4 spd box has a long ratio which means less gear changes so more "go time"

5 spd box has better top end, but looses time in acceleration due to gear changes

Well I thought that the 1-4 Gear Ratios were exactly the same. the 5th gear just provided a lower ratio for Motorway driving etc.

So the basic difference would be in Final Drive

yah, 5th used to be and still is called OverDrive sometimes.

Off topic slightly. Is the F13 5 speed better than the F10 5 speed?
I know it has lower gear ratios. Will that mean it accelerates better? Or is just better suited to the more powerful engines?
But its the opposite cause the slower engines drive the higher ratio box.

the F13(SRi) and F10/5 (all other 5 spped novas including 1.3SR and some 1.4SR) have the same ratios (with 4th gear being 0.89:1 and 5th being 0.71:1)

1-4 are the same as 4 speed novas an 5 is a longer gear for motorway driving

the F13CR and F10CR (GTE/GSi and late SR boxes respectivley) have the same spread as a 4 speed box, but over 5 gears, so each gear is shorter, and driving in 5th is the same as driving in 4th on a 4 speed (with the exception of the gte which has a longer FD ratio to help with cruising a bit) - (5th is 0.89:1)

and for those still not with it.

in the above abbreviations CR = close ratio think FD = final drive.

Ive a 1.4 on a 4 speed box - infact the same box that was on my 1.2

i used to have a five speed f10 CR on my 1.4 SRT40, and the gear changes came really quickly.

ill let you know how i get on with my new F13 box..........

so youre saying my 4spd has the same top end as a 5 spd nova with the same engine and specs?

cool

im drivin 2 wales on saturday ( 164miles ) glad to know i wont be burnin a crap load of fuel uneccisaraly :)

i just looked in my nova book and it said that 5th gear ratio is .71

so that actually makes 5th worth while, its only on the 1.6 modles that 5th gear is .89

mine have allways been the same.... 80mph @ 4000rpm in top gear

1.6 gte f13/5cr has exactly the same top gear ratio as the 1.2 f10/4,
its your choice, but remember that the 5 speeder has a different gear linkage to the 4 speeder. (the difference is at the gearstick end)

linkage is the same on later cars

hmmm so the easiest way to make ya 1.6gte faster... is to get a 4spd box :) les gear changes... more accleration time... gr8 :)
