Stanley

Auto wouldnt really bother me. Never had RWD so wouldnt be missing anything.

Mechanicaly what are they like?

Ben

There ok, oil coolers are a pain in the buttocks but not too hard to fix, pretty reliable really, they take the high miles pretty well, front wishbones are dear as fook for them.

Is it a facelift one? I peronally like them more then the pre-facelift Omegas. They looked better. The top sepc models look real nice. They are very comfy too.

Stanley
17-12-09, 12:16 PM
Ermmm i dont know haha! ( reckon it will be pre at a 98 model)

Show me both and i'll tell ya!

Ben

Stanley

Seems ok to me! Ive experienced ghey Ecotecs before so know how limp wristed they can be at times.

Quite like the idea of pimping about in that TBH.

Theres a nice front and rear splitter and skirt kit on ebay too. . . .

first ones had a small face lift reference the Xenon headlamps

the mk2 if you like had clear rear lights as appossed to smoked, slight different switch gear on the dash and bonnet and grill was all in one

3.0V6 was rarer than the 2.5V6

not that different but the 3-0 is a stronger engine when they become high milers

a lot of car for little money

comfy as hell

Facelifted silver Elite manual saloon FTW.

biggest problem is they're either ex cop cars or auto. and auto takes the fun out of rwd

Being an ex-cop car's not a problem.

Uprated suspension, plus it'll be serviced/fixed whatever the cost.

Nice, should have the projector lenses in the headlights, plus a little rear boot spoiler. They look very nice like that :thumb:

Yup. That's the tidiest they come IMO. Last of the line one FTW. I wouldn't mind one at some point. Tidy runabout. :)

Agreed with CG. I've known a few people to have ex-traffic cars and not had any bother with them - no Omegas though. lol

I DONT RECALL ANY UPRATE DSTUFF ON COP CARS THOUGH

Sometimes have stiffer/raised suspension for tackling speedbumps and carrying a boot full of cones and hi-viz vests. lol

I like Omegas.

3.0 engine is good, put metal rocker covers on it though lol

ive had two loved them, i am on the look out for another one for smoking around in. didnt fancy the mv6, mainly because over here tax on anything over 3 litre is 1700 euro a year! 2 litre eco with a constant fan and weld her up there plenty a fun!
heres my old 2 reeter skidder. learned to drift in this!

What are these like to lower?

Look very similar to a Nova set up (i.e. Shockers bolt off like a Nova - unlike Cavalier which has hub built in too)

L14MNP
17-12-09, 02:12 PM
Must be childs play - it's a Vaux! lol

There's a schlammed Elite near me somewhere, or was. Too low FFS. lol

Alan, you should have binned the viscous fan in favour of an electric job. Free the horses! You lose the cool sound though. :( lol

Whats the norm for lowering these?

Would cav springs fit?

last of the line ftl tax on 2001 on cars is stupid pre 2001 ftw £190 a year still expensive but better than the 400 youd have to pay for the same car just a year newer

Get some -40mm Eibach's or something. Forget Cav springs, risk of reducing the ride quality as blue peg said.

I had a 3.0 elite for a while... nice enough.
Couldnt ever get the seat comfy despite a million way adjutables.
MPG was approx 27 on the 40mile commute to work (motorway and A roads). In town my worst was 5mpg lol.
Rocker gaskets go rather easily.
If the coil pack loses interest its a PITA job as the coilpack is under the bulkhead behind the engine.

other than that, fairly faultless for the abuse I gave it

17-12-09, 03:06 PM
ive heard they handle prety well, there supposed to be fairly well balanced on the front to rear weight for good handling. a v6 on the rear wheels sounds like a winner to me, like the first reply tho, its gotta have a manual box to have fun in it. a guy i know that knows a thing or 2 about these said the main problem on them is the prop shaft and diff assembly bit, apparently thats a weak point in the chain and its expensive to fix when it breaks. there a little on the heavy side too, so mpg wont be so good, but driven sensibly (when your not drifting it lol) it wont be too bad on the wallet.

Ben
17-12-09, 03:08 PM
nothing on the omegas is that expensive to fix as they are a scrap yard favorite, heavy, worthless and old.

I drove my mates chevette back from Liverpool, and I swear it handled like a dream, I had always wanted to drive a rwd car and when I got the chance, even though I missed my shift at work and got into trouble, it was imo worth every minute.

It will soon have an engine in it that RJ will approve of too.

L14MNP
17-12-09, 04:24 PM
IMO you need a RWD car and a sorted FWD car in your life. Having never had a 4WD, only driven them I can't really comment lol.

Plenty of room for a FWD car still if you ask me, I know people who will only run RWD now and say no going back etc. Bah.
FWD chuckability and the predicatbility of understeer has it's advantages. Easy to save.
If the back steps out on a tail happy RWD car it's a different kettle of fish.
Was in an abandoned housing estate earlier and nailed a swooping downhill right hander at about 20mph lol - then it swung around on me. V close to curb. Time to take off the Superlites. lol

Maybe if I had a 'proper' RWD car, not one setup to step out I may think differently. lol

old omega's are great fun. my bro in law had 3.0 v6 elite with manual box, very comfy and very fast for size of it. had 280k on the clock before it died and that was only because he didn't take care of it.

Dirtydog1
17-12-09, 05:01 PM
use the v6 for a nova! win! you need the 2.5 management etc tho!

Ernie
17-12-09, 05:17 PM
I use to have a 3ltr v6 Elite and loved every minute.
The auto is ok for playing on roundabout in the wet but just watch for the kick down mid drift lol.
The best bit was when in sports mode it would kick into topgear at 145 ish when you kept the toe in lol

lowering? cut the springs. i smoked around for 6 months with cut springs in mine no prob. just drilled a hole thru the spring platform and put a huge hose clip up through and around the last coil. i wouldnt be arsed spending money on an omega cos youd never get it back there worth nothing!

we love slammed omegas over here, grinder ftw! heres a few

Hi
"omegods"
are a solid bus....
things to watch...sensors, selector switch on gearbox oh and sometimes the gearbox ECU!!! electrics arent too bad...
as for the suspension just watch out as certain models have the self leveling on and can be too expensive to upgrade.
mum had the 2.5 and 3.0 estates
the 3.0 was much better on fuel!

Nope, the 3.0's all fall into the £190 odd rate as 2001 saw the 3.2 come in. Even then, the 2001> Omegas will only pay £215 max, not the £400 rate as cars that were registered before 23rd March 2006 stop at band K.

huh, there is a rotten burgundy 3.0 man elite in the local scrappy on them irmisher wheels, and tbh it still looks fooking hard. imagine a 3.2 ex cop white estate, totally cleaned on 19" amg rims and air-ride....

they are a lush drive and fairley comfortable, only problem with ours was tickover dropped occasionally and had to be adjusted every time it dropped, the car cost us £1000 sold for £450 with no tax or MOT :( tad loss!! but the bloke has it running sound now so he got a bargain!! (no idea if hes fixed tickover problem though!!)

father-in-law-ish currently has an 02 plate 2.6 V6 elite which (touch wood) has had no problems and flew through an MOT not too long ago, the elite cost £1200
