Does the batt light work on the dash
i dont have my haynes to hand :( but i assume the little blue wire (crap pic) is the charge light wire. if so you need to check youve got a live feed to that when you turn the ignition on
i got 10v across the 2 points
Blue/white wire looks in the wrong place? Check earths
Do you have any better pics? There looks to be another terminal near to the main 12v one, that maybe for the blue/white wire?
IT should be marked D+ IIRC
Pretty sure there were only 2 connectors, i'll get to the meet then have a look, not like i have a stereo or need lights haha
Will be fine untill the batt dies :p

does the blue and white wire not need to be on the terminal next to where the thick charging wire is. in the first pic you can see it under the exhaust stud
Haha good point
So the blue wire next to the thick one? i can see another place now i'll try that, or have i got the thick on in the worng place too?
tried the other terminal and no luck

the thick one looks in the right place and the blue one should be next to it mate the blue one should be on the one with the 8mm nut on it and the one next to it is a 10mm i think
i put it on the one next to it, burning my hand on the exhaust manifold haha and nothing, got 8v then just dropped till it cut out

sure there all the same 1.0 1.2 1.3 1.4 1.6 mate as long as they were the early v-belt ones
Oh true
there were 2 types for the year and the guy at the motorfactors got me that one
might be the wrong one

think the diffrence is just in the amps mate. am sure the way you wired it the first time there should be a small black box thingy like a suppressor where that bue wire was. il go out to the shed and see if i can find an old alternator
Ahh supressor, like the connector i cut of to fit that ring connector? ooopes

You shouldnt really be guessing where to attach wires. Take pic with a phone cam or draw a diagram next time, before you dismantle something. A bit easier than blowing up a battery or melting some wires...... Just a tip.

The black box is your diode, this controls the charge
I'm pretty sure there should be no contact between the diode and the shell of the alternator, an earth to the right part of the diode should give a charge, I assume its a post and not spade connector?
The alternator should be earthed to the engine, via a wire from the top adjustment bolt to the engine
This is probs my trouble, i just thought it was a different connector and cut it to put a ring on
I know Craig you're right, normally i'd do that at work don't know why i didnt friday

just had another look at the pics, you appear to be missing a diode!
The diode bolts into where you have the blue/white wire, then the wire that comes from the diode goes to where you have the thick cable (live?) then the post next to it, the blue/white wire goes onto that
The earth is correct

I wasnt being a captain sensible, but just adding helpfull advice.
Hope you sort it, sounds like the missing link is found now anyways.
How do i get a new diode? Maplin?
I seamed to have had it chargong before it went from 7v to 11v
I had 12v after jumping it but then after turning it off i couldn't start it and my dash lights were dim but i still saw 12v
