View Full Version : The one car on the planet you want over any other.

Probably the discussion that appears most on car forums, but recently Ive thought about the answers people give, and whether they are actually that realistic. Its all very well saying you would definately have such and such a car if you could afford it. But would you?

Take a 700K supercar for instance. We all probably think we'd love to own one, but I was thinking about this the other day and my view changed dramatically. SO you have that sort of money to spend, and then what? You have a shiney Zonda S or a Konexzeggisggsigissegg parked on the drive. First things first, are you going to take it out in the wet, which at this time of year, is all the fecking time. How are you going to feel when you're thinking about the amount of road salt up in the nooks and crannies of your 35k quarter panel? You're never going to be able to drive it properly in the wet either. Fancy a spirited drive on a back road when a well placed pot hole or brick could rip 100 grands worth of carbon fiber off the floorpan?? I wouldn't!

So that means you're only really going to drive it in the summer, and then you'll have to worry about some prat crashing into you, and you're never going to want to park it anywhere, and what if it breaks down on you and you cant get it recovered because it wont go on the back of an AA truck, and when you do get it home, you're not going to be able to get the spanners out and fix it yourself, so your wallet is going to get raped by the italian bastids.

So you're only going to use it properly on track, or maybe on a european mountain road. But even on track, you're not going to push it because one mistake will render your wallet with its pants down again, and then some tiny person in a nightfire red Nova is all over your ass and everyone is laughing at you. (left open for any required innuendo).

SO after thinking about this for a while, I decided if I had 700 grand to spend on a car, I wouldnt buy a supercar. In fact, the thought of spending all that money on a car, no matter how awesome it is, makes me feel a little sick.

SO, now if someone asks me what my dream car is, money no object. My answer will now be an Aerial Atom, and id spend the rest on track time :)

Bubba bang on mate, Wanted that car since it first came out and I was a lil kid. I even went to see it at the Earls Court Motor Show. Sat in it too boy was I happy. +rep mate.

I agree with Lee but people who can buy a 700k car have way more then a 1m in the bank and it's just a small slice of their savings. They'd be easily able to afford any issues that happen.

I'd probably want a VXR8 Bathhurst and a Lotus Carlton with my LET Nova and another non Vaux car luxury car, but it would be a difficult choice.

Baby blue Bentley Continental with the cream leather interior. Thats what id mostly be wanting today....

Tomorrow i think id like an off white Range Rover Sport being as its Monday an all....

Tuesday. Hmmmmm, a completely standard Corsa GSi to hoon around in. Then use the Range to pull it out the telegraph pole ill stack it into.......

Wednesday..... a nice Corsa C SRi to drop a grand piano on, then put it on Corsa sport "look what i done today, sacrilidge!"

Thursday.....911 Turbo day...

Friday...wake up & stop dreaming, get in my van an go to work.....

Cos you wouldnt really want to leave the Lotus anywhere for fear of it being vandalised by jealous mofo's whereas not many people would notice a cavalier parked in the street, well not in a bad way as lots of people look at mine but ive not had her scratched or damaged (touches wooden coffee table in front of him) lol

Thing is, thats what ive always thought, but have a really hard think about what it would be like to actually own it. Just because you have loads of money, doesnt mean your going to be happy to blast your zonda down a back road and risk ruining it! Really try to imagine its on your drive right now.

A multi millionaire bloke we contract to only has a 59 reg M3, a Civic 5 door (new shape one) an a top of the range Merc Sprinter. But he the same, just because he can afford super cars, he just doesnt want them.

But how could you use a veyron in day to day situations? Comfort? You could get that from 100k's worth of Merc. It doesnt need to go 245mph and cost 800 grand, and use eleventy gallons of fuel just to go to the shops. :)

as an everyday car, if i was only allowed the one........probably something like a subaru forester, or a new Discovery/rangerover sport..

because most dream cars are hugely impractical in some respect,

a proper mini with 120hp would be hilarious to drive, but bouncy & noisy..
an rs cosworth (any of them) would be such a target for thieves & vandals
an F1GTR would be awesome but you would lose your licence within seconds.
a turbo nutter 4wd nova would stop it being a nova, in my view.
all supercars are like works of art, nice to look at, but at risk at all times.

my old moggie minor pickup was a great vehicle to drive, and everyone loved it. it couldn't go over 70mph, but it handled like a large go kart, and made funny exhaust farting noises when you changed down a gear... but it was rotten as a pear & only had 2 cramped seats...

Ps. Burgo. the prototype xj220 which was launched at the motorshow was a truly beautiful creature. the production one looks a lot like it but was a huge thing with a twin turbo 6r4 engine, the very limited edition xjr15 was more like the original one, and TWR made both.....coincidence?????

I'm sure there are fancier cars out there which I can't think of at this moment, but I can get a baby seat in the back of the M3, drive in relative comfort across country on either the motorways or A/B roads, get the weekly shopping in the boot and then when I fancy it, take it on track for a good thrashing.

Much as I don't fancy admitting wanting in on the "fast and furious" scene

Pretty awesome cars and massive potential to harass 700k worth of car, seen one parked up in reading before and had to have a look round it even though I tried to walk past so I didn't look like I was trying to rob it, after getting out of my nova next to it in a hoodie lol

However with millions and millions around I could see myself actually driving a large chunk of my money around, it's what I did in the nova being a skint student, just a far smaller scale money wise lol Cars and my bank balance will always have a near linear inverse relationship lol

Race car on the roads :) Have seen one drive by and the noise it made under a bridge was immense, and the fact it's a short 40 limit road, means he probably didn't even have his foot down :d

However for looking less like a nob, something aston martin maybe, and there would definitely be a muscle car in the garage, probably next to the mk1 manta... RB26 in that would probably be useful for swapping parts over, buying in doubles etc :d

To be fair if there was room I'd probably have a nova kicking around as well... haven't driven mine in about a month and miss it already, something addictive about the simplicity and the way they drive

Was thinking the way you sit, the feel of being in a coffin, the clutch thats so heavey its like your pushing a jumbo jet along, the gear change thats like its made of and surround by mecano(sp)

its the best looking car ever built, best sounding car ever built, at its time was one of the quickest cars ever built, can still mix it up with the big boys today. I love cars having the stripped out look, hence mine, it can be a poser car or an animal, best of both worlds.

I rather like the way my buckets used to 'hug' me in the car, and loved being in scotts surrounded by cage, clutch not so good, no one likes a heavy clutch lol Is it wrong I read that last bit as "satisfyingly raw gear linkage"? lol

edit: think paul is on the same wavelength, stripped out in cars is the best way. As someone once said to me: "you only like something if it's stripped and caged don't you" lol

If i could only have 1 car it would be a nova with a shell made out of carbon fibre and a spacefame and some stupid HP LET.

If not id have a mk2 escort, nova, sierra saph cosworth,XR2 Fiesta.

Anyone can go out and buy a supercar aslong as theyve made the money to pay for it.

But to build something yourself that can beat supercars, thats much better.

Joined just to post on this.
I'd have to have a Lamborghini LM002 but tweek the V12 for more power and put some more road orientated wheels and tyres on it.
Track car would be a VX220 turbo...or a Lancia Stratos

Someone needs to paint a Nova up like that Rally spec Integrale.
Jeebus if I saw someone do that I would personally go up to them and slap them in the face.

But how could you use a veyron in day to day situations? Comfort? You could get that from 100k's worth of Merc. It doesnt need to go 245mph and cost 800 grand, and use eleventy gallons of fuel just to go to the shops. :)

Trust me I could easily. Its a hypercar, I'd be in it every chance I got. It wouldn't worry me that it wasn't practical. We spend our whole lives saddled with practicalities. A hypercar is a way to escape all that is mundane boring and grey. It captures the very essence of what it is to be a petrolhead. Even stuck in a traffic jam in it you'd be living a dream
