol
oooooo yeh
nah like i said i have seen them on another site. where you can buy them one at a time lol

you can buy em one at a time from where we got ours from but we wanted the top tint so ours are special order:thumb:
Iirc the two that I have seen have four spade connectors on them, two at the top and the others at the bottom obviously two 12+ and two ground. I believe its to split the load or you'd have to feed it with an amp wiring kit which wouldn't be very subtle

I doubt it will be more than 10 amps fella, 2.0mm cable would be more than man enough:)
I'd like to believe that but why is it recommended you use two accesories relays then, when they are good to nearly thirty amps?

You sure about that? lol
Heated screens are something that usually pull a LOT of amps.

the window man told me 2 relay set up
Id use timed relays too so it switches off automatically.
And at a guess id say that the screen would pull 30-40A

A wiring diagram for timed relays would be great if anyone has one

ill speak to my lectricain see if he can knock one up
mine will be wired up regards to a timer, probs 5 mins on approx
thats not far out ampage wise adam

Thats the same as 5 kettles?
Or 2 electyric showers?
I seriously doubt a little creen pulls 30amps, look at the wire thickness, 40amps would melt the bugger!
You use relays. a, for the timing, b, to keep the heat out of the dash, and c, as you can use a tiny switch in the dash, no a hoofing big thing.
Mine will be wirer up via a timming relay to the cav rear screen button.

Yeah, thats the best way through a relay, and you cant forget to turn it off lol

why not just wire into the circuit of the rear screen?

will be pulling too much current fella!

as Benn said
im doing it that way aswellhttp://i271.photobucket.com/albums/jj128/sparkie1401/DSC00999.jpg
and yes too much current if used on same switch as rear window, windscreen man told me that slso

What about if you don't have a heated rear screen, do you reakon it would be ok then?

I KNOW that on some Fords with heated windscreens, they are run through TWO 30amp fuses.... (one per side of the screen)
I have no Haynes here but can someone have a look what fuse protects the rear window heater circuit? Id be very suprised if it was less than 30A!
Oh and Landrover heated screen kits come with a 70amp relay :) Ok, it aint a nova but that gives you some idea of the amount of power they use
:thumb:
I'll go with Ad on this...lol
Heated FW uses a LOT of power. I know this. I have one. My revs - on the V6 - drop when I turn it on.
Mine had two heated tracks on it, four wires coming off. I think we wired in two relays for each track, but from the same switch. Its a big light up one on the dash so I won't forget to turn it off lol
Yep they usually do have two circuits(one per half of the window)

then should be fine as it one switch for one window
but its a "ON/OFF" switch so u need to rememeber to turn her off:thumb:

Mine does that when the fans come on.
Heated screens do draw a LOT of amps. Fuse on the nova is 20 or 30 amp. Its not exactly manly on a nova.
cheers guys for the comments etc :)
p.s the rear screen is heated. right?
why is there no switch for that, or is it in the ignition or something?
pps. just remembered you pull out the heater blower switch for it.
lol^ glad you got there..
Too much festive beer maybe.
lol. another small hole filled in my brain, and aw06. i had NO festive beer :) i can enjoy my self with out it lol

Amps not Watts. We're talking about 12v not 240v here special Matt.
Each bank on a nova heated windscreen pulls around 7.5A. I wired mine up using 20A cable and 10A fuses and a relay for each side. Also, mk1 owners, you can wire the trigger of the relay up to position 3 on the fan switch. I did mine this way, the screen stays on when you turn the fan down though, so you have to turn the fan off to turn the screen off.

As said, 10 amps per side for the fuse is alot more realistic!
If the fuses total 20amps, you work on 1/3rd of that as your flc, (full load current)
easiest thing to do, is someone put an ohm meter accross a screen, and work it out!

I personally want to run the front heated screen off the rear heated screen switch, as space for extra buttons and swictehs is getting a bit tight now.
What would be the best way to do this and still make sure nothing catches fire? lol
IIRC the rear screen has a 30A fuse fitted.
lol they do pull a lot of power though , my XE nearly stalls when i click mine on lol
and seans burnt all the wires on his as it nearly overloaded

I assume on a front screen it has a lot more heater track elements too, meaning it'll need more power than the rear screen.....

We need someone who already has one fitted to measure the amps it uses. I wonder if it uses more amps than Apollo 13? lol
after reading thru this i can see wiring up my heated screen from the group buy is going to be harder than i first imagined :(:(:(.

Same here lol I think im just gonna have it with a seperate fuse maybe inline, if I can't be bothered to fit it to a blank in the fuse box, and have it on an LED toggle swtich in one of the blank spaces (like the MK1 fog light switch).
I might not bother with a timed relay as I've had the pleasure of driving a car with a timed heated screen and it pixxes me off. Stick it on, it demists, then all of a sudden mists up again when it turns off. I'm thinking WTF whilst driving? The realise it's turned off. PITA on long journeys.

That's actually a lot less then I'd expected. Think a simple LED toggle switch and proper fusing should be fine. Would it need any relays at all if fitting one straight and not wanting it timed?
