anyone know a good cheap and cheerful belt ?
im not after some expensive kent cams jobby, but dont want a cheap nasty one thats gonna snap either.

ive used one of those powergrip belts before, it was put under alot of tension and stretched some and was still allright after that. any idea how much they are/best place to get em ?

cheers :thumb:

All cambelts have to meet a certain standard of quality so you cant really get a crap one they're all tough. i think most motor-factors carry powergrip.

lol my audi v6 tdi snapped after 3000 mile dayco belt fitted, the v6 tdi motor puts a relevant amount of stress on the belt , dayco supply audi belts for all models as a genuine item except for the 2.5 tdi where they issue a dayco pump belt in the box with a continental cambelt,
so why gsf sold me a dayco belt and told me it was dealer spec i dont know and obviously audi are aware of the problem as they will not issue a dayco on that model,
all i know is i have a 2004 audi cabriolet sat with two heads to be taken off for some valves:cry:

I'll only really use Gates belts as they sell to Gm. SKF use gates belts too.

Gates are also OEM and used a lot on the evo's. They also make a kevlar belt for extra strength.

cosworh make some good belts as well.

Gates, supply GM. Think a 8v one anyway is about £20.

have to agree here, dont be going for the cheap option, buy a contitech kit or gates/powergrip kit, thats what i have always used and never had any trouble, some genuine belts are actually made by gates

yesterday i attacked the cav with a contitech kit as i only agree in fitting kits not belts,
clock was showing 122k
belt which came off had writing very very worn but could make out
said "gates powergrip then isuzu" imo it was original as the writing lasts 60000 to 70000 on them usually this was all worn off,

that to me says i was lucky to change it now and what a belt gates are for doing 122k

i wouldnt say the one belt done 122k, i have seen plenty of gates belts and genuine gm ones with no writing after 50-60k, it probaly had a belt change at one stage in its life

you should never ever exceed 40K on a belt.
i bought a dealer serviced omega with 65k on it & in the service book it said 80k belt change.. at 70k it stripped coming out the carpark at heathrow... gm paid a large sum towards repairing it...

agreed

however the belt will need doing on "X" milage or 4/5 years or which ever comes first

might have gone co of that?
s

my old man has just changed his belt, its 22k shy of what the service book says but the book also says "or 5 years" 5 years is up so cam kit service done

the rubber degrades over time, so whether its doing 12k a year or 12miles it still needs changing

exactly, some that 1.6hdi engine that ford and peogeot have say not to change the belt untill 120000kms, i wonder would they stand over it if it broke before that

Most ford engines are now due for replacement at 10 years or 100k miles. Personally I wouldn't trust a belt for that long!

As said many times before though, I think a gates belt kit is about the best really.
