View Full Version : Ebay Refund help required please.
OK, so I sold a Home Cinema Amplifier on Ebay.
Posted it via Parcelforce48 and it cost me nigh on £12 to post it.
Now, the item was working perfectly before I posted it, however upon reciept, the owner cannot get it to turn on.
As it happens, the buyer is local to my parents, that I happen to be visiting, so I arranged to go and see if I could get it to work. It didn't, so I took it from him and I am going to refund the buyer the cost of the Amplifier via paypal.
My question/advice required is;
Do I have to refund him the postage? (£15 charged)
Obviously if I do so, this puts me out of pocket.
Moral dilemma? Or is there a legal answer?
Can anybody help me please???
Ta in advance :)

technically the buyer paid the postage so you wont be out of pocket.
are you sure he didn't swap it for his broken one then complain about it?????
try to claim against parcelforce, they will have a £ per kg thing, so if it weas fairly heavy, then you might not be out of pocket.
I wouldnt refund the postage myself, if i was the buyer i would be glad of the refund of the price of the item and would accept the fact that the postage is a loss but at least you have offered a refund many wouldnt.

What he (brainsnova) said.
Or, as you went to check it over for him (how many eBayers would do this?? Not many i bet!) maybe just refund the cost of the amp and call it quits?
What does the buyer say? Is it past the 45 days yet? If it is do what you like as he cant put in a claim!
EDIT: just seen the other posts.
technically the buyer paid the postage so you wont be out of pocket.
Item sold for £36
Postage charge £15
Total - £51
I then pay postage of £12
My profit - £39
If I refund Item and postage (£51) , that leaves me £12 down.
So, the gist of the above link is I shouldn't pay for original postage and would pay for return postage only? (Which won't happen anyway cos I collected)
So if I only refund £36 I am not breaking the rules??

Really nice guy, I can't see him doing that, and it is definitely my amp I have collected.
It's not parcelforces fault.
i think you'll just have to bite the bullet on this one & give him the full refund..
As I said though Mowg's, puts me out of pocket.
£12 isn't alot, but it is the principle you know :)
I recently sold a pair of Ugg boots on Ebay and a few days later I received a very polite pm saying they suspected they were counterfeit which they were not, I had simply misplaced the receipt and the shop where I purchased them from had a strict returns policy, I said if they returned them to me I'd give a refund as I had located the receipt and knew I'd get a full refund myself. So the buyer paid for the carriage to and from them and I only returned the price the goods sold for as I didn't see why I should be out of pocket, they didn't complain or kick up a fuss

i still dont see how you lost £12 as on ebay you item sale value is your profit and the postage is the extra the buyer paid to recieve it. since you picked it up offer him a refund on the item only and see what he says.

Right, lets do some maths!
£36 (Item Price) +
£15 (Postage)
= £51 (Into my account)
- £12 (To post to him)
= £39 (Remaining in my account)
If i now refund him £51 (Item + Postage)
£39 (Account balance)
-£51 (Refund)
=-£12 Balance!!
So, I will be £12 out of pocket.
However, this is the question, do I refund his postage??
If he returned it to me via courier, I would have refunded him his postage cost, as then we would both be out of pocket. But as i have collected the item, do I need to refund him my postage costs?
Stoo,
I have been on both sides of this situation in the past...... I didnt recieve a refund on postage costs nor did I give one either and no questions were asked. It sounds like you have been fair by all accounts.
Nick.
Cheers Nick,
Exactly what I wanted to hear :)
Thanks

Do what you would like him to do to you. I wouldnt refund postage if it was me but whatever you think is fair then do it.

Kind of what i was getting at. Nick worded it better lol
You went out of your way to go and see him, check it over etc. IMO offering a refund for the amp (without P+P costs) isnt unreasonable.
Just refund the cost of the amp and be done with it. If he is a nice guy, as you say, he should be happy with that.

If i return an item i would expect to get the item refund only, if the postage was excessive i would then question it
I would put a claim in with parcel force, then if you got it give him the postage, its all the rage, all the kids are doing it!
yea everyone seems right. You only need to refund the item price. P&P is an additional expenditure not linked to the ebay auction as such. Its like listing fees etc.
If you refund £36 then im sure he wont complain. You didnt over charge for postage so i cant see any complaints.
Nice to hear about a nice ebayer!

dont refund the postage, i wouldnt.
and i disagree with your sums.
item sold, 36 pounds
postage paid 15
total 51.
then you use his 15 pounds to pay for the 12 pound postage so your 3 quid up + your 36 pounds. so IMO your 39 quid up.
thats why you dont refund him the postage, because he paid you to post it.

Didn't you read the part that says 'My Profit - £39?????'
I know this.
However, I would be £12 down if I refunded the postage!

You do not have to refund him the £15, so you can remain £3 in proffit.
However, item was sold privately and despite being thru auction it still 'sold as seen' so you dont need to refund him at all. But it would be nice of you to.
I beleive the term is 'caveat emptor '
