Bright silver looks good depending on the cars paint, as is always the case with wheels.

You'll be fine with your charge cooler. Mark Watts old Turbo ran over 250bhp on the same one! And there's a local MK2 astra GTE running the same setup on phase 2.

18-12-09, 03:55 PM
update. my plans are to use an early j20xe block and crank as its the better 1 of the 2 cranks, and the facted that i had is sitting in my garage for years.so i stripped the block down bare and honed it out as the bores where not to bad on it,i then set to work on cleaning the out side of it as i like to always paint my engines when there apart, so the first 2 coats where in primer and the next 4 coats where in fluorescent yellow, then when that dryed i lacqered it.

it was honed after i painted it,paint in the bores wouldnt do it any harm anyway, only harm it would do if you where measuring your ring gaps before fitting them it could through you of abit when measuring

turbo-boy
18-12-09, 04:21 PM
i then put the crank back into the block and set of measuring my piston ring gaps before fitting the rings to the c20let pistons and fitting them. here is how it looks with the steel head gasket on it crying our for the head to be fitted.

them cylinder head that i got had 4 broken valve guides so i sent it away to hoy enginering to get the 4 valve guides replaced and the get the cylinder head refaced,so after i ground in all the valves and put new valve stems in it and when i was done i painted it silver. After a few hours it was dry and ready to be bolted onto the block. heres more pics of it coming together

i was wanting to get my engine bay painted over xmas but having problems getting a strenghtening kit of chris ashtley,it was the first thing i ordered and now i cant paint the engine bay until i weld the plates on the chassis legs,to be honest im ragin as you all know things dont happen by them selfs you need to put in the hard graft and late nights. Thanks for all your comments people

krobinson
19-12-09, 10:48 AM
Nightmare, did you try Harry Hockley? I was checking through ebay for you but there's none for sale at the moment! RAGE!!

turbo-boy
19-12-09, 11:24 AM
to be honest i dont want to be spending that coin on a kit from h,h, if i new anyone with a kit of the bits that i need i would post them my kit when it arrives. question can i use a chassis engine mount bracket that welded onto the drivers side and use one like that for my f28 box?i have the mount for the box just need one to weld onto my chaasis leg after i weld th strenghing plate on.

krobinson
19-12-09, 12:00 PM
Yeah you can use a drivers side mount on the passanger side. Best to weld the Strengthning plate on first, then weld on the bracket.

im on mates pc here, yea the sole purpose for the car is the replace my old corsa turbo that i had for a weekend runabout and to get me to santa pod 2010 and to make it up the strip and get me home in one peice. i got a ap cluch for it but its for a pot type flywheel cause i matched it with flat type flywheel and the pressure plate sits about 2cm above flywheel. can wait til i get egine mounted in

when i hav it bolted on it sit flush to the turbo so there is not going to be any blow by. the plate that i welded into the elbow sits past the flange by about 18mm on one side and tappers down. i think it was worth a try and at the worst cause i can just put my other stanard elbow back on. thanks for the comments lads

update time. well i have been quite busy the past few weeks. i have stitched welded the bay and fitted my home made strenghting kit.got an f28 box and a ap clutch setup and a pot type flywheel.so i then set to work fitting the engine and gear box yesterday and welded my mount on the chassis leg to take the f28 gear box mount. After that i removed the the engine and box and got to work rubbing down the engine bay before i primered it. pics to follow as my camera is in work

When people say 'it should've stayed as a 1.6' they're refering to keeping the car an original GTE/GSi as they will become more sought after. Like keeping a Sport a Sport etc.

I and my bro have been thinking about the red SR he bought recently, fitting an XE would be great in there as it's such a solid car and the body is so mint, but thinking about it we'd much rather keep that an original SR as they are few and far between in standard guise.

Of course I'd pick the LET to a 1.6 anyday (hence me doing a LET converson of my own) but some people also consider the otherside of things except power ;)

At the end of the day, your car your rules. It's looking real good though, coming together nicely :thumb:
