Here's a small update on the Nova's progess, i will update this thread as and when we work on the Nova
Yesterday started tidying the garage out and turning the Nova round to make life easier.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic102.jpg
Then i stripped the bumper and grill off so some plates could be welded in.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic103.jpg
Only 2 front plates got welded on as we were short on time
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic105.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic106.jpg
And then we offered my new engine into position
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic107.jpg
04-02-05, 05:55 PM
Todays little effort saw the biggest of the plates go on, as well as a good tidy out in the garage so now all the crap (F13 inc shafts, F20, 2.0 shafts, XE and 256mm brakes) that was infront of the Nova is now down the side, making it much easier to work on the car. Just a case of dropping the handbrake and pushing it forwards.
Pics added:
Front 2 stabliser bar plates welding in

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic110.jpg
Had to take the n/s light out as i had to grind away some metal so that the plate would fit nice

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/novaint2.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/novaint3.jpg
17-04-05, 07:45 PM
Bit of progress:
I managed to put a bucket seat in today, really pleased with it as i've never seen how they fix in before, so i was learning as i went along!
http://img92.echo.cx/img92/8007/p1010240small3wz.jpg
http://img150.echo.cx/img150/51/p1010241small9mp.jpg
Also Joe came over and whipped the brakes off the GTE
http://img92.echo.cx/img92/6127/p1010244small6gf9ri.jpg
Astra GTE 256mm's on the left and Nova GTE 236mm's:
http://img92.echo.cx/img92/8756/p1010243small3uf.jpg
http://img92.echo.cx/img92/7729/p1010242small5hw.jpg
We had to put the white wheels on the front as the 256's wouldn't fit with the standard Nova wheels, looks rarther sexy though:
http://img92.echo.cx/img92/6853/p1010246small2zg.jpg
Also as it was raining i had to put a plastic bag over the window as when the engine come out the windows were down, and can't be put up now - doh!
27-04-05, 12:04 PM
Just had a bit of a play:
Ripped out all the original seat beats and associcated bits, quite some weight in that lot!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Pic340Small.jpg
Then put one of my harness' in
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Pic343Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Pic339Small.jpg
And here's a shot from the back of the garage, showing all the crap that normally lives in the boot
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Pic337Small.jpg
13-05-05, 05:05 PM
Small update
Put 2 of my new Pentalines wheels on
Might look into getting them powder-coated white or black eventually:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Tigrawheel.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic375Small.jpg
Finished fitting the HH strengthening kit - well all the bits i want on for now. Theres 6 plates left over - 4 for mounting a sump guard and 2 that go at the back, anyway:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic379Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic378Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic376Small.jpg
Then I found small hole (1p size) behind the N/S strut - which I poked at for a bit and it became quite a lot bigger :)
Getting a plate made up to weld in so no problem there.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic381Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic382Small.jpg
21-05-05, 12:13 PM
Another update
ALL THE WELDING IS NOW FINISHED :)
The nice big hole behind the n/s strut is now gone!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic397Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic398Small.jpg
Also Malc did some stitch welding for me:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic396Small.jpg
And the clutch is now on too:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic390Small.jpg
Start of next week i will be seam sealing and painting the engine bay, nothing too fancy, just to cover up all the weld's etc ready for next friday, which will hopefully see the engine in :)
24-05-05, 09:59 AM
It won't be ready for a while yet, the next major stage is the wiring i think..
I've also the choice of 4 sets of wheels now lmao
From the top going clockwise:
16" Team Dynamics multi-spokes (ET38 :( )
15" Vauxhall Cavalier Motorsports
14" Standard GTE wheels
15" Vauxhall Tigra Pentalines
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic410Small.jpg
Also got a red OMP strut brace:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic411Small.jpg
And this is how it looks at the moment :(
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic412Small.jpg
25-05-05, 06:37 PM
Right we are all seam sealed and primered up now :)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic420Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic417Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic421Small.jpg
The seam sealer does look quite messy tbh, but i'm hopeing that the 'bling' will draw the eye from it :)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic419Small.jpg
26-05-05, 09:59 PM
All painted up now ready for tomorrow..
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic423Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic424Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic425Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic426Small.jpg
27-05-05, 05:32 PM
Well the engine was supposed to be going, but while building the cambelt and rollers up something wasn't quite right...
So we took the rocker cover off and took the cams out:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic427Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic429Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic428Small.jpg
Then the head came off:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic432Small.jpg
Then we saw this, fecking great
In total, 14 out of the 16 valves were bent, some more than others. And 7 broken guides..
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic431Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic430Small.jpg
Here 2 we manages to get out:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic433Small.jpg
So looks like i'm either going to have to get some new valves or i might buy a complete second hand head..
Tis just another set back, it will live again....
02-06-05, 10:05 PM
All is not lost, new valves and head bolts
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic450Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic451Small.jpg
18-07-05, 12:12 PM
My latest addition to the Nova, half roll cage:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic500Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/Pic501Small.jpg
I wasn't to sure on a cage, but this was cheap so why not! Needs a rub down and a coat of red paint and jobs-a-goodun :)
03-05-06, 05:16 PM
As part of my new found effort, i've done 2 valves todays, and i'll 1 tomorrow and 1 Friday...
Picture evidence:

chopped the old immobiliser out that was stopping it from starting off the key:

I must have cut out about 20 crimp connections - i hate those things with a passion!

I went for a road-trip to a friends in Nottingham and on the way back the gearbox wasn't very happy. I got to the end of my road then i couldn't get any gears! SO, pushed it across the junction and left it for a few minutes and then managed to just about get 1st and limp it about 200m into the garage.
We suspect it's bearing(s) on the input shaft, as when the clutch is out it makes a bloody awful grinding/spinning noise - its the other way around if the release bearing is dead...
So after taking it to bits, we found this:
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/PICT0069_Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/PICT0068_Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/PICT0065_Small.jpg
So the hunt is on for a complete F20, but preferably one with 19pinion & 65 crown (3.42 ratio) as i can just swop the gearsets then..
14-12-09, 12:03 PM
Gearbox is done now :) No pics as we were busy. Took just over 4 hours start to finish and we left the engine in!
New shiney gearbox
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/PICT0046_Small.jpg
Also put on my power-coated, strengthened & poly-bushed arms
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/PICT0057_Small.jpg
Tyre wall?
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/PICT0059_Sm.jpg
And the remains of the old box!
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/PICT0060_Small.jpg
Got a few bits to do before i can take it out again though, but nothing major..
14-12-09, 09:10 PM
It was a bit of struggle though and at one point i think we were using 3 jacks for various things :) But we got there..
Jobs let to do are:
Fill gearbox up with oil
Clean the thread on the O/S track rod end as its flatted a little
Put a split pin on the N/S driveshaft
And i think when we lowered the engine we caught a water pipe off the heater matrix with the inlet manifold, so gotta look at that.
Not much to do though..
16-12-09, 11:23 AM
Fill gearbox up with oil - done
Clean the thread on the O/S track rod end as its flatted a little - done
Put a split pin on the N/S driveshaft - done
Just got to drop it off the front 2 engines mounts now to get some room at the back so we can get to the split pipe..
And the gear linkage needs setting up to as its a bit awkward to get 2nd, and throw anti-freeze and jobs-a-goodun!
19-12-09, 09:13PM
Well this morning, I braved the almost sub-zero temperatures and dropped the engine off the front 2 mounts to give me a little more room to get to the heater matrix pipe so i can fix the leak.
With that sorted i crawled underneath to setup the gear linkage.
The new box is a gem! Gear change's are 10x better than were before..
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/PICT0058_Small.jpg
And here's a few pics i took a few days ago, its too cold outside to clean!

Well.....you live and learn! I bought the engine and didn't really have a clue what a looking for and get screwed over basically :)
Top stuff fella! Bout time you had a wip!
i have been waiting for this thread lol
Top work Mazz, have you any more plans with it
or is it at the stage you like it :thumb:
I'd just like to enjoy for now tbh! I know it only a XE, but i love it :) Puts a smile on my face everytime i drive it..theres still a few little bit that need sorting and loads of carbon to slap on it, but they can wait :D
Eventually i'd like some ITB's and diff, but i've got a mortgage now so it won't be for a while!
Found some pictures of the engine going in..

Very Chav tastic mate!
Had to laugh at leaving window open.
I did exactly same thing then when car was having lifted back in it sat outside in the rain for a month with bubble wrap for a window. What a muppet!!!
Never seen it, so will have to make effort maybe for Billing next year
Looks good, That welding looks good too :D

Looks well!
Some nice bling in the bay aswell!
Been waiting ages to see a wip!
Looks good dude, did you not weld around the turrets on down the bulk head?
Looked great at Billing.
It does look ace, but one question,
why was it converted to a mk2?
It was a mk2 when got it, but i think it was face-lifted because of a front end bump, as the slam panel weld is aweful! I've got most the bits to swop it back to a mk1 now, which is why i'm not bothered about the scratches on the bumper/wing etc
Hopefully it will look this (http://www.pngclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=133550) when its done, without the obligatory Speedlines!
Had to laugh at leaving window open.
I know :( Didn't think about them when we took the 1600 out :)

Thanks, and no we didn't, not sure why though!

its a true testament to stamina this, -2003ish when u kinda first started it..
i never thought that this facelifted gte would actually make the comeback - thought ude just get another, or ready-done one seeing as it was taking so long, the luck u was having..
it does just need a bit more gte-ing as its a genuine one..
when has it last worn side-skirts?
as said in mids thread, good to see it out n about
your putting it back to mk1????
I've got most the bits to swop it back to a mk1 now,

mmmm proper gte :thumb:
saying it that it does look sexy like that
either way it is
Not an update, just went for a drive (read: play in the snow!) and to use my Christmas pressie, a new camera..I really should have cleaned it first, but its too ruddy cold!

Yep, got the grille, front and rear bumpers, skirts & a bag of clips - just need the wings now...but that not going to be for a while yet.
Does look well!!
Sell me those wheels
I love them. but the problem is they are 7J and any spirited driving they scrub the arch :(
I really want some of these, but again, only available in 7J :(

16 or 15inch tho? You'll get a15x7 in there... Well if the et is right..
Benn-IIRC they are 7j 15" and have a high 30s offset......
Hence they do give rubbage problems.....
So probably not the best idea for my track car...
They are a nice wheel though.

mazz when are you going to convert to mk1 :thumb:
btw looks awesome in the snow
They are ET45 and 15" 7J
They only scrub on the O/S as the beam isn't quite central
Connar: not for a while, tbh i just want to drive it now it back on the road :)
Hmm, someone on mig was selling a set and said they were et38, thats what put me off.
Id get away with et45 as ive trimmed both my front and rear arches right back

No updates since last September, I feel ashamed!
In October we went to the NW rolling road at MiniSport, and came back happy :)

Then in November I did a trackday at Oulton Park, where i found i'd got some issues with the alternator catching on the chassis leg round left hand corners :(
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6VXONKxpJI
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/ALX_1699-2.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/ALX_0228-2.jpg
We then had to limp home as the alt. was completely fubared, swopping batteries off the Audi at the services! It then sat quietly in garage as Tina was 8 months pregnant, I didn't need he car and the weather was crap!
With the nicer weather here, I ventured into the garage, and attacked the Nova! Tried removing the alt. adjuster and snap, bolt sheared off
So, we drilled a small hole down the bolt thread, tapped in a torx socket and tried to remove it....nope, we broke torx off in there too - bugger!
After realising it was part of the inlet manifold, not the head, i swopped the inlet to one off a spare engine..and found this
Offending Torx and bolt
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/CIMG6050Medium.jpg
Over tightened much? (We bollocked it right up at Oulton to try and stop it moving)
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/CIMG6057Medium.jpg
And here's what was left of the alt and lower bracket! It really took a battering...
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/CIMG6055Medium.jpg
Spot the difference..
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/CIMG6058Medium.jpg
A few threads & questions later and it was suggested that i look for a smaller Kubota/Denso alt., quick trip the scappies later and I'd found one and promptly liberated it off a crappy Aixam 500 thing...
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/f_1113181_1.jpg
Compared to standard XE alt.
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/DSC_0116Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/DSC_0117Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/DSC_0118Small.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/DSC_0120Small.jpg
Another trip to a scrappy and i'd acquired a mk3 Astra 1600 alt. bracket, the same as the SBD one.
Tina's Dad made me a adjustable rose joint for the top mount
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/CIMG6047Medium.jpg
And trail fitted
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/mrmazz/Nova/CIMG6061Medium.jpg
And that's pretty much where we are now, the alt. seems fine now, and despite some enthusiastic driving it doesn't catch at all..

Epic alternator and bracket deathlol
What amp is the denso mazz?
Car looks well:thumb:
According to google its 40amp, seems fine tbh as it's not running much..
Its exactly the same afaik as the SBD alt-sm2 which they will sell you for £168, or as a complete kit £272

hello your nova looks good and have enjoyed your thread i must say am loving that picture of the 500 piece of ****e lol
Chris you've come a long way since i remember being at yours with the head off/bent valves! Orange wheels really suit it.
eek, I know, that really put a downer on the day finding 14 bent valves and 7 cracked guides! Same head still though :)
And tbh, the orange wheels were only for the trackday but they are growing on me, and they make people smile when i'm driving it :)
Really like the E30 splitters.
Car's looking good cheif.
aha, someone who knows what they are :)
From a distance, and in the dark...
