Been offered a 40k xe engine, no box, with loom and ecu, £350

No proof of millage, but the lads a good lad!

He builds rally cars and throws wiered stuff in mk2 esocrts, thats what this was for!

So, do I go and get it at the weekend? lol

What should I look out for?

Im viewing it on monday night:thumb:

I wouldn't jump at the chance to buy it because its claimed to only have covered 40k.

I would still end up stripping the engine down to replace and inspect everything over anyways if it were me.

Tom

edit : Well worth a look if your in the market of an XE, just don't bite his arm off for it !.

they are cheaper elsewhere and if your going to rebuild it anyway then it doesnt really matter about miles. I have a fully rebuilt low mileaged engine ARP'd but im after £500

That's a high price with no proof of mileage and without a box. my advice is to buy cheap and spend what you have saved rebuilding it.

PS. Rick, you seem to have lots of stuff for sale. get a big for sale thread started lol

WAY too dear IMO.

I'd be expecting to get a whole Calibra for that ! lol lol lol

high mileage xe's are still good so dont waste your money.

Aye, with no proof he may as well have just picked a figure out his ar$e. I'm assuming its out and ready for collection so you can't see it running?

XE with no ancilliaries is worth £150 tops, especially for one with unproven mileage. £350 is an absolute joke.

lol a 40k XE??!! What car did it come out of? Comes with no box so need one, i'd offer him £200 and be done with it.

Its a gen 40k, he has no reason to lie, he told me this before I even showed an interest!

On all the autograa sites £350 is the going rate, and isnt there one on here thats been sat outside for 2 years for that?

Personally I think its worth it, as that seems to be the going rate, He has a costcast one there aswell, so I may have the pair off him, im unsure atm!

if its coscast head and looks clean - i think you can't go wrong -he'll get £350 for it easy from someone, so you'll only miss out , if you want it.

MattBrown

Im going for the 40k one I think, as I can just give it him back and get a full re-fund!

Anything to lookout for while im looking over it?

..if it has coscast stamp, if its never been apart and is undercompression - try turn it by hand... also take the gearbox off, if its not already.
Thats about as much as you can check without dissasembling it all..

Pistol Pete

Bit hard to fully inspect as its not running. And if, as you say he is sound and has no reason to lie, whats to look over? Just check its complete. Thats all you can do really.

Seems expensive so offer him £250 and see what happens. In all fairness though I think unless it's a coscast it's not worth the full asking price, for that I'd expect a gearbox as well. By the sounds of it though you seem keen so I don't think this thread will matter and you'll buy it anyway.

40k?? lol

thats a new one on me! Usually they are 72k or 87k at the most! lol

I would eat my shoe if that was genuine. Good job you cant prove me wrong really! ;)

40k seems like a nice rounded made up ish number.

When i got my first one it had apparently had done just under 60k, and the bores/condition of the internals showed this so you never know you might just get lucky. 350 without bits is pushing it though.

has it got starter/alternator/coil etc is it a single v belt setup? if it is id pay 300 tops! if not no more than 250, especially if its not got a gearbox as your looking at 50quid for an f20 at the moment

MattBrown
11-12-09, 06:41 PM
Yeah, I see what your all saying, its been in one of his units for years, in his engine building room, he bought it to do an all steel bottom ended rally spec lump, but then fooked it off for ****el power!

I can get an f20 for £30, also He thinks he has one I can have

The only think ill need is hoses, as the mk2 boys run a totally differant set-up to us lot!

Ill just get some roose motorsport ones:)

Also, alternator, starter and loom are there, and yeah, if he says 40k, then its done 40k lol

If I take it apart, will, will you eat your shoes if it looks like a 40k motor?

Pistol Pete

Looks means fook all.

At 40k though, it ought to be pretty clean under the rocker cover. Cross hatching should be very evident on the bores. Minimal scoring on the cam lobes too. If it has been sat that long, it will want taking apart oiling up/checking & putting back together IMO.

Adam
11-12-09, 07:49 PM
And dont forget you can **** an engine in about 2mile...... So mileage isnt a huge issue IMO. Id still be pulling it apart to rebuild most of it :)
It might of done 40k without an oil change etc etc..........

Up to you though, theres still plenty of xe's about.

Are you taking the piss? £350???????????????????

My last one cost £150, i knew the mile and the cars history and the owner. Engine was the best xe i've owned (5) and best one i've seen/heard running.

Who gives a funk if it has "40k", if its been ragged and no had the oil changed and such then its a shi*ter. One with a 150k engine that's been looked after will be much better.

Went to see it last night, was 3 redtops on the floor of a unit, no starters, alts, wires, pumps, anything, bare engines!

I swiftly left laughing to myself!

The lad owns the white gte on astra gsi rims that has just sold on here!
