You didn't say whether it was a straight swap but assuming it is;

1. Remove all wires from engine and tie back (maybe label them so you know where they go back)
2. Drain cooling system and remove hoses from water pump and any others that are attached to engine.
3. Seperate engine from gearbox
4. Possibly undo front tie bar
5. Slacken engine mountings and engine will drop out underneath
6. Good idea to support engine with a trolley jack or similar and lower it down gradually.

This is only a simple outline and it is likely to take 2 hours or so to drop out the engine providing you have the right tools, and two hours to replace.

If you can get hold of a hoist, you can take it out from above. That's how I did mine, a one man job ( with a little help from Mr Haynes Manual ) Don't know whether you'll have to undo your bonnet though ( I just have to lift mine off )

yeah its a straight swap and i am replacing the gearbox at the same time, the gearbox is already on the new motor, so ya recon about 5 hours in and out?

jack car... remove wheels and tie bars etc... drop engine/box out.... lift new engine and box in.... it's 10 times easier than going through the top

so you drop the old engine out of the bottom and you lift the new engine through the top?
i am being really thick now

Old engine = downwards
New engine = upwards

You could also take out radiator to avoid damage, but this is unlikey to happen.

I'm not 100% but I think you can hire hoists, but these tend to get in the way underneath...

Get something nice 'n' comfy to lay on

drop engine out the bottom then put new engine under car and pull up with engine lift (or forklift, or 2 big blokes with a bit of 4"x2")

i did a 1.6i to 2.0 16v in 5 hours this way

1.7td ???

considering it took 4 big blokes and me and my mate to lift the engine into the trailer and even then it was a struggle so with the added weight will it be a problem

remove the 1.5 unit complete so you can compare the 1.7 to it before you try to fit it. I would prefer the take it out method cos the turbo bits could foul the front panel.
If you remove the front bumper, and insert two bars into the holes, 2 blokes can lift the car out of the way...
