Thrashing it or sensible driving ? would imagine something like 30mpg

Super sensible driving at constant speeds can get you upto 50mpg (ask Lynz when she went to the Alps)

The Vaux Cavalier manual lists the SEH as upto 40mpg at 56mph. Around town and normal driving will probably see you at around 35mpg.

If you drive it hard then go it'll be fairly lower. All depends if the engine is running spot on, if it's maintained as it should etc

Thrashing don't really help mate, maybe try driving normally and see if you mpg shoots up to the 30's. Otherwise, check air hoses for signs of splits like the airbox - inlet rubber elbow. Maybe fill up your tank and chuck in some fuel system / injector cleaner. Check spark plugs, they should be a nice light brown colour which means engine is running nice and fueling right. Try changing the fuel filter if you haven't done so in the last couple years. If it helps to improve mpg then you may come across the problem.

I don't ever recall my dads SEH making such bad mpg only when his air hose split which was around low 20mpg, but that also gave some signs of lower performance. Still worth checking.

On a run to billing and back last year I only managed about 30mpg with my 20seh

My dad's SEH regularly gets around 30mpg normal town driving and 36+ motorway driving.

I'd defintely do some checks as im sure 17mpg sounds a bit low. I drive a 2.1 8v, modded head on 45's and if not booting it all the time i get around 21mpg and on a long run this can go up to around 26ish.

yup my xe in bike carbs averages around 22-25 around town i belive you should see 30-35 if driven half and half i managed 180miles on £20motorway miles on my standard xe :thumb:

Its not so much about your use of the loud pedal, as it is the brakes. Take your foot off the throttle earlier before junctions etc and coast through where possible instead of screaming up, throwing the anchor out then speeding off again.

Well a gallon is about 4.5 litres and for a £20 you should get about 4, when petrol was a bit cheaper mine used to get 70 miles to £10

A torquey engine in a light car like a nova should get good mpg.
Driving down to portsmouth in my xe i saw about 41mpg (i sat in 5th gear at about 3000rpm for about 100mile)

Obviously keep booting it and that will probably halve

^ Exactly, probably why Lynz managed to hit the 50mpg mark in her SEH. Either change your driving style dude and see if that massively affects the mpg if it doesn't then check out what's been advised.

Well when I did billing in mine I was with my mate in his 1.2 nova and we were averaging 60-70mph most of the way and I still only got 30-35mpg. I always kept it well serviced so maybe mines just fooked.

Chuck some fuel injector cleaner in a full tank, always does the trick. Used it a few times when we noticed mpg drop a bit in my dads SEH. 35mpg is still good.

Yeah I chucked some in a while back, I just thought it seemed a bit low when lynz said her SEH did 50mpg.
